I've seen many reactions to the Steam announcement, and I'm curious about how it will affect how many people buy the game. This is a poll, so no discussion here about why you hate/love steam. Those are everywhere, just want to know how it will affect your decision to buy Civ 5.

I'd buy it even if it had Ubisoft DRM... and I HATE Ubisoft DRM. Civ V is just to much of an epic game to miss.

If it uses Steamworks for the online, I will be happy.

Steam isn't nearly as bad as people try ot make it out to be. There is a very small, yet vocal community of active Steam haters.

I don't like it, but I will.

Steam integration is about the least annoying of the DRM schemes that require an online activation, but I don't like any company having as much control over PC gaming, and particularly game distribution, as Valve is starting to get. I don't like online activations in the first place, but at least I can feel pretty confident that the Steam activation servers will be up for decades to come.

What would keep me from buying it is if they did something ludicrous like Ubisoft's "Online Services Platform" or they decided to tell me what other software I can and cannot have installed on the same Windows partition. I think retailers ought to be the ones raising hell about non-Valve games requiring Steam.

I don't understand this "steam hate" I think steam is a perfectly decent service. I haven't committed to buying Civ 5 yet because I haven't seen enough of it, I find the Civ games a bit slow paced sometimes. However the fact it is using steam is not a deterrent to me buying the game. I would much rather Civ 5 used steam than the god awful Games For Windows Live, if it used GFWL then that would deter me from buying it.

The use of Steam made the game go from 'must-buy' to just a maybe. Right now I'm trying to decide whether to pick up Civ4 Complete for $10 and just skip over Civ5 (I have played Civ3 since 2002 and was going to skip Civ4 entirely) in hopes that Civ6 will be vendor neutral. But on the other hand, I'm very intrigued by what they're doing with the combat and not having units be stackable. It could totally break the game, or just make it even more awesome. I'm not 100% anti-Steam, all the time. I have bought (oops- I should say 'subscribed,' right?) several games from them. But I don't want any one company to become dominant in terms of digital distribution. I want an open platform- not a closed one. And of all the digital distributors, Steam's DRM is the worst. If they could make it more like GFWL, where it launches with your game AND shuts down with your game, then a big complaint of mine is gone. But I don't like that they insist that the program is running while you play your game and keep it running after I'm done playing. Give me an auto-close feature (and for those who want to keep it running, allow them to do so).

What??? No, just not acceptable (to me at least). I actually found out that I enjoyed Civ 4 more then I thought I would, but I'm strictly a "Physical Copy" purchaser of games. I have bought a handful of digital copies, but in all honesty my younger brother has paid for just as many digital copies of games for me through Steam's gift option as I have for myself. I love having the physical case, DVD (or CD, depending on the game and how old it is) and the manuals and little extra things that might be put in the boxes (like how Max Payne came with a mouse pad....I miss those days). I'd purchase Civ 5 for a physical copy with all the doodads that would come with a physical copy, but I won't buy it through Steam.

Wow, I completely missed this. Does anyone have a link to this announcement? I don't have a Steam account, and I definitely don't want to create one just to play one single game. Especially since I'm not going to use any multiplayer parts at all... I just play the singleplayer campaign.

You can still do that you know...Steam has a fully functional offline mode. Basicly you just need to activate it online when installing it.

Actually, that's the one "bad" thing about Civilization games. They're usually so damn awesome that they hold pretty high values for quite a long time.

However, this will be the first Civ released after DD has matured, so maybe I'll be utterly wrong. Still, the game will easily be worth the full $50.

Apparently no one told you steam games have offline mode, and the ability to make hard copies of you're software to a disc. Besides, the EULA is no different in you're vendor copy then my digital distribution copy of a game. You're still just paying for the rights use the software, there is never any ownership. Nice troll though.

That's the thing... from what I hear (and saw on the Civ5 official forum) the retail copy will use Steam as DRM, so even if you buy the retail copy you still have to register, install, and run Steam to be able to play. I really hate the thought of having to sign up for yet another online service before I can play games. I had to get one for the PS3, they forced me to get one for the 360, then they forced me to carry that over to my PC, EA forced me to sign up on their store to get my extra Dragon Age content, and now Civilization 5 will force me to sign up for Steam, that I have never used and have no interest in. It's starting to be a bit ridiculous... not to mention impractical.

STEAM SUPPORTS OFFLINE MODE AND ALLOWS YOU TO MAKE HARD COPIES OF GAMES.

Seriously, sorry for the caps guys. But this needs to be put in big bold [explicit deleted] letters at the top of every forum post for PC discussion. To many people talk bad on steam when gamespot will rip you off on every last penny they can nickle and dime form your a$$ first chance they get. Dont even get me started on other major retailers.

I know it supports offline mode, that's not my point. My point is I don't want to be forced to sign up for Steam in order to play a game I bought at my local brick-and-mortar store. It has nothing to do with the quality of the online service shoved down my throat. It's about my choice in the matter being taken from me.

It will have a brand new hex-based combat system (only one unit per hex, no stacking).

Anyway, of course I'm buying it. I really can't think of anything that could possibly stop me from buying Civ V.

I buy from Steam, but I have to admit the "you have to be online to go into offline mode" is pretty dumb. I would never buy a new single player game from Steam. The only single player games I've bought from there have been because they are so cheap it would have been a hassle to get them anywhere else.

Why wouldn't you buy just because of Steam? And to Chili: You don't have a Steam account yet? No orange box yet or anythin? You should make it like your main game account in priority above GFWL etc. A lot of games use it. The way they've managed friends and achievements is great and its very easy to use. Its just an account. It won't take long to make, its free etc.

No, I don't have a Steam account because I have absolutely no need for one. That's why this bothers me. If I saw any other practical advantage to having one, I wouldn't mind being forced to create an account, but I'll probably never use it for anything other than Civ 5. I don't consider "the way they manage friends and achievements" a good reason to get one since I don't care for either of those.

I don't have a problem with buying through Steam, but I don't know if I will get Civ 5. I used to really enjoy the series, but after recently trying to get into Civ 4 found myself a bit overwhelmed at the level of complexity it now has.

I've now got 44 games on steam, which is the large majority of my PC gaming collection. So no, I won't have any issue buying Civ 5 because it uses Steam. I may or may not get it though depending on how much I like Civ IV (just bought the complete pack on Steam less than a minute ago). I love Alpha Centauri so if the Civ series is anything like that then I'll probably wind up getting addicted to Civ IV and buy Civ 5 on launch day.
