Pentium 4 and ubuntu?

Hi i have an old PC with Pentium 4 in it but no Operating system installed and ive tried my upgrade windows 7 dvd but that dont work which i though it wouldnt been an upgrade version. I was wondering if i downloaded UBUNTU onto a disk and installed that on the pentium 4 machine would it work?. im on Ubuntu website now and the latest version is choose Ubuntu 12.10 and would this work on the P4 or would i have to download a early version of this?.

If ubuntu doesn't work, try puppy linux.

arghhh well i download and put ubuntu onto disk and started the PC with boot from DVD but the PC says invalid disk lol. Also found out that one of the HD is dieing as it says S.M.A.R.T error and i googled it and it means that one of the hard drive must be failing. So i unlpuged one hard drive and it still said so i unpluged the 2nd hard drive and inserted the other hard drive and it was fine.

I would give CrunchBang a try. It's a good distro. Easy to use, very lightweight in terms of RAM and CPU requirements, and supported by a really nice community.

It's definitely faster than Ubuntu on older PC's. By a noticeable margin.

I think windows 7 also comes with 32 bit operating system. Give it a try.Alexjones284

If Windows 7 (64bit?) didn't work, Ubuntu 64 bit won't work, but 32 bit of either should work fine.
