My son is too young to read well - he can read one or two words but not yet accomplished for sentences and paragraphs of text. He loves Fate and Heroes of Might & Magic IV. Stuff with monsters and fighting.

I'm looking for a new PC game for him somewhat in this genre (although anything fun would be good).I've looked through piles of reviews but thought it'd be better to ask the group.

Any suggestions?

PS, it there can be some blood, etc. - doesn't have to be a kiddie game, but not too evil. :P

How complicated can the game mechanics be? If he can't read well I take it he doesn't fully understand the items/attributes for FATE? And does he understand the mosters in HOMMIV with their abilities/spells/ect? But he is still able to play?

I would suggest King's Bounty: The Legend if he likes HOMMIV...it does have TONS of text, but you can skip over them. The game itself is absolutely amazing.

Well Diablo is not suitable for him, but a good alternative would be Titan Quest. Basically same diablo formula, only it revolves around Mythology and is a lot less "evil" themed than the Diablo series.

Honestly I am a bit confused...there is a lot of reading in HOMM IV too...maybe not story line stuff...but in order to play the game you have to read all the spell descriptions, monsters stats and descriptions, ect.

Thx for all the helpful replies. I'll answer some of the questions that have been asked.

He can read a bit and is great at memorization. Fate is super easy once you get it and reading beyond a few key words is not needed to play. In HOMMIV I can tell him what the goal is of the scenario he's playing. The rest of the reading is just fluff. Once he learns what a spell or weapon or magic item does, he never forgets - if he sees a new one he asks us. Of course he doesn't play it like an adult would but he can get around and win the simpler scenarios. He can read enough to understand all the attributes (once you know 10 or 20 words by sight you got it) and he's super with the math.

It's the games like Baldur's gate where you absolutely have to read and comprehend dialog in order to play the game that are hard.

I guess by 'evil' I didn't mean demons and devils I meant anything raunchy, mean/torturing/demeaning, pointless graphic violence or vulgarity, etc. He does like the challenge and seriousness of games targeted for teens/adults.

I've seen the Titan's quest demo, he is able to play that one so maybe I'll buy the game.

I'll look at the other suggestions too. Any more?

titan quest is a great game, and all the characters are voice acted (and it's certainly not necessary to follow the story to play and enjoy the game); you should definitely get it. if he likes the hom&m series, he'll probably like age of wonders 1 & 2 (a turn-based strategy game as well). you might have a hard time locating them for a decent price though. and warcraft 3 might not be a bad idea either.

How I'd love to see the look on his face when he walks in to see his young child sleeping with whores. Priceless. Great game though.

It's amazing what one word can do lol.

Anyway, action-rpg's don't have much reading going on and you should definitely look at Prince of Persia triple pack, if not, just Prince of Persia Sands of Time and PoP the Two Thrones, also, DMC 4 (Devil May Cry 4) is good looking, has some blood and what's creepy in it isn't that "mature".

Sacred was a pretty light Diablo-clone. The graphics were pretty colorful and the themes not too dark (unless it happened in real life, but it's all very fantasy). Almost all of the quest are "find the enemy in --> direction and kill him," so I think it would be simple enough. The combo system might be a touch complex, but if he's a numbers guy then it'll be no problem. Great game that can be had for $10-20 these days.

But exactly how old is you kid?

lol..

Diablo isn't very hard to play, and you can skip over all the reading. It is a little bloody though..
