Im thinking of getting a new CPU for my pc a Phenom II X4 3.0Ghz, although I have installed just about everything else in a pc before iv never actaully had to change a CPU except a very old one years ago so i dont have much experience at it. My question first is if anyone can direct me to a nice online guide to installing a AM2+ processor or such whether it be text or video form. Second is a question about thermal paste. I heard retail CPUs come pre pasted with the thermal paste. So lets say i order one from newegg.com would it come with paste on it already? thanks

Don't know of a guide, but if you buy a retail packaged Phenom II the cooler should come with preapplied paste or come with the paste you need.

k cool so its normal for a packaged CPU to come with paste on the heatsink? and if it has paste on the heatsink you dont need to add a layer on the CPU itself do you, or does that come pasted too?

It usually comes with it already on the heatsink, you won't need to apply another layer. That or they give you small tube of it to apply yourself (remember, just a thin layer, you won't use all of it.)

well I haven't installed a cpu before but i will soon, the main thing to do is just take the motherboard out and lay it flat on a soft surface. The reason behind taking it out is so that you don't risk cracking it. The other thing to make sure that you do is to make sure that you're grounded so that you don't fry any of the chips on the motherboard or the cpu with your static electricity.

no need to waste time and efford taking out the motherboard. you just need to pull up the leaver on the heatsink, unclip it from the mounts, lift it off, depending on the thermal compound wipe it off, then lift up the cpu leaver and the cpu should easily come out. they you put the new one in making sure it is positioned in the right way (it will only fit one way don't force it in) push the leaver down and if the heatsink has preapplied thermal paste simply place the heatsink on top and clip it on.
