I'm sure you guys have had countless amounts of posts like this but how do you feel between the pc and console war. I know this should be in system wars but you pc enthusiasts might be able to enlighten me with some useful opinions. Is it worth taking the time and errors of downloading the game to play it or do you rarely encounter problems. Are there any great pc exclusives not on consoles. Also what do you recommend as a starting rig. Thanks.

I rarely ever run into problems installing games. I don't see what console fanboys are saying about how games never seem to install right. There are a ton of great exclusives that are not on consoles. PC has the largest library of titles amongst any console. If you don't mind outdated graphics, PC easily has over 100 AAAE. For a starting rig, I suggest you make a post down in PC Hardware.

Arma 2, X3: Terran Conflict, Freelancer, TF2 (with updates), etc.

Such greatness simply cannot be had on consoles...

Kids buy consoles usually because they can't use PCs, so they say PC games don't work and are bad. Kids buy consoles, men buy PCs.

I agree with you actually. There are still plenty of good reasons to own consoles... and I love my PS3 and Wii... just not as much as my PC! :D

I've always been a PC fan. I'm not saying that consoles suck, I actually like a lot of the games on consoles, but I find the controls and multiplayer on the PC to be a better experience. My favorite game is the half-life series and I have tried it on the console and really didn't like it compared to the PC. But then its great to play a game like Fight Night with some friends on a PS3. For me it's not worth it to buy a console for just a couple games I would be interested in. I still might buy a PS3 because I need a blue ray player. No point in buying a stand alone Blue Ray player when you can get a ps3 for around the same price and be able to play games and listen to music on it as well.

I personally think that pc is capable of running better graphics and more expansive games, however, I also think that it is easier, and in many cases cheaper, to get your hands on a console rather than a high powered gaming computer that can actually run most games at their full capacity.

I don't see how a problem with downloading a game would be categorised as a PC gaming problem.

This is actually a common misconception. You can build a PC with console graphics for under £300. I saw a PC a few days ago with an amd athlon X2 @ 2.8 ghz and a 4850 for £350 new. Which can play games with better graphic settings than consoles. Seen as though most people have PCs anyway, getting a bit more powerful PC will save quite a bit of money. :D

There are pretty much whole genres which exist only on the PC, thanks to its unique interface. As for the whole PC-games-take-endless-tweaking-to-work stuff: it's a myth. If you're running a newish game on a newish system, it will work out of the box unless you've done something silly to your system. Also, PC's have massive backwards compatibility, so that PC gamers can usually happily run games from 20 years ago on the same system.

you can't just say im gonna make a compare between PC and consoles .... 1st and as a fact PC must be updated with new parts whether was a graphic card , Rams , CPU and so on .... consoles " just buy games and play " 2nd on consoles u dont have to activate ur game or to w8 for installing it ..... consoles " just buy games and play " 3rd if u think u got advantage on PC because u are using mouse and keyboard ... consoles got them too as an accessories the only 3 things that i agree with any PC owner that : 1- u have a tons of games to be played on PC 2- online mode is hundreds time better than consoles 3- PC is perfect for PXXNO sites .... :-) thats all ....

Look at a game like Empire: Total War, and imagine trying to even run it on a console, let alone actually play it.

Pc is endlessly upgradable and sets the standards to which consoles try and live up to.

Consoles are amazing for what they are, and they do gaming a great service by existing. For a long time i couldn't afford a gaming computer good enough to compete with Xbox 360 (i was limited to laptops due to military deployments) To get an equivalent laptop it would cost me around $2,000 to play games like Bioshock at equivalent graphical settings.

Computers are a lot more expensive, but they do a lot more. An xbox cost $250 and can play games that are on par with the average gaming computer that cost at leat $400. Then you throw in the OS and your double the price for equivalent performance.

To me computers offer a better gaming experience because of control options, you can use 360 controller if you want, but can't use mouse and keyboard on the 360. Modding potential, better exclusives, more cutting edge technology, upgradability, higher resolutions, better online capabilities, etc... And on top of being a sweet game machine its a full blow computer, which are a mandatory tool of the modern age.

Investing $1,000 into a computer FAR outweighs the computer gaming potential alone, its much more than just a game machine. Sink $1,000 into the consoles and you can play games, that's it.

BUT!!!

Consoles completely OWN computers in a vital area, Multiplayer at home with friends. When is the last time you and three friends sat back on the couch with four controllers and shared in a computer game on a big screen TV. I have a friend who tried to set this up but it was bulky, un-friendly, expensive, and just not the same due to lack of original intent with the games themselves. Computers games for the most part don't support four player co-op or split screen on a single rug, you have to get a LAN party going...

Big screen HD TV > LAN party imo. Easy to set up, comfortable, and doesn't take up an entire room with wires and hot computers.

They both have their ups and downs and both add to the overall gaming experience. Computers are my pick for "Best" but i wouldn't want to give up consoles either, they offer a ton of fun in their own right.

i much perfer pc's over consoles. i have my laptop for portable gaming and im building a new desktop for my main gaming needs. i havent run into any games that dont run well on my laptop plus when im done gaming i can use the exact same thing for work and school. also the controls are much better on pc. mice are 100000 times more accurate than a controller and a keyboard allows for customization. pc's dont have many exclusives anymore but they are much better for any genre of games. fps = better accuracy, rpg = more buttons for easier control, rts = EVERYTHING (console rts suck) along these lines pc's also have MUCH better graphics than thier console counter parts and they lag less with the better graphics (not all console games lag, but the ones that do dont have to on a pc).

the one thing that redeems consoles is thier ability to do splitscreen and co'op gaming easily. if they made pc games easy to work with in that aspect consoles would not have a reason to exist (minus the price). until then i will keep my xbox 360 for when freinds come over (only keeping rock band and call of duty 4) and my pc for everything else.

Even though it is pretty much just an FPS, the starndard for every rig should be Crysis, whether you play it or not doesn't matter, it's the experience of seeing this game in its full potential and glory that truly outshines consoles and shows those who were non-believers in the power of the PC that consoles are nothing more than pre-built paper weights. Crysis one of those few games that have started thousands off on the right path to PC gaming freedom, with a world of boundless choices and optimizations, PC's are miles ahead of consoles in every way. If you thought PC gaming was at the end because of consoles, play crysis in full glory and resolutions, and you too will believe. Project Offset, will be waiting as well, glad to see you are getting ready...

Said the "PC gaming is dying" guy.

Never had a problem with any of the recent games other than after-format missing register keys, very few have any notable bugs at all and even less games have bad performance, I only have a medium gaming rig and even Crysis can run maxed out at 30 fps.

At this point it's safe to say if you are experiencing problems they're undoubtely your fault.

On topic, Consoles' only good point is that they don't need a brain to be used. While PCs need some kind of OS maintenance to lighten the rig's workload, they are also the only platform that offers RTSs, MMOGs and decent FPSs, they have the best controls, and don't have as many hardware problems (OMFG RRoD!!1!), we get mods, addons and other player-made content, and of course they also have the BIGGEST game library. The only downside are the devs whining their asses off about piracy.

Problems with installations are typically the fault of the user and not the computer. If a problem is found that is the fault of the computer or game then a quick search should reveal the answer. I have had very few problems that I can't figure out within an hour of looking.

The reason it is better then consoles is simply the variety from idiot simple flash games to the complex Hearts of Iron. Name any kind of game you like and there are surely at least a FEW of the kind you are looking for. Not to mention the PC can play anything a console can from a gen-back.

I prefer PC, but I play both PC and consoles. Both have their place. The only two issues I have ever had with a PC gamewere Unreal's Cyrix processor incompatability and TF2 Vista driver problem. However, I have also hadconsole gamesthat absolutely would not run on newer/older versions of the console, so it goes both ways.

Those that say idiotic stuff like "consoles are for kids"; you're no better than the console fanboys so next time you have a thought... keep it. I started gaming when PONG was a new release and I've alwaysowned a gaming PC since the early 80s. There is value in having both if you can afford it.

1- I usually don't have any problem with games in PC or consoles, but when one happens, the solution is always much headbreaker in consoles.

In example: las time I had a problem in PC was running ArmA II after the installation, after starting the screen changed to black witha "out of range OSD display message. I search in the webs and after few minutes a friend say me about to change the default .cfg from 75 Hz to 60 Hz -was a problem with frequencies- and the problem was fixed. Last time I have a problem with a console game (Wip3out HD) there was a bug freezing the game if you had more than 50 friends in your list. It taked 3 WEEKS to the developers to fix the problem.

2-A good PC to start gaming is a rig with a Q6600 or equivalent, 2 GB of RAM and a 8800 GT or better. It usually guarantees to be able to play multiplatform games at X2 resolution (1680 x 1050 vs 720p), X2 framerrate (60 fps vs 30 fps) and X2 filters (X2/X4 AA vs X0/X2 AA) compared to the consoles ones. If you want to max very intensive games as ArmA II or Crysis then you must aim to the HD 4890 or GTX 275 (around 200 € nowadays). So, yes, is more expensive than consoles, but the jump in quality is huge, sometimes brutal.

3-Playin in PC is usually more confortable: you can chose between keyboard and mouse or control pad or joystick... in most of recents games, and you still can play PC in a 46" displays from your couch as with a console, but consoles usually lacks in variety of controls.

4-There's some ultra high rated games exclusives from PC, as all that coming from Blizzard, all rts from Relic, and very personal projects as S.T.A.L.K.E.R., The Witcher, ArmA II, Gothic 3... And some generes as rts simply don't work in consoles. Can you live without Starcraft II, without Diablo III? Consoles had their own strong franchises and generes (platforms, fighting games... ) but PC lybrary is fine.

5-MODs. Crysis Wars has 23 official maps, but I have 80 multiplayer maps from the game in my hard disc, and some sp mods. I paid nothing from these maps -are free stuff provided by talentous guys from the comunities-. Instead, in consoles you usually must pay for any crapy pack of 3 maps you want. The examples are endless.

6-Repairs: in 10 years, I've only had to cange from my PCs a couple of sources and mouses. If you console breaks you must await weeks to fix.

7-Backwards compatibility: you can play almost any game from the PC past in current PCs.

8-Lifespan: multiplayer games in PC can last for decades -see Diablo II, BF 1942, Starcraft...- even without mods. Most of console games -aside from Halo 2- die in less than 5 years, making impossible to keep playing.

So, consoles are good if you like some of his exclusives, if not PC is better gaming platform.

Consoles are for PC what a bycicle is for a Ferrari.

Really, who would play a FPS with a gamepad? And modding! Yay! Just check how much better Street Fighter IV is on the PC for it.

....just crashed in stalker clear sky with the patch 1.5.10.... right so its not my fault games are buggy as hell eg gta iv...plz take your crap elsewhere.....

And i bet you haven't even tried to look upon what is causing those issues either... Almost everything can be fixed on PC if you take the time to consult the technical support offered by both the devs and the community alike.

On topic: PC need lots of love and care so it can be a harsh platform for those who have little knowledge of computers. However it's hand down the strongest and most flexible platform there is. Once you set your eyes on PC's and understand them, you just can't go back to console unless you wish to play a console exclusive. Free DLC (unlike consoles), Free online (unlike consoles), mods (unlike consoles), great support, it has everything.

Consoles are easy to use... that's about all they have for themselves.

No something cannot be fixed, eg like the stutering issue in hl2 and some random crashes in stalker... both developers have aknowledged the problems since release and there is no valid solution yet.. so please stop, because i have an issue right now and no matter how hard i try to find solution i simply cant.

Crashes have many sources. Sometimes it is a known, documented issue with the software, sometimes it is the hardware... sometimes it is somewhere in between. I've found that most hardware issues stem from either buying pre-built units that are done cheaply or custom-made units with not enough research on the components before buying them. Most software issues are old drivers, drivers that are not compatable with older games and jumping on beta drivers too quickly.

I know it's weird, but I've actually grown so used to using a gamepad that I actually prefer it in some cases. I'm learning to use a mouse again for fps games, but I plug in my xbox controller for games like Wolverine.

Oblivion and Gears of War are notorious for performance problems. It's just a downside to PC gaming. Arma 2.... well.

Kids buy consoles, men buy PCs.

I love it

well, not to sound like a fanboy but it is true to a certain extent. although men do certainly buy consoles as well.

[QUOTE="dakan45"] No something cannot be fixed, eg like the stutering issue in hl2 and some random crashes in stalker... both developers have aknowledged the problems since release and there is no valid solution yet.. so please stop, because i have an issue right now and no matter how hard i try to find solution i simply cant.cluclap

Crashes have many sources. Sometimes it is a known, documented issue with the software, sometimes it is the hardware... sometimes it is somewhere in between. I've found that most hardware issues stem from either buying pre-built units that are done cheaply or custom-made units with not enough research on the components before buying them. and yet I have had absolutely zero issues with either game

the point is, the vast majority of issues people complain about come from their PC, not the games. Yes there are issues with games, even console games get patches but not all are the fault of the games like some would have us believe.

I know it's weird, but I've actually grown so used to using a gamepad that I actually prefer it in some cases. I'm learning to use a mouse again for fps games, but I plug in my xbox controller for games like Wolverine.

MangaJugs

yeah, im beginning to use my 360 controller a lot more now. much better for saints row 2 type of games.

Thanks.

console can be so much easier for casual gaming. i mean you just flop on the sofa. but pc gaming has so much to it, but it only goes so far unless your interested in pcs themselves. things like mods and mouse control, and the fact you can just plug in a controller, make it my preference. but if i could, i would have a console as well, for when i just want a spot of casual gaming.

i game on both (love the wii on the console front) but in the end i prefer the PC. i love that i get to choose my hardware and OS. i love that no one organisation dictates policy on the platform. i love that PC games are cheaper, multiplats are better and its exclusives are the best in the business (they just dont have the marketing budget the size of a countries GNP to sing it from the trees). keyboard and mouse is the best control system for everything except beat em ups, platformers and racing games (though i actually do very well in mcrae 05 with the directional keys) imo. playing games like gears or uncharted with a gamepad is a pain. i can also go and make my own games or mod existing games on my PC and i can share those mods with other people. i could go on. yes its a complicated beast (though the PS3 and 360 are not exactly a piece of cake these days) and yes some games can be problematic (though again thats been greatly improved sice XP....my PC experience since XP was released has been very good in terms of reliability. no mandetory reformatting, games very very rarely crash and performance is good). yes it can also be pricey...but again thats your choice. if you spend big bucks then you are not getting something that can just keep pace with the consoles...you are getting hardware that will frankly make a mockery of any console (and most other PCs) on the planet. but its worth it....its the most rewarding games platform on the planet. crackin exclusives, great multiplats, mods, top notch online multiplayer, brilliant services like steam and impulse and it remains on the rickity edge (not as rickity as it used to be mind..for better or worse)...where new tech is tested and new devs try and break into the industry with new ideas.

i rarely run into any problem with PC gaming, but the really beautiful thing about PC gaming is that there are numerous solutions to it and you can easily turn over it.also technical support is a blast. consoles have some great exclusives tho

Pc wins because of mods, and mouse and keyboard :) also if you can splash out mega money on a rig you can get much better looking games than console.

The community I find is much better than console :)
