There was another discussion about this topic, and I would like to know what PC gamers think about Halo and Halo 2.  Do the Halo games stand out when compared to classic PC FPS games?   Note, I'm not asking whether the games are good; I'm asking whether they were so great that they deserve all the hype they have received over the years.

Halo and Halo 2 are way overrated. What's so revolutionary about Halo. A rechargeable shield systems and only welding 2 weapons. But there was vehicles in the game. Command and Conquer Renegade had many vehicles in the game and it came out before Halo. Halo is good but shouldn't be acclaimed as the best FPS or top 5. Far Cry I considered was more revolutionary in the sheer size and scope of the missions. Halo is one of the most overrated games of all time.

Halo 2 is a very good game, but it just doesn't compare to the original Halo and hopefully won't compare to Halo 3. It has a great story, great action, and great fun. It's just way too over hyped.

Halo is a great game. It's halo 2 that is grossly overrated, and soon the same will happen for halo 3. The games graphics look almost no better than halo 2's for crying out loud.

But isn't that a bit encouraging, considering that means more resources are being spent on making the game fun, instead of just pretty?

The Halo series is amazing. Halo 2's online was and still is simply amazing. Halo 2 online play consumed those who played it. No other game has the same teamwork and communication in every game. Play any other game (BF series, Counter Strike) and it takes effort to find people to work with you as a team and that have mics to communicate with you. Halo is simply amazing that it takes no effort, to start a game get a team or automatch and begin to have fun. Online computer games require you to get vent, along with a mic, along with signing up on clan forums and then getting into your squad at the same time. It simply gets annoying to take that much effort to get a group effort to win a game. With the Halo serious want some team work find some good people from a few match made games and get playing.

What the fudge are you talking about? Halo was a fun game for me, and I agree with the guy who posted how easy it is to get set-up. I can't believe you guys are really saying its an overrated game.

Yes, overrated. Single player was fun at first with the Covenant aliens and ally NPCs, but then the Flood kicked in and it was all shoot and strafe till they all die. Plus, there are boring, repetitive, poorly designed levels FPSs, but the Library is a whole new level - I almost threw my keyboard at my monitor in frustration. Ending was nice, but by that time I was more relieved to be getting out of the repetitive, Flood-infested hell-hole than actually enjoying the said ending. Cut out the Library and the Flood, add more Banshee dogfights, and it would have been a far more enjoyable experience. As for multiplayer, big maps and vehicles might be interesting, but UT2004 is better IMO.

Yeah I tottaly agree. The single player is the only part I enjoy of Halo. I went to my friends house and he went online, and all he did was strafe, shoot a rocket, pull out a pistol, shoot randomly, and say he pwns everyone at the game. Thats usually what you get when playing Multiplayer on Halo.

That's what people would think , but look at these "crazy" trailers that they've been releasing where the devs try their hardest to talk about some new innovative aspect to the MP. Anyone can read through the bs and tell it's practically unchanged. Even looking at the recent gameplay vids show that it's practically unchanged with just the addition of some new (and old) weapon models and some pretty ugly graphics. Last year when people first saw the games graphics you could give them the benefit of the doubt, but it's almost 100% likely now with that new gameplay trailer that those graphics will be present in the BETA. If that's indeed true then there's an extremely high chance that those graphics will in fact be what you see in the retail game.

It's not so much that the haters haven't got over it after all these years, it's that fans (mostly Xbox-ers) haven't got over it either.

Halo when it came out was great. It was the only game you played with friends and at lan partys. It was pretty basic but the way the game moved and the easy interface controls and motions made it great and easy playing. Single-player was great and awsome in co-op. The game in my opinion is also still one of the best looking on x-box till halo 2 and farcry came out.

As for Halo-2 I was disapointed. I really don't care for dual wields since you can throw grenades nor switch quicky between weapons. But it still was fun to play.

Halo 3 thank god is bringing back my favorite weapon. The assualt rifle. I loved taking out shields then butting them with the gun. Great fun.

Also UT07 (3) will pwn Halo in all regards. A true, pure FPS game. Nothing but straight shooting and team playing the way I love it. Also going to love the mods that soon pour out. I think ut04 had 400 mods and 600 maps. UT03 will be awsome with 18 vehicles and over 3 dozen typs of weapons. Tons of game modes and huge and small maps. Also I love the addition of the hoverboard shood be fun!

halo sucks. thats it. its a below average shooter. how it became so popular i will never know. the shooting isn't that great, you don't get that impact feeling as you would in say call of duty 2. the weapons suck beyond belief. the needler? for christ sake, that is the most useless weapon ever created in the history of games. the driving was an absolute failure, i've driven better on sleeping pills (long story, dont ask  ). the enviornments were the same damn thing over and over. it just sucks. it sucks it sucks it sucks it sucks. xbox or pc, this game blows majorly.

The poll is biased...You have 3/4 of the available options making Halo look good, the lowest option you give to people is "below average"?   Where's the "Halo sucks horribly" option?

Yes, its an extremely overrated game in terms of official reviews and in comparison to PC first-person shooters, but I feel it deserves every bit of appreciation it gets from its fans.

Why?  Because the series is the best shooter the console has.  While it doesnt even compare to games such as Halflife 2, Far Cry, FEAR, and even Quake 4 and Doom3, the game is none-the-less a good game on console.  Add to that the extremely fun split screen deathmatch and co-op gameplay and you have a rock-solid game.

Personally, I find the Halo series to be a yawn-fest.  But thats only because I am a PC gamer and am used to really good shooters, but for console its a good game.

Yes it is overrated.  I also like how Microsoft is trying to market Halo 2 as a reason to upgrade to Vista. :P  I already owned Halo 2 for one day and I only played 25 minutes of the online multiplayer before trading it in!

Some of the replies make me smile.

As PC gamers, I'm sure ALL of you know that ORIGINALLY Halo was going to be developed soley for the PC. Then MS purchased Bungie and the rest is history.

I remember back then, My 4600 Ti was top of the line hardware. My friend Seth and I would talk about how awesome Halo was going to be while playing Tribes/Starcraft/CS and the like at our weekly LAN parties with Matt and the rest of the "gang". Back then Halo was what Crysis is now. It was still a ways off, but it was HIGHLY talked about and anticipated.

And you people dare to say you weren't talking about Halo back when it was in development? Psssshhhh.

As a game, sure it's definitely not a Half-Life(my fav PC FPS), but the Halo series is definitely better than that excuse called Doom 3.

So, it's not this, "OMFG so AWESOME" game, but it's pretty darn far from Over-rated or Bad. Good lead character, great storyline IMO(even though they dropped the ball a bit with Halo 2). It'll be great to finish with Halo 3 and see what else they can do with the world afterwards.

The multiplayer plays like Halflife 1 at the pace of Quake 1.  Slow, boring weapons, inaccurate and barely customized controls.  Reminds me of GoldenEye for the N64.  Halo multiplayer pretty much represents the best of console FPS shooters.  Gears of War multiplayer may stand out from that comment, I have not played it.

Um, no, actually it is still quite relevant.  Halo 2 is being released on PC pretty soon and there's another little title called Halo 3 that is being released on the Xbox 360 this year.

I did nothing but hate on Halo constantly until I was outmanuevered into playing it.
One multiplayer session convinced me to buy an XBox in 2003.  If Halo wasn't an amazing game, how could it make someone who was an anti-xbox + halo fanboy pull a complete 180?

 Low standards.

I have a similar situation, my friend got an X-Box for the same reason. He's also the same guy that did it with this one girl who was at least 40 with three kids, overweight, and gross in pretty much every way. He was drunk, though, but he did scream when he remembered it.

Halo and Halo 2 are above average games at best. I think 9.0 was spot-on score for the original's PC version at GS, but i think its overrated on X-Box. Probably should have been about 9.2 or 9.3.

i've played all of them on both xbox and pc, and they were just barely above average to me.  story, gameplay execution, characters, sfx, gfx - all just ok...

the only thing really stood out to me about the series was the soundtrack.

Halo is way overhyped. A good, even great game, but not legendary, not a 9.8 or whatever GS gave it. The Halo community is too full of BOOM HEADSHOT types.

even with out all teh cars and what not  UT99 or quake 3 multiplayer is better than halo.

Then UT2004 and ut2007 came and did cars and planes the right way.  Just about any PC shooter can run with it and the good ones make the games look average and I won't even talk about controls

Halo is something that mimics a Real PC shooter on xbox for console people who do not know better so they can think shooters are the best thing ever nothing more nothing less.

Though I do love the art story and enemy AI in single player, everything else does not live up to a PC shooter.

Halo is a good game, Halo 2 is massively overrated.
But the series is nowhere near the "god" status that Xbox gamers claim it to be.

if you're referring to the Halo for PC, then there's no way it's overrated. look around and you'd see that the entire pc community shares the hobby of bashing Halo.

if anything it's vastly underrated.

I think Halo is a decent game, but mainly because it was the first good multiplayer shooter for Xbox. In fact, it's still one of the best. But singleplayer isn't as good as it's hyped up to be. I got bored of it after a few levels, because of pointlessly confusing levels that seem to drag on. But still, coop is a lot more fun than normal singleplayer, and multiplayer is great, it's the most played game for my and my friends parties.
