im a relatively new PC gamer (just got a new one after suffering years with a piece of crap). I've just been playing half life 1 and TFC, but i will soon be buying Battlefield 2.

My question is, what patches should i donwload? i know they're necassary, but i  dont know which ones to download. Do I just download a crap load, or is there one "mega" patch, that covers everything?

.........i feel like such a n00b right now...

Generally the latest patch for each game has all the fixes in it. But you should check each game individually (on their website) for patching instructions.

BF2 newest patch is version 1.41, there is only one version of this patch and it will patch any version to the latest version. It's quite large because it includes a few new maps. http://www.gamershell.com/download_16477.shtml Don't feel like a noob, it's a common question

I was wandering, Once you happen to download a patch for any particular game, Which folder do you place the patch into???... Would it be the SYSTEM folder????...

The latest patch is what your looking for. That one usually fixes all the problems from version 1.0 So if you see 1.12 and 1.13 get 1.13/ However sometimes there would be a note saying something along the lines of * need V 1.1, or install on top V1.1* so you need to download and install V1.1 first before the others. This doesn't happen often but when it does it can be a pain to make sure everything is ok. Also if you see patch V1.14b (the b means beta) it means the patch hasn't either been 100% tested or optimized, so it's up to you to take that risk or not and download the 1.13. Then there are unofficial patches, these aren't made by the developers but by pc gaming community of fine programmers. About 99.9% of the time they are great, and if there is a problem with it there will be notes attached in a read me or where you download it from. Please note all of these things I just mentioned I learned by myself through trial and error and reading readme files and such. So I welcome anyone who points out a mistake I made or can share their experience with us on the forum.

Most patches are executable, you run them, it detects the game's location and you click next and it will do all the work for you. Some "hotfix" patches or temporary fixes will maybe require more though. They usually come with a Readme.txt and tell you were to put them.

Look for the highest version number, as you always want the latest patch.  Also, patches on GameSpot (and a few other places) have specific naming conventions--if it is listed as an incremental patch, it updates from a specified previous version of the game; if it is just referred to as a patch, then it will work on any previous version.
