They vary. Some will have a max res of 1024x768. Others will be less. Also take into account the refresh rate. Sometimes, the max res will only have a refresh rate of 60hz which is flickery and unbearable for most people. If you can get 1024x768 with a refresh rate of at least 75hz, you're good. Anything less and you'll have to use 800x600 which probably can have a refresh rate of 85hz (or better in some monitors).
14" monitors tended to have satisfactory refresh rates below 1024x768. At least, the ones I have owned.

old monitors are usually not recognized, or not recognized properly, by windows so all that will most likely do is give you every available resolution option, even the ones that are not supported. i suppose you could trial and error your way to maximum resolution as when you fail to confirm a visible image the resolution will jump back to the last working one.
either that or check the unit for a make and model and google it.

I think Windows (all of them) have generic SVGA drivers. They will go down to at least 800x600 for XP and above. He won't have many choices with a 14" CRT.
Well this is most certainly the case, I used to have a philips 14" CRT for my second PC and it could only do 10x7 at 60Hz so practically 800x600 was it's maximum resolution. They vary. Enlighten us.
Many people in those countries are still running small CRT monitors with their PC's. These are people who barely have enough for a gaming tower and so continue to game on an old CRT.I still find it a bit bizarre though since he has a 6850 which is quite pricey by third world standards.
What Jun said is correct. Typically a 14" CRT will max out at 1024x768. Rather than asking this question on a forum you could also have Googled the make/model and found out much more quickly. All we can do is guess since you haven't told us what monitor it is.

when you have craze for somthing you spend some good dough into itThe framerates should be good even if games will be more CPU-dependent at such low resolutions.
Edit:
Anyway, make sure the monitor can do at least 800x600. Some of the very old ones (like one I had from 1992) can only do 640x480 tops.
well spend a good deal of 2 hours looking for the manual that came with it but no luck found the original box so here is the link to the online link to it

now what i understand from a newby point of view 600 by 800 would be the most appropriate for gaming
do let me know guys your recemendations for the resolution

All you need is on the first page: 800x600 @ 87hz. That meets the minimum requirements for Windows and many games.
You could use 1024x768 @ 68hz okay if you have an antiglare screen like the one on the monitor at the left of this image ( I took the photo back in 2003). The monitor is a 15" Compaq with a res of 1024x768 at 60hz.
yes i have an anti galre sereen
husssni
You're set then. The only thing left is to upgrade to a bigger monitor whenever you feel it's time.
so if i set my screen t 1204 by 768 it would be fine ?
husssni
Yes. 1024x768.
There will be flicker because the refresh rate is below 70hz. For me, that's the threshold for a screen that isn't too flickery. Anything below 70hz I use an anti-glare screen.
Make sure you use the AMD/ATI drivers and not the built-in Windows one. Then try 800x600 first. If that works fine, nudge it up to 1024x768.
Edit:
Don't try anything like 1024x768 @ 75hz or 85 hz. You'll run a good chance of damaging the CRT.
If you want to play safe, stick to 800x600 @ 85hz. If I remember correctly, text was way too small at 1024x768.

Windows have built-in video card drivers. But, they're either generic or not as optimized as the newest drivers from the video card maker.
