I have a Panasonic HDTV with 3 hdmi inputs, a receiver with an hdmi input, and the cable box has one hdmi input. Can someone help me figure out how to configure it so I can have the speakers work through the cable boc and the receiver?

Assuming your receiver can process HDMI audio:

Cable box -- HDMI --> receiver -- HDMI --> TV

In this configuration, your receiver will process the audio from the cable box and send the video to the TV.

Does your HDTV have an optical output? Mine does and I get audio from PC, xbox, dvd player and cable from the optical output from my HDTV.

It has one, but how would I hook the receiver and the cable box up to where they would both have surround sound?

Connect your cable box to your hdtv using HDMI. Now use your TV's optical output for your receiver. Go into your audio menu on your TV and you probably will see digital output RAW or PCM. I would select PCM. You are using your TV's optical output for surround. edit" What are you doing? You want to stream music and no TV? If so I would like to know that.

You let the reciever handle everything audio and video. That's what they are made for to be the brains of the home theater.

My diagram only utilizes 1 HDMI input. The connection from receiver to TV utilizes the HDMI OUTPUT.

I think it would be easier if you listed the exact make and model of your receiver and TV. It would then be a trivial matter for us to recommend the optimal settings.
