Alright, and do i have to take off the old paste thats on the CPU right now? and if so how do i do that?cole_793
Use some high purity alchohol to remove old paste.

Hmmm, I've just tried the OCCT stress test on my computer... at the moment I'm idling at around 36-40... on hot days it usually is around 39-42.
After 10 minutes... my temperatures in CPUID is reporting Cores 2 and 3 to be around 70, the others around 68-69. TMPIN0 is about 65.
Now... I'm a bit inclined to think these readings could be a bit wrong... because the minute I stopped the test... the temperatures jumped in a SECOND down to 50 degrees... surely the CPU couldn't lose 20 degrees or so that fast!
I've been playing CoD4 everything high... for about an hour or so on end and it's been fine.
Anything to really worry about?
(Stock cooler... and Arctic Silver 5 paste... installed by myself). THinking of getting a aftermarket cooler though (and eventually maybe overclocking).
That's what the heatsink is supposed to do, get the heat away quick. Once the CPU quits pumping out the heat it drops drastically fast.
I put a Q6600 (B3) in my dads PC. Under Prime 95 full load it gets upto 70c-72c on the cores. It runs perfectly stable there, and never gets anywhere close to that under normal working conditions. We just used the stock HSF, now I did clean off the pre-applied paste and put some AS5 on there.
I think it will be OK (and mine haha!).
As you've said and from my own experience... there has been no problems experienced so far... and its unlikely you'll be stressing out your CPU at 98% all the time for hours on end.
If it does "melt" or get too hot... well then it's going straight back to the company... the heatsink IS on correctly, paste correct... so I'll just say it's faulty.
Mind you so far... I think there's not much to worry about!
Edit: Idling now about 35 degrees C... so think it's fine.
so do you think my comp will be ok running in the high 60's for extended periods of time? I'm using a Q6600 also btw. cole_793
Honestly, yes it should be. Now I am anal about temps, so I would not like seeing my core temps get that high. But it really should be just fine.
But did I read correctly earlier that you have re-seated you HSF and did not clean the paste and put some fresh thermalpaste on? If thats the case, I would at very least try and get some paste.
yeah, i had to take it off and put it back on like 4 times when i was first building it. the only reason i havent gotten any paste yet is because the shipping for them is $7 on newegg, even for the $2 tubes.cole_793
Yeah, that sucks, LOL
You have any PC shops close by, or a Radio Shack? I even think I saw some in Best Buy the last time I was there.
oh cool, radioshack has arctic silver 5 on there site so hopefully it will be in-store. thanks for the advice. cole_793
Arctic silver is great, but the stuff on the freezer pro 7 is still good. But in the mean time you cpu will be fine! They are designed to go into pc's like yours. Do you think that the general consumer who buys a pc from a pc shop has case fans and a special heatsink fan? No they dont and their pc's last years. So dont worry at all, long before you damage the cpu it would start rebooting your system.

[QUOTE="cole_793"]yeah, thats what im going to have to do i guess. Anyone habe any suggestions? Ive heard alot of good things about the freezer 7 proNamelessPlayerI'd also look into the Sunbeamtech Core Contact Freezer. It's received many favorable reviews, though it doesn't seem to be all that popular yet. It's a bit more expensive than a Freezer 7 Pro, but definitely cheaper than a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme with a 120mm fan. (35 US$ on Xoxide is the cheapest price I've seen for it.) The Core Contact Freezer comes with the heatsink, mounting bracket for LGA775 systems, a 120mm fan, a fan controller meant to go in one of your unused expansion slots, and Tuniq TX-2 thermal compound, which is generally said to be superior to Arctic Silver 5 performance-wise and also isn't electrically conductive. All in all, you're getting a lot for your money. However, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend it yet. Why? FedEx hasn't delivered mine yet!
I would too.
