I built a computer about two years ago and it died a couple months ago. I took it to a diagnostic place that said it was either or both the cpu and the motherboard. If i replace those(and I'd have to get new ram cause i cant find a motherboard that accepts my old stuff) but keep my video card and hard drive, will the computer boot like the old one with the same OS and files?

No, most of the time, the PC won't boot if it was installed on another harwdare configuration.

No, it probably won't, but sometimes it does. I replaced my motherboard and CPU, yet I was able to keep my old XP installation. Of course, I had to reactivate, but I'm not complaining.

EDIT: If you upgrade your motherboard, you'll probably need to get a new graphics, as you probably have an AGP card. Either way, do the upgrades yourself so you don't get ripped-off by the computer shop.

if your computer is two years old, i doubt that you can put in your old videocard, processor etc in your new motherboard. what socket and VGA slots does your motherboard have?
