Well, I reformatted my PC a week ago, and was looking to get back into Skyrim, only to discover that my Skyrim directory is a complete mess (I rely on the Nexus Mod Manager to keep track of and update the 50+ mods I play with). Now, without the Nexus Mod Manager, the directory is just a mess of files. In preparation for Dawnguard next month, I'm going to simply redownload Skyrim and replay the game without mods, so that I won't have mods corrupting my save files.

Then again, I did play most of Skyrim without mods (like 85 hours) and found it completely fine. It was only towards the last five hours that I played it that I downloaded many, many mods (that was around the time the Creation Kit came out). I haven't touched Skyrim since.

Your thoughts? Is it worth my effort to rebuild my mod directory? I didn't install very many gameplay mods - most of my mods were texture mods/model replacements, plus a few player-made homes, and some custom clothing.

Texture mods do not really affect the game so I doubt they would cause bugs or crashes, even with Dawnguard Why not try the game without mods for now, and add them as you play?

I personally can't play it without mods, as many of my character builds are centered around certain mods. Not to say the vanilla game was bad, but modded, it's incredibly better

i use a few gameplay mods like frostfall which i would really recommend. skyUI is also mandetory imho. usable lantern is also handy. also disable quick travel. i recently started and also commited to walking everywhere or using in game travelling services like carts outside some towns. these can be quick and easy to get from the steam workshop. i like vanilla skyrim bit slightly tweaked skyrim is quite a bit better imho and worth the effort.

I never disable quick travel. It compresses the game for me.

As for SkyUI, yes, that is a must.

A Quality World Map is a must, makes the map so much easier to use.

Good man. On the subject of mods ; after I played Oblivion ûber-modded on PC, I got pretty disappointed when I played it "vanilla" on Ps3. I always looked for mods that would make the game better-looking (sky-mods, water-and landscape mods), and lots of armor mods. We PS3 and Xbox360-owners miss alot of the really good mod-community stuff. I say embrace it!

This is exactly what I will be doing because I have so many mods that my save got kind of corrupted, so I will be re-installing Skyrim and doing a vanilla playthrough. Gotta get prepared for Dawnguard next month. Although I will be using some mods like SkyUI, Skyrim HD 2k, Quality World Map, but thats probably it. Other than that I'm just going to do a complete vanilla playthrough.

As did I. Maybe people here are playing a different version of Skyrim?

But yeah the mods are great, I do wish the SKSE wasn't so difficult. So many guides often miss a step, and its supposedly easier to install then the Fallout Script Extenders.

I'm tempted to try some mods, I just don't know where to begin - it seems to change week by week what's recommended. My main beef is that the vanilla game is outright uninteresting in terms of game design, A to B, kill things along the way, listen to some terrible writing, rinse and repeat. So far at least, I'm still only 12+ hours into the thing (same issues with Oblivion, though Skyrim is far better). Maybe because I'm playing a Mage and spending most my time lighting zapping things to death, and scowling at the insufferable characters. I'd just like an experience that I hear about so often - acts of survival, people genuinely role playing - and it seems like quite a bit of that is dependent on mods ontop of the existing framework.

The only way I would play a Bethesda game is without mods. I want the developer's vision, not someone elses.

just delete it and redownload them with the mod manager, skyrim is a game that MUST be played with mods.

its like everything, a game can be great (skyrim is a good game even vanilla) but mods just enhance that experience, doesn't mean you can't play it without them, but modded skyrim > vanilla skyrim

So you won't actually have a 'bad time' at all as you originally claimed? Make you mind up, mate...

it cerrtainly wasn't me who said you will have a bad time playing it without mods so why you put words in my mouth?

i said it was better than unmodded skyrim, never said vanilla skyrim was bad, i even said it was good in the post you quoted, and it wasn't me who posted that pic

I can live without mods, but there are some that do make the game better for me. Enhanced blood textures and Sounds of Skyrim are musts for me.

I rarely use mods. There is only one mod I consider a must have and that's Sky UI. But to me, I choose mods that enhance the game in ways that stays true to the developers' vision. Essentially I ask, how "official" looking is this mod? Although, I do have fun mods that I activate for sh*ts and giggles every once and a while :D (dragon farts, exploding chickens, Project PEW, Actor Magnet).

you are a scrub who can't even read the name of the poster and confuses me with someone else, then comes with these kind of brain dead answers, yes you are failing very hard, but keep trying though, is it reading the names of the poster too hard for you? no wonder you can't even understand whole posts, too many complicated words for you.

I found a mod package which installs all the best and latest mods with a simple installer. I used to add in every single mod myself but it was time consuming.

I like how you're trying to emulate my speech patterns. You're failing miserably, but I like it. Did it ever occur to you that I might not have been referring to your post in the first place? No, of course not. That would be expecting too much.
