Just as the topic says, im sure some of us if not all of us have made a silly mistake once in their life with regards to computers and computer building, so lets hear them, mine was probably on my first build when i was hooking up the graphics card, i plugged in the power cable the wrong way and i was puzzled for so long, i wa close to sending it back because i thought it was faulty, then i just tried switching the pci-e cable around the right way and it worked :), i felt so stupid lol.

i tried installing a new cheap heatsink/fan on my old 4200+ but the thing was so cheap it won't hold so i threw it at the floor and it shattered... there goes my rma.

and then i broke the cpu pins while trying to lock it down... there goes my 4200+.

On my last build I finished everything and was ready to load up the OS. When the disc wouldn't read I got pissed thinking that I bought a faulty discdrive...but no, I simply forgot to plug in the SATA cord C:

I just bought a new motherboard and everything was set up. I pressed the power button and on she went. Then like 30 second later she'd shut off. First I thought I fried my motherboard. Then I thought my PSU wasn't strong enough. So for 2 days I tried to figure out what it was. Then I realized my cpu fan wasn't installed correctly...

I think mines worse than anyone. When i first got a modular powersupply, i put the cable in the power supply (molex/sata) in upside down and i fryed 2 hdds and 2 dvd drives....that was a costly mistake.

When coming back to PC gaming a bit back i didn't do quite as much research as i should have, as such i went AMD dual core & mobo instead of Intel dual core and mobo, quite a mistake IMO.

Hmm......i can't think of anything really, just fiddling around the PC and then when it doesn't turn on getting all scared, then i realize i forgot to flip back the PSU switch. On my cousins PC i broke part of the socket retention clip thingy, but the heatsink still managed to stay on

Couple of years ago I was building a computer for a friend of mine. I decided to put the optical drives in first and work my way down to the bottom of the case so that the wires would be easier to access. After a couple of minutes I realized that it wasn't working out and decided to remove the molex cables from the DVD drive. I pulled lightly but it wouldn't budge. So I decided to pull it a little more and it finally came loose but not without a price. My hand struck the CPU heat sink and cut open my hand. The cut I could live with but the blood that dripped onto the MB was something I could live without. I cleaned it up to the best I could but it seems that there was still some on it when I did the first boot and it shorted the board.... Another time I ended up spending an hour trying to figure out why a system couldn't boot. (Thought the power button had a disconnected wire but the old tried and true screw driver test never worked either) Eventually I started going through the cables again and finally noticed my mistake. The power supply came with two 4 pin CPU cables and I connected the one with the number 2 on it instead of 1. I felt like an idiot for wasting so much time on it but in the end I just laughed.

You dont have to force it with this psu, itll go right in and you wont know its in wrong until you turn it on.....or if you know that it clicks when they go in.

Fyi im talking about this part:

Oh i thought it was the molex going into the dvd drive or something :? Yah with those you have to match the notches on the top...

On my very first build a few years ago, I used an off-brand (ECS) motherboard with very little support and a terrible manual that was a real pain to connect my case to; they stopped providing BIOS updates for it after 2006, so it did not support even the first-generation Core Duo after the Pentium D. On that same build, I used a cheap power supply by RaidMax that ended up dying on me after a little more than a year. On my second attempt, which was for another person, I did what I would consider my best job on it in terms of selecting hardware at good prices. On my current computer, I mistakenly bought a 3870x2 which really never performed up to the level I had hoped it would. I have recently replaced it with a gtx 260, but I still feel like I could have saved myself at least $150 by just getting a decent 8800 at the time. I also didn't do enough research on cpu coolers; this one is practically silent, but I cannot overclock my q6600 past 2.92ghz without approaching high temperatures; I'll definitely look at Zalman next time.

Years ago I built a Duron system... I just had the heatsink/fan sitting on top of the CPU unattached. i forget this and turned it on. And with no heat spreader on AMD cpus, turning one on without a heatsink will damage it just turning it on... Fortunetly newegg or whoever, took it back, lol. Thats the only time ive ever ruined something due to pure stupidity I can remember....

I just built a new computer, I was getting random BSOD on boot up sometimes. Couldn't figure it out for the life of me. After 2 days a new DVD burner and brand new hard drive. I finally was set on that it was one faulty memory module :(. On the 3rd day of my new computer I took the one stick I still had in my system and moved it to the first expansion slot. I was back to the whole BSOD! Found it wasn't my memory at all as I used both stick of ram in slots 2 and 4, it was a faulty expansion slot 1 on my Mobo! Go figure!

hmm, took me a sec to remember the mobo needed a psu plug of its own, but i figured it out..

so many things change every generation, since 486's to now, sometimes takes a sec to adjust when building your next rig

My 1st system build (listed in sig below).......When I went to install my cpu in the mobo socket, I had a really hard time pulling the latching arm over to lock it in place. Then when I went to install the Zalman heat-sink, I was bending the board so badly while attempting to screw in down, I thought I was going to break it. I knew something was wrong, so I disassembled everything to check if I had lined up the pins of the cpu with the socket correctly. Everything looked good and I kept eyeing the cpu to see if it was ok. I then turned it over and realized that I forgot to remove the plastic cover on the back that cover the pins.......I wanted to shoot myself !!! .....I thought I had damaged the chip and MB, but as it turned out.....all was fine.....I guess that says a lot for Intel and Gigabyte (Built rock solid).......

A long time ago I found that forcing a AGP card into an PCIe slot wasn't a good idea , recently I found that with certain video card on certain mother boards you can't release the ram clips and forcing a stick of ram out of it's slot isn't a good idea .

Back in 1998, I built one of my then gaming rigs with a Celeron 300a (Mendocino Core). Overclocking cpu's was just really starting to gain popularity at that time. Well after getting the cpu mounted on my Abit BX6 mobo, it was time to install the ram. I was doing this in very poor lighting. Somehow I managed to halfass insert one of the ram sticks in backwards altho it didnt seem to fit all the way. I thought it was just the "new"ness of the mobo and kinda jammed it in there. I knew it wasnt supposed to be like that but I figured if it didnt work, i'll adjust it. --- I booted up, got a bunch of beeping tones, and then a brief flash and finally the smell of smoke. Lucky for me it only harmed the one ram stick. The slot still was functional after replacing the ram. BTW, that cpu/mobo/ram still works to this day as a kiddie system for my children to play/surf on

When I finished my upgrade from my older X2 5200 and ASUS motherboard to a E8400 and Gigabyte EP35 motherboard, I was ready to turn the system on.

So I do so, and wondered why the system wasn't actually booting up. The fans were on, everything was running. I try a second time, same thing.

I look inside my case, checking all of the power cables. Turns out the processor's power cable wasn't plugged into the motherboard. Took me probably 5 minutes to figure that out.

i used slightly wrong screws to fix the motherboard to the brass spacers, so i needed to clamp the gold spacers underneath to mothorboard to unscrew it again

i used my HDD rack wrong i didnt screw from the underneath but the sides like you do with DVD drives, and i wondered why it wouldnt work, so i used blu-tac for a few months.

everything else went fine, booted first time etc etc, no connections were wrong, and considering that was my first build i was happy.
