I just built a new system for vista, the prob is I got 4gb of ram and well vista dosnt seem to like it during install it would keep on crashing, I took out 2 gbs and it worked fine, I put the 2 gb back in and vista only sees 2.5gb. I know that vista can take 4gb. So is this a prob with my mobo, ram or vista Mobo - evga Nforce 680i Sli RAM - Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2 Dominator, PC8500 Vista - ultimate 32bit when i run system analysis sofware like cpu-z or belarc they both see the 4gb of ram can any one help!

Well, I just think its a vista bug. You should see if a game can tell that the 4 gb are there.

Do you have 32 bit? If so, you cannot run, all 4 gigs, You need 64 bit, Windows locks at 2.75 gigs of ram.

Might be a bad chip, you could swap them out and put them in different slots to see if that helps, but since the software sees it then I'm not 100% sure on the issue, you could run Memtest and see if it finds a bad chip.

Yep, either upgrade to 64-bit or live with the less-than-expected RAM. Though I wouldn't expect any big slowdowns or anything, since even 2GB is perfectly fine, 4GB is pretty much overkill.

i think it has something to do with the fact that 1gb is actually 1024mb. 1024*4= 4096 = technically over 4gb

Uh, no. Bytes go by systems of 2. 4096 = 4*1024, which is the standard size of a gigabyte. Only hard drive manufacturers go by "1000 megabytes = 1 gigabyte" for some reason. Also take into account that no matter what you're getting, it's almost never exact.

Vista 32 bit (as well as XP 32 bit) can only address 4GB of memory TOTAL. This should not be confused with the 4GB of system RAM in your motherboard. Total memory includes memory on other devices as well, such as your video card, sound card, PCI bus and other system resources. These resources are REQUIRED for the OS to function, so they take priority. However, if you add the 4GB of RAM on your motherboard to this memory, you end up with MORE than 4GB total, so the OS "ignores" some of your motherboard's RAM to be able to use the other devices' memory and stay under the 4GB limit.

This memory limitation is inherent to all 32 bit OSes. A 64 bit OS, on the other hand, can support up to 16 exabytes (17,184 gigabytes) of RAM. This, of course, is a theoretical limit. Microsoft has chosen to limit the maximum amount of memory its 64 bit versions of VIsta can support. Home Basic 64 can support up to 8GB. Home Premium 64 bit up to 16GB. Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate 64 bit can support up to 128GB of memory. These limitations appear to be arbitrary and more to do with marketing than technology.
