Assuming your receiver can process HDMI audio:
Cable box -- HDMI --> receiver -- HDMI --> TV
In this configuration, your receiver will process the audio from the cable box and send the video to the TV.

Does your HDTV have an optical output? Mine does and I get audio from PC, xbox, dvd player and cable from the optical output from my HDTV.Varese_basic

My diagram only utilizes 1 HDMI input. The connection from receiver to TV utilizes the HDMI OUTPUT.
I think it would be easier if you listed the exact make and model of your receiver and TV. It would then be a trivial matter for us to recommend the optimal settings.
