My girlfriends computer has been rebooting for afew months now when she is playing games. Im wondering if anyone here would have some ideas on what could be causing it, or even if anyone knows of any programs I could stick on her computer to log whats going on when it reboots.

I only Recently bought her a new PSU because her old one stopped working, so Im pretty sure it cant be the PSU.

PC specs...

CPU: AMD PII 945

GPU: HD4870

RAM: 4GB ddr3

PSU: Thermaltake litepower 600W

Easiest thing to test first is RAM, then do a defrag etc etc

Mine does this, its because its overheating.

Your's may be doing it for a different reason, but mine does it cuase it overheats.

I find having a fan blowing on it during gaming helps it... I've been meaning to get it fixed but... meh.

Are there any programs I can use to log tempratures so I can check what they were when it reboots?

I also forgot to mention that once the computer has rebooted it doesnt do it again for along time. Im not sure a defrage will do anything, as I formated her entire computer and did a whole new install of windows. I thought I might have been a driver issue, but seeing as it is still happening since then Im guessing its not. I'll check out the tempratures she's getting, if anyone could point me to a program to monitor them.

MSI Afterburner will allow you to monitor framerate, gpu temp, gpu usage, vram usage, clocks while in game. You can also take screenshots and record video as well.

Nope. Some other programs for temps are: HWMonitor (everything) and CoreTemp (CPU).

The first thing should be to open the case and see that every fan is moving like it should and that air is actually transported where it should.

As others have said it's probably overheating. You should give it a clean anyway.

ok, so since monitoring the temps iv descovered something odd. Every crash that has happened the gpu temp have been exactly 76C. I really dont know if it has anything to do with temps anymore though as the card gets up too around 100 on occasion and does not crash. I have no idea what could be causing this now. Is is possible that her gpu just doesnt like that specific temprature, but then if its crashing because of that they why not when its running at higher temps? Anyone have any other ideas on what could be going on?

If it's rebooting it's more likely to be CPU than GPU. What temps does the CPU hit at load?

I use hwmonitor since it keeps track of the max temps each component hits.

You could try a program like prime95 to max out the cpu for like 15 mins, that will heat it up more than any game ever will, and if your pc crashes you'll know it was the cpu overheating.

ok, so I let prime95 run for around an hour and the temp got to a max of 62C, and no crash happened. This is becomming a very difficult thing too figure out. The only thing i can think of now is the psu, but its only 2 months old. So im pretty sure it cant be that... No other idea's on what I could check?

Furmark would be worth a go. If you're desperate maybe memtest to check ram, but from my experience prime95 on blend will crash if there's a ram issue.

Normally overheating would cause the system to shutdown, rather than reboot. I think there is a slight problem with RAM. Download Memtest, burn the ISO onto a disk and then boot from CD when you boot up the system.

Im gonna be laughing so hard if its a RAM issue, cos thats what I suggested in the 1st 3 posts and people jumped to overheating issues.

He should test his RAM for sure since it's easy to do but I doubt it's the problem since the pc is stable when not playing games. It's more likely to be a overheating or driver issue.

I'd also suggest to check the event viewer right after a reboot to see if there are any programs/applications/drivers that are throwing out warrnings or errors the time the computer reboots.

So i checked the ram using memtest and no errors cames up. Tried out furmark and the card got to a maximum of 91C after an hour, and the pc never rebooted during that time. So I no longer think its a heating issue, which really just leaves drivers or power. So next time it reboots I'll check the event viewer and check if anything looks out of place.

Strange, it certainly sounded like ram or overheating.
