simple you dont get killed in fear because the ai plays weird, in mafia guns dont kill and cant hit crap you find your self frustrated and dead, eg meele combat in mafia is a total ridiculous joke that looks under mediocrity therefore it plays like balls, like a very low budget crappy game that the developers didnt even spent a while trying to make it more appropriate, eg in hitman 1 and 2 the enemy ai is moving very weird and shoots as fast as they cane, especially when they shoot you they look like dancing on the floor or something and you cant just pop their head cuz you miss either left or right, thats not aproperiate and they spend some time fixing it, simply in fear if you check the commentary in the directors cut edition, they checked alot of stuff, was it too hard, too easy, not real enough to real, not fun, too frustrating to move thru the levels? Was it broken? we fixed it, but in mafia gun play feels like FAIL especially the sniper rilfe doest kill at once eve if you shoot the chest or the throat, the enemies survive and its pretty frustrating an unreallistic or the fact that you cant move while get shoted... or simply beyond realism and being easy or hard a simple example would be:
shooting someone 6 times in close range running out of ammo while he is still alive and lose all your 100% health just because he shot you once with the tommy gun !!!! But i unloaded a pistol on him??? Thats not appropriate or the fact that your racing vehicle get ass beep in the race and if it rolls over it chops your head off and you die but the other drivers simply pop up to their original position... thats not appropriate..assassin creed has similar fails in combat maybe you will like its combat...
But the point is that there is zero frustration of fear and nothing in inappropriate, ok the levels could have been better but fear 2 will fix that problem Simply mafia designers thought, that if we can play it that well so will the public but they miss the fact that they master they game play mechanics while they were developing all that time, something that the players did not because its survival mission after mision with weapon jumping and you gonna need about 100 to learn how to play, something thats not available in mafia because its not gta, simply mission progression is not appropriate it should go more easy on you and a bit more tutorial or like fear or cod gta games, but mafia is more like starting a new game on the higher difficulty when you aware that its mechanics are weird and you never play it before like the designers did for ALL that time in development, simple amateur designers issue, but in fear they had a whole team to pay attention to the gameplay and final product plus testers in order to fix all these, same in left 4 dead, thats how you make the game appropriate.
