Sega had Sonic, Nintendo has Mario, Sony has... well, I don't really know. Crash Bandicoot? Snake? Whoever.
If you could nominate a character (or characters) to be the representative symbol of PC gaming, who would you choose?

Gordon Freeman?aliblabla2007
That was the very first person that came to my mind after reading the question, HL has broad appeal and is well-known across the PC gaming world, although I'm sure some people would not want a character that doesn't speak to the be the representative/mascot ;)
I'm going to say Gordon Freeman. Kerigan would have fit the bill in 98-99. Waiting a decade before SC2 has dropped her off the map imo.
you really cant just have one mascot for pc gaming, there are more games released for pc than anything else. its also why you cant easily pin one sony mascot, the playstation library has about 20,000 games (including imports). getting an xbox mascot is easy, youll have either master chafe or marcus fenix since the xbox library has about 2000 games. another reason you cant really have one pc gaming mascot is because there is no one game responsible for the popularity of pc gaming. you could say it was anything from doom to starcraft to WoW, but youd be wrong to say that doom and doom alone defines pc gaming. its kinda like defining american culture, you really cant find out what it truly is because its everything that makes up america. unless you wanted to go with consumerism, but thats yet again just a part of american culture, its not like every american has to buy a pair of jordans and an ipod to be truly american. i guess what im saying here is that pc gaming is too diverse, and while a few key games contribute to its popularity, they dont define gaming. i mean have you ever bought any of those off brand bargain bin rpgs at walmart? theyre definitely not popular, but i would have to say, they are a part of what makes pc gaming great.

I agree with you. As much as I love Gordan, I'm not sure how much a character that doesn't speak can represent PC gaming. What about Alyx? She is just as recognisble as Gordan and she speaks![QUOTE="Nitrous2O"][QUOTE="aliblabla2007"]Gordon Freeman?solid_mario

Alyx might not be a bad choice, but her role started with HL2. Gordon's got the gaming history and he's the central character, so I'd probably still choose him :)

clearly this, imo.
I had him in mind because he was there for PCs "big bang" if you will. You know the good ol days of Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake. he has earned his dues in the past 15 years.

and his face is pretty recognizable too, thanks to the unique healh meter. quite iconic, the guy.
This is a very tough one since PC gaming is represented by tons and tons of companies and every type of game. Coming to agreement on a single character for all of PC gaming would be nearly impossible.
I think the mascot should be a warcraft orc holding a desktop pc. Or... a pasty white unshaven balding nerd sitting at a computer with microwavable food wrappers and pop cans all around his desk... sorta like this guy...

Actually yeah, I'd agree with this one. Everyone's seen this guy.

* Grabs torch and pitchfork *
Crucify the heretic!
But seriously, Gordon and the Half Life games would probably be the best mascot/flagship franchise for the PC.[QUOTE="artur79"]Ok, ok, I was kidding.

you know, i wasted quite a bit of time yesterday installing the thing - my dvd drive wasn't able to read something or another almost 70% into the installation (which took like an hour!!!). so i had to copy and paste everything onto my hard drive and do it all over again. and then i spent a good hour or so trying to get the look of my female soldier character down (yes, i'm pathetic like that), so by the time i got into it, it was almost time to sleep. but the dialogue system, which i was a bit skeptical about initially, is actually not bad, and the combat is pretty good too (almost like a shooter), so the little i've played (about an hour), i've enjoyed thus far. not sure if i like the whole dialogue choices leading to renegate vs. *whatever the other one is called - naturally, i always play evil characters at first* thing; definitely, the dialogue system isn't as great as fallout's or vampire's or even kotor's and bg2's, but i see much potential, and i can't wait to ditch work and return home and play some more. :D
oops, i misspelled effeminate. haha.

Well, Gordon would be my first pick. But I wouldn't want just one character as the mascot, I'd rather have a group of characters all grouped together in an awesome picture as the representation, with Gordon in the middle and front as the "lead guy."
Along with him, I'd want Kyle Katarn, Cate Archer, Duke Nukem, The Doom Marine (the old one), BJ Blaskowicz (again, the old one), Commander Keen, Jazz Jackrabbit, the Descent Pyro ship (I know, not technically a character), Kerrigan, Diablo, and I'm sure a few other characters I'm forgetting.
Oh, and you'll like this, the background would have an overlay of Shodan behind all the characters standing around in their cool poses. Now, how badass of a representative portrait would that be?
i was about to say gordon freeman....but that would probably send out all the wrong messages to the masses.
so only one man can stand up to the plate....can kick ass and take names......duke nukem.
either him or JC denton. big coat...customisable....sophisticated killing machine....just like the PC :P.
