pretty long and interesting article, just follow the link to read - Welcome to the Jungle

i myself hate pk-ed by some random impolite noobs just becuz i'm new or he play longer than me, as the article said (He just launch his skill and attack and my character was just like being hasta la vista baby' by him. And what make everything worse is that in THAT level, THAT's the best spot for hunting! I tried to access the server again several hours after, BUT he's still there. Another hours AND he's STILL there.) in this situation the only thing I can do is talking **** to such idiot like "fxxking no life bastard". Ok then I quit & switch to CoD or Warcraft III (at least e-sport games are all about skill, u beat me just becuz you are better than me)

Today's mmorpg become even sadder, there are more skill-less mmorpgs coming out, you dont have to be talent to play mmorpg at a high level. The more time you spend the more powerful you are. Do I hate PK? Absolutely NO, I like competition but what I hate is the company put too much concern on grab money rather than take care of us (don't get me wrong, I support item mall, it's the best way the company can serve us free mmorpg. But.....you can see the situation now). There are four things the PK system care about: 1)money 2)more money 3)time 4) more time

I can't read that article, its so poorly written its almost illegible.

All I know is PVP is a part of the game, and needs to be handled appropriately in each MMORPG. Some systems are better then others. Age of Conan seems to be alot more skill based, so I think thats a game to look forward to.

I agree with you that MMORPG's need to find a way to make the game alot more skill based, but it is hard to do in that genre.

Forced PvP is very bad, no matter if your at a low level or endgame, if you want to solo/group, you should be able to, and all the way to the top. Full PvE servers are an obligation IMO. I have no time to waste with a community which plan on hindering me, they can help me or be gone, not hinder me.

No matter the system, 2 players should kills a loner IMO, it shouldn't be even remotedly fair. It limit the amount of abuse such as described...

Personnally I found faction PvP (or RvR) even worser than a chaotic situation where everyone can attack everyone. In a RvR setting, peoples just attack you right away, there are no co-existence. It is like the devs told them: Be a jerk and kill in peace. In a setting where everyone attack whoever they want, I am usually left alone...and usually can find lot of help. In a faction system, half the players can't help me from been ganked even if they want to. In a chaotic setting, there is nothing like fleeing...and then BAM, ganker owned by another dark elf rogue, just like him. Once a guy which I couldn't even possibly think of defeating attacks me...I send a tell to a friend and manage to survive until my friend comes...it was hilarious to see the ganker reaction, but wtf some of these peoples are thinking...they attack with a setting that is unfair and they get surprised that renforcement come in to kill them? :P If I can't outdamage an enemy regen and yet accept the fight without retreating 1 inch...that is suspicious, why would I do that if I don't expect heavy renforcements? :P

i've played WoW for over 2.5 years and while I abosolutely HATE HATE HATE being killed by higher level characters, it is NOT killing the community. This game has over 11 million players and keep growing constantly. I dont think it even dents it.

PvP is best part of the mmorpg.

Ofc PKing low levels is lame, but don't whine about it. It's part of the game and i never had any problems with it. Got killed couple of times by pk, so what. Come back next time or find new spot.

I think GuildWars has the PvP System pretty good, it takes more skill than other rpgs.

Agreed, even though Guild wars isn't an MMO many MMO's should take some lessons from guild wars, I could play there capture the flag all day for faction. And the guild vs guild stuff is absolutely outstanding, WoW on the other hand 5 minutes of any of their PVP maps and i wanted to throw my pc out the window.

Time equals experience/skill, so your statement falls to the ground. However, if you place a complete newcomer in a character of highest level and with maximum money, he will truly suck compared to someone who earned everything the hard way. Experience with a character is more important than level and equipment that a person doesn't know how to use.

You're right. FPS/RTS games are clearly a more fair fight.

The guys who PK in MMOs are total n00bs who need virtual skill to defeat someone.

This sentense is kind of funny. I think people are starting to use the term "noob" too loosely. How can they be "noobs" if they have been playing longer then you? And if you're new, that makes you the noob, not them. Anyway, I don't mean to flame your topic or anything, but I can barely read anything you or the article writer have said. I'm interested, but it's basically illegible as someone else has said. If english isn't your first language, keep studying. If english is your first language, this is kind of pathetic.

PvP is in no way killing MMORPGs - if you don't want to be PvPed, don't join an auto-on PvP MMORPG.

Wired had an interesting article about griefers in their latest issue. If you aren't interested in reading the whole article, take a look at the EVE Online part.

When will people understand that MMOs are entirely based on how much time you spend playing? There's no skill, just who has the most boring life = autowin.

When will people stop posting such stupid comments like this. Sure time=gear your character has which gives a HUGE advantage. But skill is important in MMOs. It's a freaking fighting game for crying out loud.

God forbid someone that puts more time and effort into a game has a stronger character than you  griefing is one thing, pointless click fests like Guild Wars are another .... but games that promote better characters are much better imo...

Liek real life? we are not all balance, im gonna go with the typical interweb lingo and say QQ more on this one.

Skills in RPGS? since when? RPGs have always beena bout Quests/grinds ... skill? using rock paper scissors abilities? spam healing? Spam damage ect has never been skillful ... well ... not in the same sense that an FPS is ....

You cant base 1 genre on another, RPGs is just grind and optmize your characters utilizing thier SET abilities, FPS = reaction time & Experiance with mechanics for common sense ... RTS = Micro management.

PvP is a required funcation of any game that hopes to do remotely well for itself. Just look at LotRO for example. A great game in many respects but without PvP it lacks excitment and interest. Also, the beautiful thing about most MMO's that allow serious PvP is that they often give you many different ways to NOT get yourself into PvP situations, whether through a flagging system or zones that don't allow PvP.

for god's sake why cant people see that the game requires even a LITTLE skill? Look at how Chess requires skills, look at how poker requires skills. S**t look at Monopoly even. I mean of course winning in WoW mostly all about gear and class but there are many times when 1 person can kill 4-5 players at a time, and i've definately seen it. Skill = "the ability, coming from one's knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc., to do something well" If 1 person outsmarting 3-4 players of the same level and killing them all single-handedly isn't skills to you, then you all obviously have your own definition of "skill" which differs that of the dictionary.

Erandel

Then, if the MMO doesn't have a PvE server, it's PvP is killing it as some players don't join it. Furthermore, if it was the only MMO interesting this player, he won't play any MMO because of the lack of a PvE server on this precise MMO. Considering that ALL MMOs main activity resolve around PvE, I don't understand why some opt to have no PvE-server...sound like a nazi GF!

I am happy we agree.

You kids playing WoW have no clue what a reall MMO is, back in the days of the original Ultima Online we had a real MMO. There was nothing like the fear of going into the woods to chop trees to get wood but being careful to not stray too far and to stay alert for murderers. You traveled in groups when possible if you were not a strong character. You formed lynch mobs to go out and hunt murderers as well. If not for PK'ers the game would have been dull.

Saying that, it was Ultima Online that launched the MMO craze, so the game that started it all featured PKing, so how is PKing killing MMO's again? Silly. The problem is people whining about PKing are the ones who killed MMO's. Ultima Online died when the care bears got their way.

Exactly! Player vs Player fights in an MMO are never balanced, its who has more uber lewtz and xp. If you want a balanced and fair fight, stick with an FPS/RTS, where each player is given an equal chance from the beginning.

MMOrpg's are in essence massive grindfests, grind for rep, experience. Even most quests involve grinding.

That said the only thing that really reliefs from the tedium of grinding is PvP and social stuff. Me being a social neanderthall turns me to the pvp.

Battlegrounds, Arena's and designated PvP spots cannot compare to world PvP and PK'ing. Theres nothing funner then cruelly and brutally gan- .. 'relieving' someone of their grinding routine.

I do like PK'ing even if it's higher level versus lower level(s) on the flipside I do enjoy being ganked once in a while, even corpse camped. It's not even an annoyance. Especially in games like World of Warcraft where the only penalty is a corpserun.

The whole genre would be a boring grindfest without world PvP and general PK goodiness for folks like me. And I am definetly not alone in my likeing to ganking and being ganked.

My Corp Por's are bigger then yours. If WoW is you're first MMO then don't talk about PvP becauase you've never really played PvP. Try playing full-loot with death penalties and open PvP and then, just MAYBE, you can complain a little bit about PvP.

Ehhh...I don't know how I feel on this issue. On one hand I like the idea of players being able to keep the community in line through player killing. On the other hand, it's super annoying when you're out trying to accomplish something and some random tool comes by and kills you for ****s and giggles.

In Last chaos ( An MMO I liked, but never play anymore ) I was fairly high level at the time and I was sort of like the enforcer, if you are a PKer I PK you sort of thing. Man ganking inpolite people was so fun, so I sort of like the ability to PK people
