Okay... I am a girl who is newish to gaming but have really enjoyed most of the things I've played. I'm almost done with my current choice and am looking toward my next game. I'm hoping you can help me find a really good one. Here are the games I've played and my overly simplistic reactions to them. I like the idea of cooperative gaming online, but really don't want an MMO and since I don't really know any gamers it would have to be something open/welcoming to newbies/outsiders. Online is definitely not a requirement, though. Can you think of a game I'd probably like? Syberia I & II - Loved the first one, liked the second; enjoyed the story and several of the puzzle arcs; beautiful graphics and good music Black & White - interesting concept; enjoyable game; got bogged down at one point in the game and never finished it Oblivion - Liked it; good story; I was a bit overwhelmed by the massive number of options I had at any given time, so perhaps a little too open for me?; I was a little frustrated by the monster leveling system, but I understand the rational for it; enjoyable game Diablo II - Liked it; I wish it had more of a story and it seemed a little grindy to me; small inventory space was incredibly frustrating Dungeon Siege - Liked it; it had too little player involvement though, click to tell the party where to go, wait for them to walk there and attack whatever they find on the way; also, a little too linear Freelancer - Liked it quite a bit; liked the story and the ability to take side missions without feeling too overwhelmed by the options; liked the ability to trade as well; enjoyed the story; really liked the space flight aspect; wish there were a sequel DarkStar One - Liked it; liked the story; there were things that frustrated me about this game, but I can't remember what; but I do wish there were a sequel Final Fantasy XII (I know, not PC) - I liked this game; at times it was a bit repetitive; I liked the story arc as well as the side quests, but I'm not generally a huge fan of the turn-based fighting (if other aspects of the game are good enough I will gladly accept it though) Dungeon Runner - enjoyed; liked the satire; quit when I got into the 80s and it became too much of a grind Civ IV - Loved it the first time through; wanted to replay it, but found it much less enjoyable the second time around Fable - Liked it; seemed a little short; liked that my choices affected things Longest Journey - Currently playing; I like it, but it seems like I spend a whole lot of time talking to people; the story is interesting and I will soon be finished Myst - Found this frustrating with a whole lot of retracing footsteps; most of the puzzles were logical and intuitive, but many of them were still frustrating; I did like the story, though Baldur's Gate - I tried this and wanted to like it... I just couldn't get a handle on the party-based system; I've set it aside to try again once I get better at this gaming thing Deux Ex - makes me dizzy when I try to play it for some reason, tried Half Life as well with the same effect, wonder if it's just me, but at least for now first person perspective is out

if you liked Oblivion, you might like to try Morrowind, which is the game before it in the series. it's nowhere near as pretty as Oblivion and it can be a bit overwhelming at first, but most people here prefer it. I'm on the fence really, but one thing it definitely has over Oblivion is that the monsters don't level up with you. everyone seems to agree that the levelling system was the weakest part of Oblivion.

also, if you liked Final Fantasy XII, give the other Final Fantasy games a go. on the PC, you've got 7 and 8 to choose from. it's all turn-based combat, but there's so much story and sidequest content so you might still enjoy them.

it's a shame some first-person games make you dizzy. you'll be missing out on a very strong genre for PC gaming.

Other games that you may want to try are Psychonauts, Beyond Good & Evil, and Dreamfall. Dreamfall is the sequel to The Longest Journey. Those three are pretty good. None of those have any sort of online co-op though.

Hi Lyrianna.

If you liked Black & White then you might be interested in Darwinia and Dungeon Keeper 2.

I'm not particularly a fan of role-playing games but you can't go wrong with Knights of the Old Republic.

You're not really that new to gaming though since you know what you like and what you want. I can't help you with online games though.

Let's combine a couple (okay, 3) of the games you enjoyed (Civilization 4 and Freelancer/DarkStar One) and recommend Galactic Civilization 2: Ultimate Edition. It's basically Civilization 4 in space...and with a single-player campaign. Well, technically, the entire game is single-player (since there is no multiplayer component to it)...but the campaign is at least a campaign and not just a skirmish (which is in the game as well).

If you would prefer something just a tiny bit more fast paced (and I do mean 'tiny' bit), there's Sins of a Solar Empire. Sins is definitely a multiplayer-centric game, as evidenced by a lack of a single player campaign.

And to increase the pace even more (and have a single-player story that is actually well written and engaging...not to mention told via cutscenes that are incredible artistically), there's Homeworld and Homeworld 2.

Looking at the list of games you played and enjoyed, here's my suggestion: Neverwinter Nights; you really should get this game. This is the game that made me an RPG gamer and it's neither too baffling like Oblivion, nor too old like Dibalo or Baldur's Gate. The expansions aren't that great, but the original game still rocks. You should also try Dungeon Siege 2, it's a pretty decent game. I am currently playing "Vampires Masquerade Bloodlines". It's an RPG like Oblivion, and if you're in to vampires, you will like it. If you liked longest journey, you will like Broken Sword games. They are pretty good, but still you need to talk a lot. These adventure games are mostly about talking and getting clues.

Great suggestions... off to Amazon and Ebay to find some new games. Neverwinter Nights looks great, by the way, so thanks especially for that suggestion.

If you're liking adventure games you could try the Sam and Max series of episodic games from Telltale games, as long as you like general wierdness and randomness. Or if you aren't overly bothered about graphics look up some of the older adventure games (Day of the tentacle, Sam and Max hit the road, Monkey Island, Beneath a steel sky) since you can find most of those cheap or free from various places.

If you want (what I would consider) an easier entry to the Baldurs Gate style of RPG then Planescape Torment might work. I personally found it easier to get to grips with, though that may just be because I found the story to be deeper.

Other than that all of the suggestions here are solid. In general just go with your gut and never forget you can trade these things back in:P.

given by what you thought about oblivion, which is what i thought i think the games you will like the most are very structured rpgs with a planned out and very good story for you to enjoy

knights of the old republic -classic, best game ever

witcher- amazing rpg, really good story

mass effect- another excellent rpg

bioshock- good story as well, a little short though

neverwinter nights 2- another very good one

i highly reccomend you try some rpgs with a really good story- much more enjoyable than sandbox rpgs like oblivion

More games to look up, thanks. I realize now how common threads like this must be, so I really appreciate the suggestions. Witcher looks interesting. I wanted to try some old school adventure games, but I run 64-bit Vista and have an incredibly difficult time installing and running older games, even with compatibility mode. Also, what is a sandbox rpg?

Also, what is a sandbox rpg?lyrianna

a sandbox game is one which gives you a large degree of freedom to play the game as you please, often letting you choose whether you want to take part in the main objectives of the game, or simply ignore it and enjoy exploring a open world doing what you like. Oblivion and Grand Theft Auto are both sandbox games.

I downloaded some demos and I think I've discovered that I don't particularly care for strategy type games. Controlling armies or hordes of people just isn't really my thing. Civ IV must have been some kind of fluke. And I've never understood the appeal of The Sims. I know, they're incredibly popular, but not what I want from a game.

However, Divine Divinity is great and NWN also seems like I'll enjoy it a lot.

Also, I own Commander Keen and I really enjoyed it back in the day, but like many old games, it's hard to go back. The nostalgia is great, but being spoiled by newer games somehow lessens the experience. I went back and tried out Space Quest again, and was sadly disappointed. I have such fond memories of those games.

Does anyone still play Dungeon Siege 2 online?
