8GB Main Rig
4GB AMD Rig
4GB Notebook

There's no reason not to have at least 4GB, it's that cheap and useful.

Also, I can overclock as well as I could when I had 4GB.

BTW for you 8GB is too much bashers, I've used 5.5GB while playing a single game. (Up from 1.7GB idle) 8GB can be very handy and it increases the computer's general ability to perform, allowing it to allocate more resources to being zippy. (Vista and Better, that is)

4gb... its all you need in this era unless you run multiple servers off your pc. I hate seeing 6gb and 8gb of ram... its such overkill for absolutely no reason.

samuraiguns

well, not really, for triple channel DDR3 memsticks, 6GB of ram seems to be the sweet spot right now...

Even 3x1GB is enough for triple channel. Windows 7 actually uses less RAM then Vista does from my personal experience.

I have 4GB and I never even used 75% of my memory and I was playing Crysis, listening to music via Windows Media Player, and downloading stuff all at the same time. So unless you have like 10 windows open you don't need over 4GB of RAM. I was also using Windows 7 which uses less RAM then Vista.

Hehe... I'm also have the old pc which 8-9 years old and my old pc uses 64 MB RAM. This RAM value of my old PC is lower compared to my new PC which using 1 GB RAM.

8gb, making my OC attempts a living hell right now on my p5q deluxeAzNs3nSaT1On

Oh, man do I know the feeling. I have a P5Q D *gb of ram and a quad. You might want to try Ket (XS)/ KetXXX (TPU) modded bios. I'm on 2001m and it's working wonders for me. I also found a custom prime setting that will show errors from the MCH and ramfaster than anything that I have tried by far if you want it. I'm stable as can be right now, but it wasn't fun getting there.

Push that FSB up near or even past 450 and you'll be singing a different tune about overclocking as easily, given you don't need thaat kind of clock speed for games. Throw in a Quad and it's even harder, very very stressfun on the northbridge.

[QUOTE="muirplayer"]Suppose the people with 8gb of ram aren't trying to overclock?AzNs3nSaT1On
mine is prime stable at 3.85ghz but then again empire total war crashes on me sometimes but i have no idea whether its a problem with my OC or its in the game itself. P.S. does anybody know if a computer can be prime stable but not be game stable?

I would pass Prime small fft, blend, Linpack (Intel Burn Test), Memtest 86+, and 3.8. I'm talking long runs here too. With those clock I would still have weird crashes and graphical corruption. Then I found a post at XS that had a couple of custom Prime settings that I failed in 2 minutes, no joke. Haveing a quick repeatable test to find errors really helped me out.

Prime95 x64

Test 1 (This is the one that I failed in 2 minutes)

Custom

Min FFT size= 128

Max FFT size= 1024

Memory to use= (set all of you available memory) varify in task manager

Test 2 (I hear that this is better for 775)

Custom

Min FFT size= 4096

Max FFT size= 4096

Memory to use= (set all of your available ram) varify in task manager

Your VTT, vNB, and nbGTL will play a big role here. Also this board like most Intel chipsets performs better on a divider other than 1:1 so you may want to try and get off of that 1:1 divider. Also set you Row to Refresh Cycle time to 55.

I've been well past that mark. I simply keep it at 3.8Ghz for convenience. It is not a problem in the least. 8GB is very handy. I use well more than 4GB while playing games alone (EQ2, TF2, etc). $45 well invested.

Well, I was using 4gb. But every RMA replacement from eVGA has had a bad memory controller, so I can only use 2gb. They kept telling me, "We'll check all four RAM slots at once.. I promise." Well, they didn't. One guy even said he would do it personally. But I called the next day, and he had no clue who I was, nor did he remember saying that....

Same here, but I wouldn't mind some Intel Burn Test to be honest since it stresses the MCH harder than a prime blend.

Ever consider that I don't have time to please the internet? I don't have Prime95 installed since my last format nor the time to let it burn for hours. I keep my OC reasonable during the summer becuase I like it cool in here. I can't help it that one guy wasted time and effort on an inefficient cooling system and one thinks quads are relevant in gaming.

Lol, Prime95 takes what, like 5 seconds to download? And 48C max core temp @ 4.5GHz fully stressed w/ Prime95 using small in place FFT's is inefficient?? No.... Claiming that your CPU @ 4.2GHz won't go over 50C using an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro is a complete lie. I just called you out on it. Especially since you were hating on my mod. I would go well beyond 4.5GHz with ease, but my FSB wall is about 2000MHz.

I kind of think that he is full of it as well, I had an AC Freezer myself, but it's not like clock speeds matter that much in gaming anyways. You don't even need 3.8ghz, tbh. I garentee that he wont pass that custom prime blend that I mentioned.

I wouldn't even had mentioned it, but he ruined my thread about my liquid cooling system that I built. He wondered in and did nothing but criticize me. I actually don't mind criticism, but lieing to make me look bad got on my nerves at the time...

I found this little gem in there as well.

Lots of air flow and reasonable ambient temps keep things chill But yeah, reapplying the thermal paste couldn't hurt. Only reason I'm sitting on 3.8 Ghz is cause my ram is linked to my FSB (bad Gigabyte, bad!) and I don't have time to play with the ram timings, voltage, and latches and such

Kind of contradicts what he said a few posts back. Anyways your ram would perform horribly unlinked, you want your ram on a divider.

Just bought 2x2gb sticks of DDR2 1066MHz RAM (5-5-5-15), so I'll finally have 4GB again. I picked up another G92 while I was at it :D

I'm stable as can be right now, but it wasn't fun getting there.

haha thanks for the tips, I think right now I'm settling with 3.91ghz overclock, too afraid of intel burn test because the room ambient temperature is insanely high. I'm gonna wait till winter when I try to get 4 ghz again.

I don't even use IBT, anymore. I've found that if you can pas a few hours of that custom Prime run and a long small fft run that you an easily pass IBT. It puts an insane load on your processor well above tdp that you will never see in real world useage and since I perfer not to use loadline the increaced vdroop from that insane load will cause "instability" that you will never see but IBT dosen't allways pick up on instability as well as some other programs. HyperPi is also a good stress test. I also don't see the need for 4ghz while gaming, tbh.

im only running 2GB but im only running XP 32bit. However i might just throw in an extra gig to make 3GB, cant hurt can it, allthough it would stop my ram from running in dual channel which might hurt my performance just slightly
