Dear gamer community,

I am currently working on an essay about computer games. It generally deals with the difference that pc-enthusiasst perceive computer games, as opposed to non-gamers.

If you could be so kind to takepart of this short survey of 4 questions, I would be very thankful. This might not take much of your time but would would help me a lot.

1) What is your age?

2) Is your association with pc-games rather positive or negative? In other words, would you consider yourself to be a pc-game enthusiast or a non-gamer?

3) If you play games, what type of game genre do you prefer?

and finally,

4) Name 6 adjectives that come into your mind when you think of computer games.

Thank you so much in advance!

23.

I think while i was growing up the consoles were the main focus, i had a amiga but that was the nearest to PC i came. So then i got a PC and over the years i played Doom and the first Myst and aload of other crap games. However i bought a Playstation and played that until 1998 because it had sooo many better games than the PC. During 1998 thought Half-Life came out and seemed to take everyone by storm and we all got addicted to it me and my friends and then mods came out for it like CS and TF and it really carried us into PC gaming. From there we just got addicted to games like Quake 3 Arena and specially in 2001 with games like Black and White and Max Payne and Operation flashpoint the PC was looking to be the platform to have. In 2003 was really the year of the mmorpg starting to take mainstream with me being addicted to 3 mmorpgs.. Star Wars Galaxies, Eve Online and Planetside, it's a shame that all 3 of them are ruined now.

2.

I considering myself to be a major PC gamer though not so much of late because theres not much been released that i enjoy. Faithful Valve have really made the only product of the year worth buying so far, i'm hoping the Crysis SDK will make that worthwwhile too because i love mapping as a hobby. I'm not happy about being addicted to PC games though cause i'd rather be outside getting laid but quite often i ditch my mates on a saturday night to play Counter Strike for money or something lol, which doesn't get you girls lol.

3.

I prefer FPS because it's what made me like PC's in the first place, i am fond of some RTS and RPG's but generally they're mostly crap. You have to love what the PC can do thought specially with all the mini flahs games and puzzle games and mmorpgs even though they all suck, th emod community however is fantastic.

4.

This question for some reason i find hard to sit here and think up even one, i could say aload of cliches but i don't want to lol.

2. I consider myself a hard core PC gamer because I play every genre and I've played and finished over 200 PC games

3. RPGs > Third Person shooters > Adventure games > Turn based strategies > First Person shooters > Simulations > Racing > Real time strategies > Sport Games

I play only games with good stories. In RPGs and adventure games you actually have to THINK, but most gamers don't like to think and just like to kill, kill, kill and prefer FPSs and RTSs

4. not-popular, great ... ( can't think of anything else )

1) What is your age?

19. I first starting gaming (more than your Minesweeper or Solitaire games) when I was about 12 with the EA game Cricket '96, which to this day I hold as the one game I had the most fun with.

2) Is your association with pc-games rather positive or negative? In other words, would you consider yourself to be a pc-game enthusiast or a non-gamer?

As an avid gamer, I would clearly be positive, although I understand that there are many negative aspects to the addiction/hobby.

3) If you play games, what type of game genre do you prefer?

My favourite genre is RTS gaming, followed closely by non-simulation Racing games (i.e. Flatout 2, but not Gran Turismo).

A good FPS (or Third-person shooter --- read: Rogue Trooper was a favourite of mine) will always rank very highly with me, but RPGs are my pet hate.

Simulation games (The Sims, Sim City, Flight Sims, etc.) make up my least favourite genre.

4) Name 6 adjectives that come into your mind when you think of computer games.

Fun
Evolving
Time-Consuming
Underappreciated
Educational (or at least Skill-Developing)
Varietous

1)What is your age?

I'm 16.

2)Is your association with pc-games rather positive or negative? In other words, would you consider yourself to be a pc-game enthusiast or a non-gamer?

Would say postive. I have been into gaming a few years now al ready, after I got my first computer, although I've been playing games for like 6 years or so. Started Online gaming with Call of Duty, then moved to Guild Wars for a little while, and finally came on to Counter-Strike, which I've been playing for over a year. Of course in the mean time I was also playing other single-player games, but now I'm just waiting for something to happen in the CS series, like the PROMOD. Currently was playing Splinter Cell, World In Conflict and with my new computer, which I'll get soon I'll start playing many more games.

3) If you play games, what type of game genre do you prefer?

I don't have a specific prefered genre, I like games from FSP, RPG,RTS to action-stealth games,..

4) Name 6 adjectives that come into your mind when you think of computer games.

Hella fun, challenges, adrenaline . ..

1) 18

2) PC game enthusiast.

3) First person shooters.

4) Fun, time-consuming, immersive, diverse, discriminated-against (I know, not an adjective but I wanted to say it) and underappreciated.

I'd prefer RTS games if there were better ones out there, like a Settlers game that's actually good or a mix of Settlers, Total War, Age of Mythology or whatever. A realistic and gritty game like Company of Heroes except it takes place 2000 years ago.

Man, you know, at first I was annoyed that everybody was spilling their life stories in their replies but I find it really hard myself to contain my opinions.

1) What is your age? 26, gaming since the mid 80's.

2) Is your association with pc-games rather positive or negative? In other words, would you consider yourself to be a pc-game enthusiast or a non-gamer? Primarily a PC gamer, though my attitude towards the industry is somewhat neutral. A lack of creativity, and the sequel driven industry is disappointing and the quality of user interfaces in games has declined an almost incomprehensible amount in the last 10yrs or so with the advent of console ports that were never designed with the mouse as a primary intercae component. Such basis GUI elemnts as drop down menus is now pretty much extinct in games. Nevertheless, the open ended easily patched and modded state of PC games the decades worth of quality gaming material and the thriving indy gaming scene mean there is a lot available on the PC that will never be able to be appreciated on consoles.

3) If you play games, what type of game genre do you prefer?
PC Centric>RPG, Adventure, turn based strategy, Sports Management sims. Consoles>Platformers, Arcade ****sports games.

4) Name 6 adjectives that come into your mind when you think of computer games?
Stagnant, Open, Accessible, Copycat, Piracy, Depth.

Explanation for my adjectives:

Stagnant-The industry as a whole as seen very little progress, or sustained development. It's all bigger, and more of the same.

Open- Games themselves are open, easily modded and altered and typically have far more in-game options then console variants do. The internet ensures multiplayer options are simply and easily added with no extra expense from the consumers perspective.

Accessible-With such a sheer variety over so many years there is quality material out there for anyone, with any budget on any PC. Even a 10yr old PC with a budget of $0.00 as years worth of surprisingly good abandonware game, and freeware indy released. A 20yr old PC can cheaply purchase and play a game like Exile and get a better RPG experience then modern triple AAA games like Oblivion.

Copycat-Very little that's new and innovative, we get more of the same thrust upon us with regularity. If any game does successfully bring out something different then every single game copies it. The absolute ton of WWII type shooters with similar names, all RPG's ultimately being first person action adventure games with character advancement ever since Morrowind, with no variation from that routine.

Piracy-Massive, and impossible to prevent. Pirated games easily available to anyone anywhere in the world on the internet. Cracks available immediately upon release that actually make playing games more convenient if you do crack it then go through the myriad anti-piracy schemes. When any game is available on or occasionally even before the release date, and anyone can get at them with ease and it's near impossible to catch the distributors and downloaders...the sheer profit lost probably vastly exceeds legitimate purchasers.

Depth-PC's will ultimately always be more powerful then consoles, with plenty of memory and huge hard drives. As consoles are ultimely derived from computer hardware (albeit not necessarily mainstream hardware that would be put into a PC), this will always be a fact. Leading to more potential on the PC side, and the interface will mean far more flexibility.

Even something as basic as PC Sports Management sims are incredibly difficult to adequately put out a console experience to match what PC gamers saw in the late 90's.

4. fun, dorky, dorkweed, dorkwad, his or her majestical dorkness, habitual, addictive and last but not least...I believe I am Gordon Freeman incarnate and that entitles me to potentially have sex with a real woman someday. :P :D

1. 18

2. I consider myself someone who used to be a hardcore gamer, I was gaming before I could even pronounce the word "computer" :) But I haven't been gaming that much these last few years.

3. Hardcore RPG's, my favorite genre. if there actually were any decent ones nowadays. FPS and strategy come second.

4. Fun, Immersion, Story, Experience (as in, experiencing it, not as in "ding!"), Adrenaline (call me crazy), Adventure.
Those are some random ones I just dreamt up, I could go on. :P

Best of luck with your essay!

1) What is your age?

23

2) Is your association with pc-games rather positive or negative? In other words, would you consider yourself to be a pc-game enthusiast or a non-gamer?

Positive. I'm a PC enthusiast and a PC gaming enthusiast.

3) If you play games, what type of game genre do you prefer?

I'll play pretty much any genre - and I tend to alternate what I'm playing quite frequently. However, my favourite genre is RPG.

4) Name 6 adjectives that come into your mind when you think of computer games.

  • Creative (strategy/building games)
  • Reactive (fps/rts games)
  • Logical (puzzle games)
  • Organisational/Logistical (strategy games)
  • Computational (rpg & simulation/economic games)
  • Social (MMOs and online gaming)
