So recently I was gifted a PC, and am working on fixing it up. I am planning on cleaning the insides due to it being quite dusty, but am wondering-how else can I evaluate the problem? Programs to check GPU etc? It only seems to happen when intense computing is needed.

shutting off is unlikely caused by a gpu. it's a motherboard safety kicking in when something is running outside of tolerable specifications. often something like an overheating cpu or a failing psu. start by checking cpu temperature (program like core temp or a cpuid tool). although if it happens right away then my first suspicion would be the psu failing to provide enough juice. can you switch it on again right after it happens?

I will monitor temps, but earlier I played probably 30 minutes of CS source no problem, later that day minutes. But I can reboot immediately.

What pc is it anyway, if it's an old one the psu is going to be the culprit most likely

Probably powe supply. The fact that you play CS with no problem tells nothing since its quite light game and even a semi decent gpu would play it at max settings without even been stressed . Download msi afterburner and hardware info 64 and enable in game Gpu+Cpu usage and temps and try to find the culprit ( in order to enable cpu monitoring in game on msi afterburner you need hardware info 64 and on the configure options you need to select the values you want to monitor and click on show on riva tuner OSD )

Yeah, that is very hot for a Phenom II X4. My son's Deneb maxes out at about 60C (3.6GHz/1.375v) using Prime95, and it gets hot where we live.. Also, go into your bios and crank the fan speed up to 100%...

what does a PC usually run? Like im running 42-50 with browsing of net etc, in game after few minutes at 70 something, which method is best for the thermal paste, just let the heatsink do its thing-and spread?

clean the cpu of all the old Thermal paste. Alcohol based cleaners work well as they dry very quickly. Put a pea size drop of paste on the centre of the cpu and then let the heatsink spread it. (depends on what paste you have, sometimes a spreader is better for the more thicker based pastes). Avoid putting to much on as it can inhibit the heat transference.

I am waiting on the thermal paste, from newegg! I am on other PC, patiently waiting!

Use a razor blade or your finger to spread the thermal paste around the cpu. While putting a pea sized dot in the middle may work well enough, you'll see why this is the incorrect method when your remove the heatsink. The corner areas of the CPU will not get covered with that method...

doesnt matter, most of the heat is in the centre, not the edges. Also have to be careful that you get no air bubbles if you cover the whole cpu like you've suggested.

It doesn't matter where the majority of the heat is. The entire IHS (integrated heat spreader) on the CPU distributes heat to the heatsink, so the entire HIS needs to be covered with a very thin layer of thermal paste...

absolutely. I think the biggest thing is not so much how its applied, but the amount being used.

Very true. It is just meant to fill in the microscopic cracks and holes, after all. It doesn't conduct heat nearly as well as the metal itself...

Remember that video only applies to a heatsink with a perfectly flat base, the 212+ base has slight gaps between the heatpipes and the plate so pea method often doesn't spread well.

I use wet 1500+ grit sandpaper to sand my CPU's and waterblock flat. Well, the CPU's that I'm going to liquid cool and overclock....

The first thing to do would be to monitor your temps with CoreTemp & GPU-Z, install the latest drivers, and monitor your voltages with a multimeter. Let us know how that goes.. Also, what are your PC specs? Be sure to name the brand of power supply...

OK, so it quits to the desktop.. the game is still there, but is now in a small window.. double clicking just makes it full screen.. but still windowed.

It does this at the start of the game.. F1 2012

In GPU-Z at idle

GPU1 - 71

GPU2 - 50

Fan:47%

Mem Clock is 801.5

it doesnt get much higher before the game goes to desktop and windowd mode.

but in game

In GPU-Z - F1

GPU1 - 81

GPU2 - 78

CPU looks fine, starts around 30 and doesnt get higher than high 50s

Some of my games start off in windowed mode, as well. As long as the games are working, I wouldn't really worry about it...
