It's a great game (Halo 1,) but many of its fans vastly overstate HOW great (i.e. "The best FPS ever".)
Halo 2, on the other hand, is mediocre all around. I really hope Halo 3 turns out significantly better.
if you're referring to the Halo for PC, then there's no way it's overrated. look around and you'd see that the entire pc community shares the hobby of bashing Halo.
if anything it's vastly underrated.
Jinroh_basic
Not really. There's plenty of people within the PC community who see Halo for what it is. A good FPS.
Most of the hate goes towards Halo 2..and rightfully so imo, that game was such a huge disappointment for many FPS fans - sporting nothing more than below-average singleplayer and broken (very unbalanced and shallow) multiplayer.
Its first impressions are nice (which is probably why it scored well - the game's presentation is top-notch,) but you'll come to these realizations once you've spent a significant amount of time with the game. That is, if you've played many other (good) FPS games.
Both Halo 1 and 2 are very mediocre games when it comes to the maps, they are too repetitive and it makes me vomit to see the EXACT same mapping for the tenth time in a row in one single map. Really really lazy. That's why it is severely lacking in the fun department.
Also, the weapon and NPC models are very bland, and Master Chief is really becoming old and uninteresting now when you have seen about 10½ million avatars and sigs all over the internet.
The gameplay, sound etc. is fine but it no way near deserves 9.7/9.4 or as much attention as it is currently getting, there are far more original games coming to all consoles that are far more interesting than any Halo game.
i think its not overrated...
maybe its not a very unique shooter but there is somthing great and fun about it that makes you keep playing...
i love this game a lot more than R6:Vegas (this is overrated!!!!) and not just because R6 is a tactical shooter. Halo is just a lot more fun to play....
Yes, its an extremely overrated game in terms of official reviews and in comparison to PC first-person shooters, but I feel it deserves every bit of appreciation it gets from its fans.
Why? Because the series is the best shooter the console has. While it doesnt even compare to games such as Halflife 2, Far Cry, FEAR, and even Quake 4 and Doom3, the game is none-the-less a good game on console. Add to that the extremely fun split screen deathmatch and co-op gameplay and you have a rock-solid game.
Personally, I find the Halo series to be a yawn-fest. But thats only because I am a PC gamer and am used to really good shooters, but for console its a good game.
mrbojangles25
I agree.
For god sakes people just give the freakin game the credit it deserves. The fact the YOU, PC GAMERS, are still talking about the game TO THIS DAY should tell ya something. Whats with people needing to validate their dislike of something by saying it's "overrated"? Does it make you somehow feel better? It really puzzles me...I mean...the game came out YEARS ago, yet we still have these sour grapes whinning about how it was supposed to be a pc game, and how they didn't like this, or didn't like that, bla bla bla bla.
It's obviously was a great game, hense, you people are STILL talking about. If it were a crap game, it would have dissapeared into the nothingness that crap games always do...
Of course PC gamers are going to whine about Halo being overrated. It almost single-handedly brought Gaming into the mainstream, and now there's an Xbox in every Frat house in the country, and millions of people who share what used to be a pretty exclusive hobby. Many of those millions are the kind of people who picked on the gamers for being loseres, and gamers feel cheated now that they call themselves gamers. PC gamers also tend to fancy themselves as the most "hardcore" of all gamers, and they have a hard time accepting that a great FPS can be found on a console.
Halo is a great game. There's no way in hell that anyone can consider it the greatest FPS ever, but it's a great game nontheless. The gameplay is excellent, the controls are responsive and easy to learn/use, and it was one of the first games to effectively utilize vehicular combat. The weapons are more or less well balanced(there are a few exceptions) and it has a great soundtrack. There are several flaws, such as bland, repetitive level design, but for the most part it's a good game

I'm assuming he's greatly, greatly exaggerating, or is just wrong.
But it is true, at least in certain circles that I'm familiar with, that everyone I know always 'played' video games, but nobody I knew was a 'gamer' until Halo 1.. Then they got bored with simple-minded console games (of course), until Gears of War came out, then the fad came back again : p (with different people, though, this was after I joined the military, so I dunno about the Halo people)
When Halo first was released on the Xbox, many console gamers were like "this is the best shooter game ever." Unfortunately, half of them were never pc gamers and had no idea what a good shooter was. It always seemed unfair that pc shooters never got the recognizition that Halo got, even though many of them were better games.
Halo was good, but I played many pc shooters that were much better.
Halo for Xbox was really revolutionary. It brought a really unique style of fast-paced, exciting gameplay but still gave you tactical choices. All the weapons and vehicles were well balanced (except maybe the pistol) and single and multiplayer were both fun. However, by the time it got to the pc it wasn't great. It was good, but not on par with newer games.
IMO Halo 2 isn't very good. With dual-wielding and so many more weapons, everything just seemed bogged down and not unique or balanced.
So I say Halo was a superb game, not overrated, although not revolutionary. Halo 2--not so great.
I've played FPS from the beginning on early Pc's to the console equivalent.
Many (especially PC/Mac die-hards) feel that Halo CE is only a good game due to the fact all console shooters sucked at the time. Many believe that without the processor power and k/m combo console shooters are lame.
Well I think this is crazy talk by many gamers. I played Halo CE on release and it like Deus Ex, System Shock, Goldeneye, Half life and a few others, will go down in history of FPS.
Halo CE was an out-standing game. I remember playing PC titles at that time MoH and a few others out then on PC were lovely titles especially online but they didnt match upto Halo CE. For me Halo CE was the first game that out did what the PC has always done best only Goldeneye had previously come close to doing better.
Halo CE was a special game.
very few games have made me think WOW!! This game made me buy a bloody Xbox which i was determined not too for a long time. PC and Ps2 was fine for me...
As for Halo 2 its a good game nothing amazing like what halo CE did in its time but a nice evolution. Like Deus Ex IW after Deus ex. Its always hard to live up to such a great achievement. Invisible war destroyed Deus Ex which is a shame coz it was a pretty decent game.
halo 3 I'm sure will be great but Bungie has got a lot to live up to...
Just like Crytek with Crysis...
First off I'm just responding to the OP because I didn't read the other posts. IMO halo was the first real great CONSOLE FPS and should be regarded as a great console game but compared PC FPS its just average. I will admit had I had alot of fun nights though playing halo multiplayer with buddies 16 man on 4 different tv's..captalchol
007 and medal of honor were the first real great console FPS games.

Well i played almost all Pc shooters at that time. My fav genre and the only half decent thing on consoles at the time before Halo CE was probably mess about arcade shootera like Timepslitters.
I can remember loving the GR, DE, MoH, SS, Wolfie, CS, TFortress, Operation Flashpoint, Unreals, Quake 3Arena among others on PC. Soooo many great games but Halo CE was up their with the best Pc titles if not better than most.
I find it hard to understand how a FPS fan cannot love Halo CE. I'm not saying its the greatest game ever but it sure is not an average shooter on PC or consoles at the time.
An average shooter is something consoles are full of but Halo CE is not.
IMO....lol

i'm sure he's talking about psx. moh and moh: underground had superb sp gameplay for its time, while bond had the lock on mp. (for consoles)
i think halo is a good game,i wouldnt say it was fantastic but it defintly is a really good game, a fantastic game is the half life series, ;) cant argue with that.gamerchris810
Half Life is my personnal fav ever. first time I played that I fell in love with FPS mroe than ever.
But Halo CE isnt far from that. Its up their in MY top 5 FPS of all time. It still made me go WOW WEeee when you crash landed on the planet and gazed round the beautifuyl skies. It didnt need a gun at that moment in time I just wanted to lay back listen to the waterfall and have a picnic or a smoke maybe a bottle of wine. And then just as I'm relaxing bloody grunts and elites and ghosts all raid in. And its a beauty of a start to a game... Just like HL's boring but amazing train ride and experiment disaster gone wrong... The games are classics...
Anybody who disagrees gets a red arse...
by console standards, halo was awesome - and console gamers just weren't into fps games, either it just wasn't their thing or they were too young to remember the great console fps games like doom, duke nukem, exhumed and goldeneye - so when halo came along, it just blew console gamers away - it was practically the birth of a genre
they hadn't played quake, or quake 2, or system shock 1 or 2, or half life - or any of the other awesome fps games that had already been out for years.. no, for the console gamers, this was it, here and now - halo was a masterpiece, a revolution - a revelation, fps is a whole new genre, and a damn good one
it's only natural that they'd be blown away by halo - i've played tons of halo and personally, i think the coop is great fun, but the rest is very mediocre by pc standards - by console standards, yeah, damn good game
and this is the thing - not all systems are judged by the same standards - when speaking of console games, halo isn't overrated at all - it's one of the best console games ever, it just doesn't weigh up when measured against the pc's fps library at all, because the standards are completely different
and the exact same thing will probably happen with halo wars and the rts genre, when measured against things like dawn of war, company of heroes, supreme commander, age of empires, total war - ad infinitum - halo wars will probably fall very short, but for console gamers - halo wars will be the rts... it's all about standards and appropriate measurement
halo = rated accurately on xbox, probably a little overrated on pc - but the two systems are miles apart and always have been, and there's no way the two games on the two systems could be measured in the same way, with the same standards
Yes it is, but the game is still a lot of fun.
ON multiplayer that is. The single player is just a little crappy at first.
I hope you guys are kidding.
The Halo series is amazing. Halo 2's online was and still is simply amazing. Halo 2 online play consumed those who played it. No other game has the same teamwork and communication in every game. Play any other game (BF series, Counter Strike) and it takes effort to find people to work with you as a team and that have mics to communicate with you. Halo is simply amazing that it takes no effort, to start a game get a team or automatch and begin to have fun. Online computer games require you to get vent, along with a mic, along with signing up on clan forums and then getting into your squad at the same time. It simply gets annoying to take that much effort to get a group effort to win a game. With the Halo serious want some team work find some good people from a few match made games and get playing.
xxxsigmaxxx
Yea right! Halo has all the 5 year olds that play that game and you can absolutely never find someone to play with you as a team. Most people just run around trying to kill everyone, hell they even have more gay TKers than any other game. The people that actually are serious about gamimg find the right hardware for a good PC and good PC games, that's where all the mature players are. any 10 year old can ask his parents for an xbox and halo and go be gay online.
I believe they deserve most of the praise they get, especially CE. I can see why people would think they're overrated but personally I definately think they're at least as good as for example SS2 and HL, although they never were as influential. I can still play CE again and again and every time be amazed by it.
They are over HYPED though, halo 2 was almost like the second coming of Jesus. NO game ever will be able to live up to that kind of hype
common couldn't they make anothe engine for halo 3, its almost the same as the second one...llakallaka
Does it really matter as long as the game looks good and plays amazing (which it most probably will)? I really couldn't care less about the tech behind a game as long as it doesn't interfere with my experience while playing it.
Personaly, i think the Halo series suck...and i mean BIGTIME! I wrote an EXCELLENT review about Halo that perfectly*:) nailed it.
Too bad that some sorry@$$ fanboys cannot coop with it.
...still reading?..............Okay, now pay attention, perhaps you...nv...
Now, why does Halo blow, or at least in my opinion?
Because its from Microsoft? Because the "Master Chief" (not be confused with The Master THIEF!) is nothing but some guy dressed in Xbox-green Motorcross-cycling suit and helmet? Totaly uninspired?Hmm maybe....
But wait, there is more:) When crap as this game one deserves such a
low score from me, then there must be something terribly wrong about it.
Its sucks so bad, i don't even know where to begin!
But il try:) One thing at a time (sigh): ok first the graphics, which are the game less weakest point. Technically the game doesn't looks bad, with thing like detailed textures, pixel shader for watereffects and shiny look on things going on. But the leveldesign, especially lets say level 3, is just plain boring. I mean, can you spell "Copy and Paste?" It al looks so similair, that i simply got lost just because of ctrl c -ctrl v corridor no##! Its awful, just awful! Whats also lame is that the framerate is inconsistent and choppy.
Okay, on the sound: the 2nd less lame point: the less bad news is that the music(and soundtrack) is acceptable. As for the sound effects, i don't know how a laser gun or an alien weapon sounds like, so no problem here too.
BTW, explosions sound nice...That said, the voiceacting is quite lame .
I mean, aliens(the covenant) who can talk gibberly english?
And then that women on your side whatshername, i dont know but i don't like her. I got nothing against women, but she annoys me. (Perhaps because she sounds like my mum:) Not cool...........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Prepare yourself for the worst part: THE GAMEPLAY!!! (deathmars melody on background)
Welcome to the WEAKEST link of ALL links in this lame .... game.
The GAMEPLAY is slow as an uphill going old Turtle. Master Chief, tss, more a Master Turtle, if you ask me. Story is utterly forgetable, the usual standard humans vs aliens stuff. The unfriendly kind, you know who want to blow up the earth etc etc. Did i mention the controls of the Warthog vehicles yet? OMG! The controls are so messed up, even after hours and hours you'd still dirve like you've been drinking. OMG, whatch out, it drunken Master Turtle behind the Wheel! YOu best better take a walk, i''d say! Walk like a Turtle..Jingle...
To close this review with a bright spot, Halo does have a good strong point: it doesn't take long to finish it!
Yep, thats right. Usually this is not good, but in this case it is. Really!
PS:
What about the Multiplayer?
The game has multplayer mode. But that blows too. A game this bad just plain sucks, and multiplayer can't do nothing about it.

This is quite possibly the worst review I have ever read in my life. And I am not even a big Halo fan...
Gaming was brought to the mainstream way before halo 1 came out. Think PS1 and the N64 onemic
I'm not arguing the significance of the PS1 and N64, but gaming still wasn't mainstream at that point. Back in those days plenty of people had a playstation or N64, but only a small minority had any more than 3-5 games for it. I remember being the only person I knew that actually spent any significant amount of time gaming. I would go to friends' houses and be shocked that they only had a couple games, and they had never played some of the greats, like Ocarina of Time. video games were just something to do on a rainy day at that point.
fast forward a few years, and everyone I talked to was shocked that I had never played Halo. All of my friends who had previously owned 3 or 4 crappy games were starting to buy more, and they were actually interested in quality. Hell, even the jocks were playing Halo and Madden, and calling themselves gamers.
I did exagerate for effect, but nowhere near as much as you think. I experienced the shift firsthand.

That might be for you, but most casual gamers still have only 3-5 games. If anything final fantasy VII, street fighter II, or zelda brought gaming to the mainstream.

first off, I never said that casual gamers were buying more games, I said that more people were becoming less casual when it comes to gaming. Casuals are still casuals. Second, Those are all great games, yes, but that doesn't mean that they brought gaming into the mainstream. Like I said, out of all of the people I knew back in the heyday of the N64, only a select few had ever played Zelda or FF VII. most of them still haven't. Everyone I know has played Halo, though.

you realy must of been dropped when you were little. you just compared HALO to OFP. you definately are not a PC gamer. You cant even put GR.OFP,and other real tactical shooters in the same category as HALO. halo plays exactly like quake 2 run jump shoot thats it. nothing revolutionary something thats been around on PC since the DOOM days. plays alot like original doom run to the rocket launcher grab it and blast away. Halo doesnt even deserve a 6.0 IMO. Its a tumbor on the face of gameing.its reached almost cult like status for nothing its worshiped everywere by 10-12 year olds as "BEST GAME EVER" when in realitiy is one of the most horrificly outdated games to ever be realeased it was outdated before it was realeased.
Im done ranting im going to go play more stalker.

It's a whole lot more likely that those games brought gaming to the mainstream when you consider how many consoles for the PS2/PS1/N64 sold in comparison to the xbox. There is no way halo ever could have brought gaming to the mainstream, even though gaming was pretty much in the mainstream before then anyway.
