Origin has some decent sales every now and then, actual customer support, livestreaming support, and better stability than Steam, I don't see how Steam having solid competition is a bad thing aside from Origin exclusive games which I think should be available for purchase on Steam even if they require Origin. Although there's this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYTQ2QGovds&hd=1&t=39s

EA will continue to apply pressure using Origin which will encourage Steam to apply its own pressure, making all digital distribution retailers work a little harder to give us the best service.

Yeah their sales actually enticed me to buy BF3 for $20 a few weeks back. Now I've got nothing agains EA specifically, but I really can't stand the aesthetic of Origin, and offering games exclusively on origin annoys the pants off of me. That said, I can totally understand EA's reasoning in doing so. It's just a little bothersome to have to install yet another program which runs in the background. Also, LOL @ that video

I've had nothing but bad experiences with Origin and EA. I hope they crash and burn to be honest.

As for whether or not it will ever be as successful, that depends on EA's willingness to adjust its abhorrent business practices.

I have bad news for you, EADM/Origin was and is already successful, however, I am personally disappointed by Origin, not because it doesn't work, it's quite excellent in fact and EA's infrastructure, mother of God, the download speed doesn't go under 14mb/s which is pretty much the maximum download speed I have on most websites, but I considered EADM perfect, it was just a download manager, you registered games on your account, downloaded whenever you wanted and that was that, now they are following Valve with their bloatware infested client, with lost of features nobody needs or asked for while leaving out features its community asked for years (features that even Origin has).

If you're talking about raw numbers, it won't, even if they added some 3rd party devs, Origin will always be mostly EA + they won't make sales every day all year.

Define successful. Ea could make origin a requirement for all their games and if their games sell well Origin will grow big. Will people like it and will it gain any type of community! Never unless Ea starts caring about customers.

I like the software itself (Origin), but they have this "1 dollars equals 1 euro/pound" attitude, and in my country they price their games in euros (Hey EA, Israel is in the Middle East in Asia), so their "deals" are worthless to me. The biggest advantage of Origin is that you can choose where to install each and every game, and that it isn't ugly as Steam.

I dont think so. Of course, a lot can happen in the coming years. I'll stick with Steam, because EA rubs me the wrong way, but the competition is good, and we gamers benefit from it.

I can't really see it being all too great, since they like to put an arbitrary tax on digital goods, which i feel deters me from using it over Steam.

Probably not as big but they are clearly growing and making it a good program. I don't think you'll have trouble playing games and avoiding Origin is that is your thing. Except for EA games which will use it.

With as much as people hate EA, they would have to bend over backwords to gain the loyalty of a audience they only care half about anyways, so no.

The only reason origin has got as many users as it have now is because of battlefield 3. No one is there for their sales or prices in their ingame stores.

Correction, that's the only reason "you" ever heard of Origin, millions used it before some average game was released.

No it wont ever be as popular as steam but competition is always a good thing. Monopolies are always a bad thing, even if the Monopoly is owned by Valve.

True. This past Autumn sale really represented how great it is for us gamers/customers when there's competition. Amazon, GMG, GetGamesGo, and even Origin with a few of their own sales (also advertised on GMG page too), really kicked up a notch. It was probably my most favorite sale.

Origin, eh.

I use it when I need to use it (like when I buy EA's first party games). It works, for the most part.

But no, it's not going to overtake Steam anytime soon - Steam just has too great mindshare out there.

Nope. Origin is horrendous. Only games I own on it are BF3, ME3 and SWTOR. I hate having multiple DD programs, especially if one is way worse. I will never purchase a non game on origin if its available on Steam, and I will only use Origin for the very few games that EA refuses to release on Steam.

Steam has not been the only serious player on the digital dristribution market for some time and as long as money can be made, companies will be sure they get a bite of the cake..

I don't know how much of the digital distribution sales goes through steam, but im pretty sure they don't even sit on half of the online game sales and im confident their market share will only diminish in the future, as more players enter the market..

Speaking about success, I guess it depends on how you define success, but some people prefer origin over steam allready, so I guess they would say Origin is not AS successfull as steam, but has surpassed steam allready.

If we are talking number of users, I think Origin will have about as many users as steam in the future, if they don't allready have.

What do I prefer? - Neither, I prefer retail :)

edit. messed up space -.-

I don't like EA but I do like how it looks nicer then steam, you can earn achivements offline, and EA did add a bunch of their games I already had on steam to my origin account plus the live costumer support is nice and quicker then Valves ticket system.

Hating on Origin is stupid. It provides some decent competition to Steam.

It's not terrible software and it has some good deals from time to time.

I certainly hope it doesn't get as successful as Steam, it's just a much weaker service hosted by a company I have no love for. Steam is just a better service in almost every regard, I will just continue to vote with my wallet in that direction until further notice.

Ironically enough Origin was a long time EA Downloader beta client. I remember when Origin went live, and I had the thing installed, so I could easily register keys to a digital account - and absolutely nothing changed with the client update. I thought I needed a new installer or something, boy I was wrong.

That's what Origin is, an "unneeded" update for the EADM client, to bring it up to "user requirements" AKA what Valve offers, with an added bonus of offering everything Steam is still lacking, like offline messages something more important than some new random games hub, etc, installing where you want (something that after a decade Steam started to offer, partially), the only thing really missing from both still is chat history.

The one single reason i will never use origin is that the games are more expensive than anywhere online or in shops and that is a complete joke considering they are the ACTUAL publisher of the games. £39.99 and £44.99 ($65-$73) for standard pc games? no thanks.

The cheapest i can buy sim city for is £44.99($73)....£64.99($104) for the DIGITAL deluxe edition????? F that

i just hate having different services for everything... i want my games in one spot. don't make me use your crappy service for games you make. make a good service and people will use it, making your games exclusive to your service just pisses me off and makes me not want to buy the games at all. also, uplay can **** off and die.

I have to agree. I only didn't buy as much this Autumn sale compared to other sales because I had the self-restriant to realize I still haven't had the time to play the games I bought at last years sales. :(

Never used it, but no, it won't. Steam's already a behemoth - I've never gone to Origin's store, even though I do want a few recent EA games, simply because it's not integrated to Steam. Not that I have anything in particular against it, it's just that there are plenty of games on Steam that I've yet to get before bothering with Origin :P.
