When I was younger I was hooked on command and conquer and age of empires, but since then I've not really explored much in the RTS sector.

I'm looking for a good, recent RTS to start playing. Doesn't necessarily have to be completely war-based, but preferably easy to get into for a rookie-RTSer. What would you recommend?

hmm...Dawn of War 2 and Company of Heroes are probably the best places to start. Don't go online with it right away, practice on the AI b4 playing against other humans.

Dawn Of War using Necrons, or maybe Tau. Necrons are much slower, but only maneages 1 resource and Tiaer 1 units can be usefull yn later Tiers with upgrades,

World in Conflict is an amazing game that I highly recommend. It's not a hardcore RTS by any means, very easy to pick up and play. It also has the best graphics/effects in a RTS game.....So the requirements are a little steep compared to other games. If you can manage to max it completely out in DX10 at a good resolution, it's breath-taking. It also has a pretty damn good story with it. I'm not even a RTS fan, but WiC is definitely a "must buy" for any PC gamer IMO.
