I think pc games are dying, not from a lack of sales, but a lack of imagination. there has not been a new great ip fps game made since battlefield, crysis, metro 2003 and bioshock. nor has there been a new great ip rpg since dao, witcher, elder scrolls, and fallout. i can't even name a great new adventure ip, or mmo or strategy the only areas that seems to be making some progress is horror with titles like soma, and puzzle games like limbo by indie devs.

we do have a lot of sequels, most of which are good but gamers already know what to expect from them. i think the problem lies not in graphics or mechanics but in storytelling, which is weird considering the state of the world today, how about an fps about a child soldier in war torn country, an rpg/strategy about society thats falling apart morally, politically, an adventure game about a rescuing a group of people held trapped in the aftermath of a natural disaster etc.

as for the music in games, quality seems to have gone downhill, from great days of themes for crysis, fallout, dao to mention a few. indie devs are trying to produce good original ips for pc games, but the major publishers and devs seem to have run out of fresh ideas.

what says the community?

I totally disagree. I think for originality, you have to look at indie titles where there seems to be tons of great stuff being done (and doing very similar things with gameplay and story per your examples). The gaming industry is now mature, so like Hollywood, you have the established, deep-pocketed mainstream publishers churning out sequels and comfort-food gaming (bc that's what sells), and more creative things being done around the edges. You're not going to see much risk taken with AAA titles. Just too much $$$ at stake.

what does that have to do with PC gaming? it's not like there have been brilliant shooters on consoles either recently. it's a crossplatform issue, so why the topic title?

well Witcher 3 is hands down the best in the series, i mean totally in a different league than the first two, so i think it was about time even an old IP was finally used properly, don't you think? there's also Cyberpunk 2077 just around the corner. there's also Star Citizen just around the corner (the corner size may vary with this one). there's also Deliverance just around the corner, there's also... well what the hell, just read this topic for starters.

my PS4 is collecting dust at the moment. i only got it for Bloodborne, so i'm a happy PC camper at the moment.

OP is the epitome of pc wannabe gamer who only know about consolized mainstream games

Lack of rpg? shadowrun, wasteland, divinity, pillars, torment, banner saga, all released lately

Strategy? Xcom, homeworld, stellaris, act of aggression, satellite reign, darkest dungeon, hard west, cities skylines, etc also current titles

Its a good thing that these kind of pc wannabe gamers think pc gaming is dying, let them go away to their console heaven

Need some more graphs - compared to growth of world population, increase in overall gaming over the years and graphs showing console users over the years.

I do agree with urbangamez that major companies tend to copy - paste that's my main complain for months now, I also agree with attirex that indie games are the most unique ones on the market - so if you're looking for originality rather than quality (sometimes both equally) look for indie section on Steam for example.

That looks a bit like Al Gore's graph from his long terrible video. :P

Have you even scrolled down a single page on Steam in 3 years? There are HUNDREDS of fantastic games coming out that fit what you say "haven't been good since 2013"

just some general thoughts based on the responses so far.

as i said in the post i don't think pc gaming is dying based on sales, however the quality of pc games are dying certainly in the AAA segment of the market. pc gamers still buy a lot of games but most are bored, as evidence, very few pc gamers are hyped by some of the new releases, statistically using steam a small number are finishing games, even less are completing games (all achivements) over time, and very few indie games again using steam, achive the status of say ethan carter, or gone home.

reason for these statistics, i say this is because pc games led by the AAA have in the main has gotten boring there is little reason to care about the characters or their circumstance, the music doesn't insipire. even when no sequel there is copy, example use to be every new fps copy cod, now they copy titanfall.

on the positive side some of the games on the lists given have great reviews and games i did not know about, and it goes without saying not all AAA pc games, or sequels are boring, and all indie pc games are good.

Most of the games you listed, I don't find very fun nor did I think they were very good. Of course, my opinion will vary from others.

"There has not been a new great ip fps game made since battlefield, crysis, metro 2003 and bioshock. nor has there been a new great ip rpg since dao, witcher, elder scrolls, and fallout."

  • Battlefield - never really good to begin with. I though Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2 were decent games, but since CoD2 the series has been downhill and lackluster
  • Crysis - nice open sandbox-type world. The next entry removed the sandbox feel and simplified the game to cater more towards consoles. The series lost it's pzazz.
  • Metro - were decent shooter games. They remind me a lot of the STALKER games since some team from the STALKER series did work on the game. I preferred the STALKER games over Metro, but I thought Metro was decent enough.
  • Bioshock - eh....the first game was great up until the big letdown of the story right towards the end. I've got Bioshock 2 still in it's wrapper and I haven't bothered with Infinite.
  • DA:O - this was a good game. I enjoyed the controls, the story and the RPG elements. I puked in my mouth a little when I tried DA2 and I won't touch Inquisition. This series was ground up, spat out and then shit on, if you ask me.
  • Witcher - first game, some of the most boring and easy combat. I only played through for the story. I put a few hours into the second game, but I just couldn't get into it. The intro when you're running from the dragon and you have to hit the keys at the right time to dodge - I don't like these things in games. If I wanted to play time the button pressing just right, I'd play me some Parappa the Rapper.
  • Elder Scrolls - Morrowind was amazing. Oblivion was a garbage dump and Skyrim was an improvement, so the dump now looks like a messy trash can knocked on the floor. Skyrim has shown to be more entertaining over Oblivion.
  • Fallout - 1 & 2 were great. 3 is a bastardized version of the original Fallout game - it lacked the wit and strategy, was buggy and a slap in the face to the original games. As a FPS, it was fairly decent. New Vegas was an improvement over 3, but neither were good enough to get me to spend money on Fallout 4

"i can't even name a great new adventure ip, or mmo or strategy"

Adventure games - have you not heard of Telltale? They make great adventure games. Walking Dead, Back to the Future (this one is a little old, but still awesome).

MMO - these aren't really games. They're just mindless grinds.

Strategy - I haven't really played much of an actual strategy game since Company of Heroes. The most recent one would be Total War: Shogun 2. So I can't really comment on strategy games.

As others have suggested, perhaps you're not looking hard enough for games. Some of the more interesting and fun to play games I've come across are not big AAA titles from companies that are really good at screwing the pooch. I play a lot of games co-op with my little brother, here are some that we've had a blast playing:

  • Broforce
  • Divinity: Original Sin
  • Sniper Elite 2 & 3
  • Tower Wars
  • Torchlight II
  • Saints Row 3 & 4
  • Terraria

We're currently working on Dying Light - which is more fun with co-op over single player. Yes, it's a fairly well known game, but it's still entertaining.

For single player games, here's what I've been playing recently:

  • Pillars of Eternity
  • Defense Grid 2
  • Lichdom: Battlemage
  • Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

It's all personal perspective. Also, I think if you're waiting for some well known publisher to drop some awe inspiring AAA title for a new IP anytime soon, you're either going to be waiting a long time or sorely disappointed with what they offer.
