Recognizing an iPod Touch

Is anyone using their iPod without iTunes?

My wife got a free iPod Touch from her father, but I have issues with Apple. I'm happy to let her use the iPod, but I don't want to install iTunes if I can avoid it. It seems like iTunes is required, however, just to recognize the device, let alone use it.

Any thoughts?

Would you recommend the correct forum, please? My understanding was that this was PC Hardware. I am trying to connect an iPod Touch to my PC using Windows 7. If there is a more appropriate forum, I'm happy to repost.

There are a few plug-ins for Windows Media Player to allow syncing with an iPod. Though it may require not having the latest version of iOS.
