You do have it set to PCM right?
Also try turning the center speakers db level up some, since that is the speaker that outputs the dialogue.
Oh and what Onkyo receiver do you have?
If it is a newer model have you done the Audysey sound set-up?
Yes that is what the Audysey sound set-up is. Can the optical even output the hi-def audio in PCM? or does it just pass standard Dolby and DTS in PCM? I know optical can't do 7.1 because of bandwidth issues not sure if it has same problems with HD audio.
Honestly if you are looking to upgrade receiver anytime soon get a tx-sr605 or 705, since both of these models has 1080p HDMI pass-through. I dont seem to have the dialogue issue when running audio through HDMI.
Did bumping up the center speaker seem to help any?
Well I have my PS3 connected with an Optical cable to the reciever and after reading some stuff on forums, it seems that people can't decided wether Optical is better with PCM or Bitstream but Yes I am running it on PCM. Turning up the Center Speaker seems good enough advice I guess and My Onkyo Receiver does have Audysey option and its on and if you are refering to Calebrating the sound with the mic then yes I have done that as well, is that what the Audysey Sound set up is? You need to always select bitstream when using optical. There is no situation where selecting PCM using optical is actually a good idea. You only get 2 channels if you select PCM. That may be your problem.
Optical has the following limitations:
I would advise you to upgrade to a receiver capable of processing HDMI audio if you want to listen to HD audio in a 5.1/7.1 setup.
Well firstly I read on a forum somewhere that Optical running on BITSTREAM gives you only 2 Channels but i guess they are wrong, its the other way around. Using PCM on Optical gives you 2 channels. BTW I just checked the back of the reciever and it does have 3 HDMI outputs, but since I already have one HDMI port of the PS3 running to my HDTV, should I put the HDMI from the reciever to the HDTV directly? will that work or give me lesser quality in some other way. Thanks for you respones, much appreciated.
PS: And if i go and buy a HDMI, run it through to my TV, then it should be set to PCM right?
Here's the problem. With a receiver that can process HDMI audio, you can do the following:
PS3 --HDMI cable --> Receiver --HDMI cable --> TV
However, your receiver (SR506) cannot process HDMI audio so you are stuck with either:
PS3 --HDMI cable --> Receiver -->HDMI cable --> TV
PS3 --optical cable --> Receiver
OR
PS3 --HDMI cable --> TV
PS3 --optical cable --> Receiver
Hey I0053 man you're right on about the options you gave me and though I am current running it asHere's the problem. With a receiver that can process HDMI audio, you can do the following:

I was wondering if running it with HDMI would make a difference because everyone says I need HDMI cable to get the true HD sounds. But if I dont get that sound then buying a HDMI cable would be a waste right? or will running it like your first option will make a difference? u know with the HDMI and the optical cable, cuz the manual says I gotta use both wires. Thanks

For the PS3, HDMI is the only way to get HD audio (7.1 PCM, Dolby trueHD, DTS HD MA), as for stand alone players, you do have the option of using multichannel analog cables (that is 8 separate RCA cables) to get HD audio, but you have to make sure the player can decode Dolby trueHD and DTS HD MA (All players can decode PCM). I wished sony could sell a Multichannel AV cord (A 7.1 cable that can also work with 5.1), I would rather pay $30 for it to listen to PCM 5.1, rather than paying $500 for an AV receiver, even for 7.1.
