Hello, I'm planning on building my own gaming desktop machine with a couple of friends I have that know what they're doing.
I'm just making this topic to get all of your opinions on the specifications, that we're given to me about the PC I will be paying for and using.. Any help is appreciated or advice..Please don't flame, or anything..I'm just looking for some help, and advice because I'm not very good with computer specs.

All right, well I'll list the specs here:

3.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo Intel (Can over-clock to around 3.8 Ghz?)
500 GB HDD
4 GB Ram DDR2
Antec 1000 Watt Power Supply
Diamond Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI-E 2XDVI-I Video Card
Motherboard I can't remember the name but it's a p45 chipset by ASUS..

Any other specifiications you need I can get, but that's all I know/have right now..
We haven't ordered the parts or anything yet, but this is what we have in mind, and ready to go.
Let me know what you think, and any advice will be appreciated.
Also, please keep in mind this is a gaming machine, I'd like to be able to run games like Crysis on the highest settings (not necessarily using the highest resolution) And be able to play Far Cry 2 etc. Very well.

Thanks for all your advice, and help ahead of time. :D

Well a 1 Kilowatt Psu is overkill big time, a good 600 watt will do fine. On the Cpu make sure if your going to overclock to get a good heatsink for it also you may not even need to overclock. No one can run Crysis on highest settings but you will play the game fine. And you should be set with everyother game out there,

Okay, thanks for the advice... I thought the power supply was quite a bit powerful but apparently it's a good deal so if it's a good deal now and could possibly save me from a future upgrade, then I'm alright with getting it now.
Also, with regards to the overclocking, you don't think I'd have to overclock at all, and if it was overclocked it wouldn't have to be much?

Thanks for your response. :)

People who overclock are people who buy low end cpus and overclock to get better performance for less cost. Also other people overclock just to have bragging rights with benchmarks and gaming. After you get to a certain point overclocking becomes usless for the most part. So with a C2D at stock 3Ghz is fast enough for any game and two years down the road.

Oh I see, okay..So I don't really need to over clock my PC, but in the case that say a game wasn't running as well as I'd want it to, I could overclock my PC a bit to give it that little extra performance?

It all depends on the rest of the Pc like Graphics card,Ram etc... But if you got a dual core Cpu 2.4Ghz or greater theres no real need to overclock.

Antec 1000 Watt Power Supply
Diamond Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI-E 2XDVI-I Video Card

Power supply is overkill. Get a Corsair power supply, they're better. Like 550W or more if you wish.

If you live in the US, buy the Asus HD4870 from newegg for 285$ - 30$ MIR = 255$ + 3 year warranty vs 1 year with Diamond.

Newegg doesn't ship to Canada. The cheapest HD4870 in Canada I found is a Diamond for 268$ no MIR.

No it is not overkill you need a good psu with some high wattage for future upgrade that might require more juice

^ Lol 1000 watts come on.. you can with a good 600 watt psu with good 12v A rating, can hook up 8 devices that use the 4 pin molex power, 4-6 sata, 2 floppy, two 6pin pci-E graphic cards. and maybe have a 8pin power cable. I think that would be enough even for future upgrades for a couple of years.

That computer can pretty much run any computer game at the moment, but like others said, you should reduce the 1k wat power supply.

P.S. To the Thread Starter, how much did this computer cost (I live in Canada to, and I was just wondering about the parts-prices here).

Where are you ordering the parts from ? DirectCanada.com and ncix.com are the best etailers in Canada. You don't pay the GST tax if you don't live in BC, and Direct Canada has free shipping when you buy for more than 300$.

Nah actually it is over kill... Even for a Quad SLI set you do not need quite that much wattage.

The Corsair TX650 power supply would be good for your system, or if you want modular get the Corsair HX620.

I'm not really sure where I'm getting the parts from, my friend is ordering them all from the website he orders all his parts from so I trust him with what he chose... I'll show him the other options you guys have said, and see what he has to say, and maybe make some adjustments. :)
Thanks again all of you.
