If it was sold at one point, chances are that the game isn't free. There are many abandonware sites out there that allow you to download games they think nobody cares about anymore. But as far as I know, downloading from those sites isn't technically legal. Your best bet would be to hit Ebay or Gog.com for your classic game needs. Pretty much every game for sale on gog.com is well worth the price you'll pay.
If you don't mind messing around with DosBox, you can play some great old PC games like Elder Scrolls 1 & 2 and Alone in the Dark. Abandonia is the site to visit for them. I mentioned this in another thread but GTA 2 is still fun.
