After playing it for awhile now I would give it a 8.5 once the bugs are cleared up.
The graphics are very nice if your machine can handle it. Â I like how they added food to the game. Â I also really like the combine sea and land battles. Â
What I don't like is how they simplified the city management. Â I agree with the devs that it needed to be cut down as it was getting way too bloated with useless buildings. Â I just think they cut it down way too much. Â It's just too simple now for a strategy game. Â Generals also die too quickly. Â I didn't like how they took out the seasons.
The battles would be a lot better if they would simply last longer. Â Sea battles end extremely fast as it seems a bit too easy to sink boats simply by ramming them. Â Land fights are also too quick. Â The AI seems to be very odd. Â In one campaign I couldn't find anyone with a decent army to fight. Â In another I was constantly fighting by getting attacked by an allied group of 3 kingdoms each sending close to a full stack army against me around turn 25.
What I noticed is that the AI likes to fight itself a little too much which depletes their armies in some campaigns. Â In the empty campaign I checked Rome and they were at war with over a dozen factions when they only occupied around 6 cities. Â Seems to be more common that the AI is at complete war with itself.
The one time the AI decided to make a bunch of alliances rather than fight each other the game sent a crazy number of armies against me. Â Which was where I had the most fun with the game.
After a couple patches the game should be much better but, the original Rome far exceeds it.
