I need a wireless router with a WAN port. It should have good speed and must be cheap but perform well. U know the sweet spot thingy. WAN port with a good range and performance is the need.

there are better routers now, but for the price a refurb'd wndr3700 is the way to go

I stopped taking you seriously the second you complained about it not being dual band.
If your going to use dual band your better off just using an ethernet cable or living in a house with no doors or walls.
It's also going to have a lower range than the Dir-655 and I sure know he isn't going to care about custom flashing it.
This is the only router I know of that outputs the greatest range other than the Amped ones.
We have a high class bussiness router at my work and it's **** compared to the Dir-655 we use at our other office.
Sure it has way more features but crapper range.

i had a zoom 5350 for a bit, until i returned it. Too buggy. Reason I got it was because it was the only supported modem that supported 8 downstream channels. That of course is changed now with modems like the dpc3010, zoom5341j, sb6141 etc.

Idk why your complaining about thedir-655 interface, it's very basic and easy to use.
Dual band is pretty much useless because it's very limited in range and can't go through walls very well. What's the point of a wireless devices if your limited? Other than moving files over faster via wifi its a downgrade from 2.4ghz and as useless as 802.11ac. Will you actually notice the difference between 5Ghz and the normal 2.4ghz hell no, our internet providers don't even provide anything close to that speed. Meaning 2.4ghz is still the best RANGE and SPEED. If youre going to do data transfers its much better to do them via Ethernet it's faster and safer. Its faster than wifi and not worth the hassle of transfers getting messed up. Ive transferred games which are over 4gb via wifi then get a message files are missing...

also the wndr3700 itself is much faster. Good for torrenting and QOS and playing games at the same time. Albeit that is even pushing the wndr3700 to its limits. The dir-655 would just die.

Also they tend to be underpowered on the cpu side, and the wifi on them tend to be mediocre, except in your n600dual band is gr8

Could be your harddrive. Especially if it is external and going through USB 2.0, etc.

Could be, but I'm going from internal HDD from one PC to another internal HDD in the other PC. I'm nearly sure they are both 3.5inch 7200rpm 32MB and 64MB Cache. Both PCs are pretty powerful too. There has to be something else.[QUOTE="zaku101"]

What don't you understand about 5ghz being **** than 2.4ghz in a 2 story house? Other than LAN data transfers 5ghz is a downgrade of 2.4ghz..
Like really whats the point of actually degrading wireless range when the only reason you actually go wireless is because you want the best range..

It works like this the router lets out a crappy 5ghz signal and one 2.4ghz signal out at the same time, the 2.4ghz signal gets better range, then you have the crappy 5ghz for show and tell yet your friends aren't impressed when it can't even reach the second floor... Then you realize wait I can still sit a few feet away from the router to get the same speed as 2.4ghz for torrenting and stuff :D. Yet move a little 2 far and your wondering wtf is the point of even going wireless?
For example my gf lives in a 2 story house, her wireless box is located in the basement in the worst place possible near some iron pipes. However even from the second floor she can get 2 bars. We tried 5ghz, the network didn't even show up.
I've even setup a 5ghz network in a customers house, the damn thing would only give him 1 bar and that was just from his basement to his first floor. Keep in mind he had a very large basement about the size of the first floor of a house. Changed it to 2.4ghz only and I had an amazing 4 bars and much better speed.
Other than transferring large amount of data close to the router it's a useless gimmick.

and yes 5ghz shines with fast internet and lan transfers. Hence why you get the wndr3700 which is DUAL band.

Yes That's probably true but when 90% of Americans don't even have 20mbs it's just useless. 5ghz might actually be noticable if someone had a 100mbs connection which is very rare due to the cost or actual need for such a speed.
I also don't trust a router with internal antennas. Did a replacement for a customer once, replaced his super old G router that had 2 external antennas, got him a new dual band router with internal antennas, only saw a 1 bar improvement :/

Oh my I am sorry I didn't know we had to use big boy words on here to make us sound legit. I was pretty sure you got the idea when I referred to bars. I didn't know you wanted me to sound all complex and use transmission power which basically equals bars/signal strength and range. I didn't know I had to complicate your life with my simplitictiy and not over think things that didn't need it.
I am sorry I don't get the point of 3. When that's how you actually compare wireless performance within a real life everyday environment. We don't all live in a glass houses without any bounders or interference of any kind. Meaning unless you do then yes my environment of choice would have been bad. Also we are by no means reaching the cap of 2.4ghz when it comes to internet downloading when 100mbs cost $200 where I live a month, transferring files locally yes 5ghz is amazing, for everything else it's pretty useless.

there simply isn't enough open spectrum at the 2.4ghz range. Pushing 40mhz in the 2.4ghz range isn't even allowed in a lot of places... Wireless ac uses 80mhz in the 5ghz band.
