i have purchased Guild Wars Factions and Counter Strike Source about a month or 2 ago. Counter strike just wouldn't work at all. and when it did, lag was terrible. With guild wars, it works decent, at time it lags, and the loading from place to place takes a while, but in randomly has moments where it lags, then stops. The computer im using is a HP Pavilion 743. it ha 512MB of ram, Pentium 4 processor, windows xp, and i believe its a 120 gb hard drive. its about 8 years old, and everything is stock on it (family comp). Im going to build my own when school starts, but i just play game to pas the summer bye. any suggestions on how to make the games run faster. Ive talked to my parents about upgrading the ram and hard drive, but they are total noobs. I change all the settings to low, and those 2 games still run slow. I would say your CPU and Ram are ok at least not sure about the card though but if all your current games a running fine on it then I would leave it until crysis comes out and use that time to save up for a top of the range card if you want it on max settings that is.

I need to upgrade the Video Card so its pointless to put it out there. IF I upgrade my ram to 1GB will that have a signifigant affect on my performance.

What sort of video card would you suggest for my desktop, its over 4 years old now and I'm looking at something around 250.

My Laptop has-

AMD Athlon 2800 2.08GHZ

2GB Ram

2x100GB HD.

The computer is only about 3 months old so I'm guessing that the Video card can handle the game.

Your laptop definitely won't be able to handle supcom because of its CPU. Dual core CPU's are basically the minimum for this game. For your desktop you would need to do a complete overhaul. Meaning a new motherboard capable of using a core 2 duo(Doesn't really matter which version as any core 2 duo is sufficient) at least 1gb of RAM(Although 2gb is recommended) And if you have the money go with an 8800 GTS. If not you could go with the 7900GS or even the 7600GT.

Have you played Supcom? A core 2 duo isn't a requirement but a dual core basically is. If you don't have at least some sort of dual core CPU (Mainly AMD X2 or core 3 duo) then you're not going to get very good performance if you attempt to play with a lot of players or on a relatively large map.

my graphic card is an intel 945gm express chipset...it saysUP TO128mb but on my display properties it says total available is 224mb...but then states my video system memory is only 32mb...wtf?!

could anyone be kind enough to explain what it is going on about..im a noob and in need of some help.

i do the system requirement lab scan for warcraft...everything passes with flying colours..but it says my graphic card is only 32mb when i mentioned above it says 224mb..is there a way to change the 32 up to 224?

or does the card "automatically incrase the size capacity when a more demanding application is being used i.e. a game? that is just a guess..so please dont laugh too hard if im mistaken

please help :( and thanks in advance guys

Procesor is good enough for max. President of Crytek also sad that E6600 can max out crysis. And RAM is also enough.

You have an integrated GPU, which takes the RAM of your your PC and makes it is own. I'm guessing that although your integrated GPU can take up to 224mb of RAM off of your standard RAM your bios settings is set at it only taking 32mb of RAM. Go check your bios to see what video RAM your GPU is allowed to take. That should fix your problem.

i have a selection of either 64mb and 128mb on the bios...that tidies a lot up for me, but im still a bit miffed where the 224mb comes from. it states that is the total amount of graphic memory available.

does that mean i can get up to 224mb? even tho the bios only lets me select up to 128

Upgrading laptops is typically limited to CPU, Hdd, and RAM, not video cards in some huge 90 % plus of situations. Laptops simply have no video card as such, or when they have a real one, that's a small percentage of what is sold, and there is still no option to change it. A small minority of those that sold for higher prices in the first place can be upgraded, but not by the owner. And $250 probably wouldn't cover the cost. It has to go back to the factory.

I updated the original post with some system requirements for more popular games, and I'll keep updating it as new info comes to light. I'm rather surprised there are no BioShock requirements yet.

If you guys find out system requirements for games like BioShock, Quake Wars, etc., feel free to post them here.

It's misleading and confusing to use clock speed as a basis to determine whether a given CPU is enough to run a game or not.

Case in point: Supreme Commander. A 3GHz processor? What kind of 3GHz processor? Because a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo E6300 runs in circles around a 3.4GHz P4, and that's in single threaded apps. In multithreaded apps (like SupCom) it's orders of magnitude faster.

I suggest you ditch that kind of nomenclature and cite the minimum processor from each given architecture instead. For example:

Recommended CPU:

P4@3.0GHz or better

Core 2 Duo E6300 or better

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ or better

And so on.

Otherwise people will get confused and will start thinking their fast, cooler, and more efficient Core 2 Duo and AMD64 X2 are not enough to play new games, and think they'll need to buy a piece of junk P4 at 4GHz to play games.

Ok I have a problem here, for Lost Planet, I downloaded the demo, and my computer is either on par or very close to the recommended requirements and well above the minimum, but the game bareley runs(20-25fps max) at minimum settings and it annoys me very much.

Here is my computer specs:AMD ATHLON X2 4600+ @ 2.4 ghz(Dual Core), 2 gb RAM, and laughably 2 7600 GS's @ 256 mb a piece in SLI. Also, the HDD is 160 gigs, I have a 680 V power supply.

Also, this makes me worry for Crysis as I am well above the minimum and meet the recommended except for the graphics(but not far off, they are still way above the 6600 which is the minimum), so do you guys think I will be able to run it.

And I also noticed that with all my games when it reads my video card(s), it displays NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS and never says x2 or or 2 7600 GS and yes I do have SLI enabled from the NVIDIA control panel and turned on and off the multi GPU setting in Lost Planet. I really need a solution.

I think you should check your bios.I don't know your motherboard brand so i can't tell how to increase but it is usually in Advanced

chipset feature.Why bothering with onboard graphic to play games,try MSI Geforce 8500GT.It is just around 100$ and it has

a support for DirectX10.I am sure this card will please you.

I am 90% sure thant gaphic card for laptops are cannot be upgraded.If they can you have send it to the manufacture and it will cost nearly a new laptops.So buying a new laptop with good graphic card is better option.

I can give a confirmation based on the Quake Wars beta that everyone with the following hardware will undoubtably be able to play Quake Wars. This is only a beta and things can only get better. But if you don't have atleast a 6600GT you may want to upgrade anyway.

You are at the half way point for RAM. You really need more badly. That's your worst problem. The video card is relatively behind the times, but not so much as the RAM. Less of a problem is the comparative slowness of the processor -- system requirements haven't exactly run away from the old P4s, but its useful lifetime for games is almost over.

i have a question that i need help to just bought myself doom and serious sam for the pc heres my question for you guys.I have vista it came on the computer and stuff not my choice on that one does anyone know if there is a patch or something for these games and the doom game is the ultimate doom for windows 95

And I also noticed that with all my games when it reads my video card(s), it displays NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS and never says x2 or or 2 7600 GS and yes I do have SLI enabled from the NVIDIA control panel and turned on and off the multi GPU setting in Lost Planet. I really need a solution.

I wander which window you are using and if it is window Vista use forceware158.**(sorry i forgot).Try to clean out your PC.If XP try system mechanic to clean out your pc.I suggest to have two windows.One to play games and one to do something else.Only than your Pc will max out it's performance.And make sure to connect two graphic cards with small daughter card.If you can try to replace your graphic cards.If you can get refund,replace them with 8800GTS or 2900XT will be a good option to play DX10 games like Crysis or Lost Planet with better graphic.You are welcome mate.

That is not a "card" at all. It is a rather inefficient onboard graphics chip built into the chipset. No one anywhere designs any games intentionally for IGPs like yours. But you should have an empty PCI-e (16) add-in slot, so you can buy at least a lower mid-level, actual video card such as a 7600 GS that doesn't draw much current, and probably would run, even on the small PSU your PC has.

I got supreme commander recently and got all sysetm req except 3ghz cpu got 2.6 and the game runs as slow as a slideshow. It runs good on low settings at start of matches but wen things buildup it goes all choppy, wat would I need to do to make run beta?

I need to upgrade the Video Card so its pointless to put it out there. IF I upgrade my ram to 1GB will that have a signifigant affect on my performance.

What sort of video card would you suggest for my desktop, its over 4 years old now and I'm looking at something around 250.

My Laptop has-

AMD Athlon 2800 2.08GHZ

2GB Ram

2x100GB HD.

The computer is only about 3 months old so I'm guessing that the Video card can handle the game.

not necessarily. a computer's ram, HD, and processor could all be top notch, but the one place that computer manufactuers skip out on when building computers is the video card. you could have a great one, or you could have a very low-end integrated graphics card. only you would know from the price and quality of the laptop. :P edit: sorry. i forgot to answer about SupCom. your laptop's RAM would be ok, as would it's HD. but i doubt the processor would hold up very well, and as i said before, we would need to know the video card to help you in that department

Am I able to run games like Supcom? The settings will be low of course, but I'm not intending on playing something that looks like AOE II either , so err, any RTSs?

The X600 was a retread when it was "new". ATI had introduced the 9600s late in the Radeon 9500-9800 generation, and had named them oddly, since they are slower, other than the XT, than the 9500s. The X300, X550, and X600 were modified by including PCI-e in new versions of the same silicon, from various speed versions of the 9600s. In other words, from slow old silicon.

Games with both a minimum and a recommended level, when the recommended is so much higher performance than the minimum, are practically telling lies with the minimums they suggest. You wouldn't be happy with the animation speed you would get. The small amount of RAM would also be a problem. Since I personally do not like crowds much at all, I never test MMOs, nor would I play an online RTS with more than just thosehere across my own LAN, so this is hearsay next, but supposedly the mob scenes with numerous players are quite demanding on processors, so you'd want to play with small groups.

FPS games are more problematic about frame rates than other games, and become unplayable rapidly when video performance is poor, but there are plenty of older, slower RTSes out there. The AoE games, apparently, aren't so very demanding on systems at all compared to Oblivion, for instance.

is it really neccessary to upgrade to Core 2 Duo and to PCI Express Motherboard to enjoy these great upcoming PC games? my desktop pc's kinda old. its still AGP, Pentium 4 3.2 GHz, 1 Gig RAM, ASUS A9550 GE video card.lordlors

Trying to get any more stretch from AGP is asking a lot. PCIe is no longer new. It's been almost three years since it took over, and games systems simply don't last so very long and still keep up without major upgrades. The C2D is still way out in front of the performance race, but there are plenty of more reasonably priced AMD processors to choose from, and only a couple of lower priced C2Ds so far. Your system suffers from video cheapness, though.

Well, given Asus's propensity to use names than mean absolutely nothing compared to what ATI's own names are, I could have overstated that. The Radeon 9550 is junk. It was junk when it was a Radeon 9600 SE, and still junk when it became the X300 PCI-e. Converting it back to AGP from PCI-e didn't change it from being bad junk. If Asus didn't follow the naming of ATI, you'll have to determine what you bought.

As always, when anyone is considering a high performance upgrade, he/ she needs to take into account the demand that such video cards place on the power supply. A brand named PC is not usually sold with much more than the minimum needed for whatever internal components it is sold with (slightly less true for most Dell models, but the principle is the same). All of the 8800 cards want more 12 Volt current than a readymade PC can normally provide, and many such PCs are seriously (well, marvelous! The particular word I want is slipping out of memory -- OK, got it!) "Proprietary".

That means you often cannot just go down to the Comps-R-Us store, grab a 500 watt PSU and take it home to stick it in. You have to get one that is advertised as being intended for your particular system.

The video upgrade has to include the PSU as well as the GPU. (Almost) Finally, yes, the 8800 GT is very good.

Actually, in closing, here is the real "finally", I didn't add the "_1" at the end of the handle used here, that was the result of all the forums from various inter-related domains being combined, and some computer fiter did that. When I'm unable to use the plain Kiwi name that goes with being born in New Zealand, I will opt for "The Kiwi", because I am the oldest NZ born (I think) messager on the gaming boards.
