@mrbojangles25: Don't worry about becoming some professional at the game right away. Just have fun and play at your own pace and you'll learn. Play all of the characters and never stick to one class or character. Play brawl mode a lot (everyone gets a random character every time they die). Just have fun man and you'll become better with time as will the people you're getting matched with.

Also if anyone wants to add me and play HotS or Overwatch...

Lololol, and I felt like I'm such a TF2 player. I keep playing the demo and soldier copycats in this game. I found out how to play the soldier girl and her ultimate is killer on capture points. Excuse my ignorance on characters name theres far too many for me to remember. I notice every match has that arrow guy and good teamwork teams have a medic just like Tf2 lol.

I'm enjoying it for what it is. I may get it. It certainly feels like a $30-40 (seems like it is on bnet) game like tf2 was, not worth $60 for origins copy.

Is there any point in leveling up apart from getting more currency to unlock skins etc? Like is there a point in regards to gameplay?

Abso-freakin-lutely. You won't being playing with idiots every game. With higher levels comes more experience. Higher level players will know how to pick characters for what map their playing and what characters they're playing against. There is a MASSIVE difference between low and high level players. This coming from someone who played closed beta to level 50ish and then played with noobs when levels got wiped for the open beta.

I don't have any technical problems with the game and it is fun for a while but there's not enough there to get me to spend much more time with it. While I like the character designs about half of the characters are overpowered and the other half are worthless. The maps look different but all play the same and are too small for my tastes. If it was free or maybe $20 I'd buy it but not for $60 or even $30. I've gotten burned out on multiplayer fps in general and there's not enough different in Overwatch to keep me playing.

I'll be buying it at launch. I really love TF2, its my favourite game. But the community after TF2 turned F2P really pissed me off. Too many new players, people only going on Valve servers and trade servers and its competitive mode isn't out yet. Overwatch gives me that competitive edge I missed in TF2. Oh sure I can play the new mode coming to TF2 but will the community actually take it seriously? I also never saw TF2 as a 6v6 game(9v9 makes the most sense because ya know, it has 9 classes). Soooo Overwatch is just a new game like TF2 for me to hop onto and relive the days of when I had to learn the game and other players weren't just there to trade hats.

I think that is what appeals to me, it is an opportunity to learn again, something fresh.

And it sounds like it encourages people to play different characters which is nice, keep you on your toes.

That's a little disappointing, but I suppose there is precedent; I'd generally fill the void for what was lacking in TF2, to an extent.

That is one of the big reasons I threw in the towel. Coming from 2k+ hours in TF2, being forced to change to another character in order to adapt to the other team is annoying. I mean sure if we didn't have a medic or heavy I would switch over the fill the roles most of the time, but at least I could change up my loadout with dozens of items per character in order to adapt on the fly while still playing the character I wanted. The point is each character has a lot of options in terms of play-style in TF2, in Overwatch you are forced to switch to a different character, frequently one you don't want to play in order to avoid getting destroyed (there is ZERO ability/item customization, even as simplified as HotS is you still have choices for character builds). That is not engaging or enjoyable gameplay. It's straight up irritating.

But a high level player doesn't necessarily mean he's a better player, just that he has played more hours.

I was just asking if anything changed like COD where you unlock new weapons etc.

I'll be honest I was extremely skeptical of the game before I tried it.. Blizzard had never done anything close to a FPS up until this point, and from what I have seen thus far it's one of the best multiplayer FPS's I have played in a very long time.. Each character feels extremely unique with their own varied gameplay.. The game looks absolutely beautiful at max settings, and runs extremely smooth..

I played very little but right from the get go I didnt really like the game. It seems well put together enough but it seems to be a little tooooo much like TF2. I dont get why they decided to include and use stuff like Payload and some of the characters are so...generic. Definitely not buying it any time soon. I wouldnt say its "garbage" but it isnt worth my money or time right now. So many brilliant minds at Blizzard and billions in the bank and all they can come up with is a TF2 clone? Nah...somethings wrong here.

I wouldn't say it's that much like TF2. There are 21 characters and the characters have skill sets. TF2 has nothing like that. It's far more diverse than TF2 and much more strategy and planning is required. And the same thing could be said for Valve. So many brilliant minds and billions of dollars but all they do is buy out fan made mods like Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead, Counter Strike, Portal, and DotA instead of making anything original by themselves.

Go cry some moor

Seriously, you sound so whiny in this thread. Valve is way more original than Blizzard lol

I had a ton of fun with this game and after playing a lot for the first day of the open beta, I decided to pre-order. Characters are surprisingly well balanced considering blizzard always had a tough time balancing classes in WoW (and D3). I get 120fps with my GTX 690 on medium settings, And the game still looks pretty good. But I don't care too much about looks when it comes to playing competitive fps games - performance is far more important and the engine has run flawlessly and smooth for me. I haven't been this addicted to an online fps since the early days of TF2, and Quake 3 before that.

Haven't been this hooked on an FPS since Quake 2.

Got to level 66 during beta (early access & open).

Hardly any sleep that week either :P

Taking off work for release week.

I'll defend two of my main complaints. 1 - the game looks and runs like shit, primarily because of the dynamic render. It cannot be disabled, only adjusted to be less shitty. And when you do it takes a massive hit to FPS. I'm running above the recommended specs and just to get the visuals to the point of no muddy textures, loads of jaggies, and terrible view distance (ie it still looks worse than TF2 on these settings) I have to eat a frame-rate drop in heavy action. Also, to get it to look not shitty you need to bump up the textures, texture filtering, AA, and view distance to absurd levels. tldr - the game looks and runs like shit, primary culprit being the cancer that is dynamic rendering.

i don't know what kind of toaster you are running, but i have personally not seen as smooth engine performance in shooters in a long time than in Overwatch. one of the best aspects of the game imo. and even artistically the game looks better than anything i've played for a while, because of the bright, wide dynamic color range and superb animations. i'm starting to feel there's something terribly wrong with you, or you have some weird personal issue against this game.

@groowagon:

I'm running higher than the recommended specs at 1920x1200 on medium-high. I get framerate drops in heavy action (especially while scoped in as WM). When I take the dynamic resolution over 75% (which looks HORRENDOUS) to 100% (still muddy textures) my framerate gets cut in half. That shouldn't be happening in a well optimized game, further, there is no need for the dynamic res to begin with. All it does is add one unnecessary variable that they have to code the drivers and optimization around. If they want to do dynamic res on consoles, fine, but allow me to completely disable it on the PC so it isn't tanking my framerates.

that's not dynamic resolution, that is resolution scaling. it means that in 100% it renders at the resolution you have set, and when you lower it, the actual render becomes smaller in resolution, but the menus and HUDs are still rendered in the original resolution you have set. resolution scaling is practically disabled when you set it to 100%.

that was invented to for optimization on lower end system, so you actually benefit from it with the toaster PC you are using, not suffering from it. if you think it's bloating the graphics, it proves you have no clue on how rendering works.

resolution doesn't affect textures. texture resolution is a separate thing from rendering resolution.

I run Overwatch on a GTX 750 TI on low to medium settings and pull a near constant 70+ fps no matter what's going on in game.

Overwatch overall is pretty fun. I watched some videos on its net code and I can see both sides of leaving it as is to give players that don't have the best connection a chance or changing it to be more exact between client and server so that people aren't shot even when they end up safely behind cover. I'm leaning towards the game being accessible to players on many different qualities of connection as long as the difference isn't super ridiculous that is.

Positives:

  • 20+ Heroes to choose from.
  • Many heroes have unique ultimate abilities along with unique weapons and unique skills
  • Stages have a lot of room to move around in most areas.
  • The game modes where you have to capture a point or points to win are pretty fun.

Negatives:

  • I don't really like the escort the payload game mode. I just feel that the game modes where you either attack or defend a point are much more inviting as a whole.
  • I don't like that there's no limit to duplicate hero picks. Playing against a team of 6 Soldiers 76s or 6 McCrees ruins the immersion of encountering many different skill sets. Yes, it's easy to counter a team of duplicated heroes but it feels kind of weird and unnatural to play against a team of 6 Tracers or 6 Meis. I feel the limit should be 2 or 3 of each hero maximum per team.
  • Lack of game modes. Yes, the game hasn't released yet so this may change. I just feel the payload game mode might be better off as something else.

Overall, I really like what the game offers at the moment. I'm not trying to judge it too much except I just don't really like playing payload period. This may change over time though. I bought the game the night before the beta ended so I'm in it for the long haul.

By the way... If the game runs bad for you, you need to put your settings lower. You should ideally aim for a constant 60+ fps no matter how low you need to set your in game settings to do this.

A few frustrating matches once you play the higher ranked players but I have to say.......I really enjoyed it!!! :D

This is a return to form for Blizzard, who were just coasting along with the same tired IPs. Too many old men with glasses of red in their hands calling the shots before.

They've taken the TF2 formula and spun it into their own creation.

I love how accessible the game is, almost pick up and play for some characters, and the amount of polish into every aspect of it. Its going to be a lot of fun working out the most effective ways to use those different powers and combining them. When you use them together, this game becomes its own thing.

The ice girl and the Widowmaker were my favourites.

It was an awesome beta. I think most enjoyed it since they extended it for an extra day.

PS: People are having trouble running this?! The Doom beta was unplayable for me but this ran beautifully on the ol' girl. All the settings were customisable.

Just ask @with_teeth26 - my computer is like one of those old ride-on lawnmowers!
