i have rivatuner set up to change the fan speed on my 8800GT depending on the temp of the GPU. do i need to have rivatuner (the application) open in a window in order for the fan speed settings to kick in?

i usually open rivatuner before launching games and then i hear the fan tick up a notch after playing for awhile. i'm just wondering if i need to do this or will the fan speeds kick in without rivatuner being open in a window. i have noticed a few instances where the fan speed didn't increase while playing when it probably should have done so (portal, HL2: E2). any info is appreciated. thanks.

Do you have it set to go to your taskbar on close? Then you wouldn't have to have the Rivatuner window open.

Edit: Settings > "send to tray on close" is what I meant.

Oh and if you don't mind me asking a question, what is the recommended speed of the fans? I have a evga 8800gts.

You usually need to have it running in the background i think for the fan controls to work. You dont need to have a window opened for it to run though. As long as you see a little orange gear in your task tray it will be fine and you can also monitor your temp by hovering your mouse over it and select a launcher profile of whatever fan speeds you put on. Version 2.08 is the lattest build.

I would say whatever keeps it cool enough for you. I have the 88GT and mine usually hovers at around 54ish on idle at about 37% fan. Then the scheduler is set to go to 60% fan at 60C, 80% at 65, and then 100% at 70C.

i set it at 100 all the time, so do i need to have rivatuner open or in the tray for that to work, or will it just go back to normal once i close it?

One way to find out is to just listen to it. I know i can tell the difference between 100% and 30% fan very easily. Also if you have speedfan it can tell you what your temp is on your GPU so at 100% fan at idle it should be cooler than 30% fan at idle.
