I may have made a post about this before but I don't really remember, so if it seems familiar, sorry. Anyway, my PC has developed a problem where I can be doing just about anything at all and it just shuts off abruptly and restarts iself. I don't mean like Microsofts update restarts, I mean the screen just goes blank and after a few seconds I get the regular stat-up screens. Any ideas on what the culprit might be?

probably overheating... check your temps and also run a virus/spyware scan to make sure.

Like greatmax1 said, i think this is probably down to overheating.

Alternatively it could be a problem with the PSU. Or the PSU isn't powerful enough to run everthing in the PC. (someone feel free to correct me on this if i'm wrong).

it would help if you guys could post your specs, PSU specifications, temps for your cpu, gpu and overall system, then we can help determine what the problem is.

alright, now you need to figure out your temps for cpu and gpu. Download everest and tell us what are your idle temperatures and the temps you get under load (while playing a game i.e.).

I'll check that when I go back up (I'm down on the Mac right now) the only reason I don't think it's overheating is because the air blowing is really pretty cool and it doesnt usually happen under load or anything specific like that, it can be right after I sit down at it or in the middle of a game.

One thing you should try is right-click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced Tab -> On startup and Recovery area there is settings button, click it and remove tick from "Automatic Restart". After this if the comp still restarts then it's either heats or PSU, but if you get a blue screen then it may be something else. If you do get bluescreen, write down what it says and post it here.

alright then its most likely a psu problem, do you remember what psu you have, wattage and the number of amps on the +12V rails? Also, how long have you been using this computer and when did you start having problems with it?

Run a memory test. I currently have problems with my PC, and it's due to bad memory. Check out Memtest and download the software.

It's an Allio/Allied (can't tell what it says) PSU, 500W and 20A on the 12v rail. If I remember correctly I think it was a pretty cheap PSU. The computer is fairly old but it has been upgraded and changed quite a bit ( I think the only original pieces left are the HDD and the RAM). As for how long this has been happening I'm not really sure, maybe a year?

I think you have plenty of power for your system, unless you have a huge amount of expansion cards. I'd agree that it's either a faulty PSU or faulty RAM.

Yeah, I was thinking that should be plenty of power, the only expansions are the X700Pro and a firewire card I think. Any way of finding out if it is the RAM or not? It could use a RAM upgrade anyway.
