I’m gaming at 1440p / 144 hz and using a g sync monitor. Would the RTX 2080ti be overkill?
I just want ultra settings at high frame rates

If you want to stay as close to 144fps as possible on all games, it is not overkill. However, RTX 2080 is very good at 1440p also.
No such thing as overkill when it comes to GPU's... CPU and RAM of course but for a GPU you buy the best you can afford to because its the main component that determines the quality of the experience you have outside of your monitor.
Also at that resolution and frame rate your CPU needs to keep up so you better not have a i5 or a Ryzen chip otherwise you would be better off getting a RTX 2080.
@jopython52: If its a 6 core coffee lake i5 then you are all good and a RTX 2080 will almost double your performance and I think it would be a better choice than a Ti when you counter in cost/performance.
@horgen:I dropped down from a 1080 Ti to a 2070 and honestly can't tell much of difference in performance aside from the 3Dmark benchmarks.

That's supposed to be a drop in performance. Odd you don't notice anything yet.

Not really... They are pretty close and in some games the RTX 2070 is faster, also mine is overclocked so the gap you see below is even smaller.
When I was building my system I looked through MANY reviews and it pretty much seems like a good after market RTX 2070 once overclocked gives you 1080 Ti stock performance but with less VRAM.
@horgen: I was also, I wasn't planning on getting a new GPU when building this system but saw the prices on Gumtree of GTX 1080 Ti's and just went for it sold mine for £400 and grabbed a Strix 2070 on sale for £520.
And yeah a heavily overclocked 1080 Ti comes close to a 2080 at stock but a overclocked 2080 like yours is a chunk faster.
A 1080 Ti is basically the 1070 Ti when it comes to the 2070/2080 minus the RTX features... Very small gaps in performance between the 3 cards, which is why 2070 makes complete sense to me I didn't need a faster GPU just wanted to see the whole ray tracing thing in action with Metro and its worth it.
Ah, my budget just wouldn’t stretch to a Ti so I just got and installed a EVGA RTX 2080 XC Ultra.
Very nice results. Mostly all my games at 1440p / 144 hz with ultra settings are getting well above 100 fps. Some games hover in the 80’s and I’m more than happy with that.

Now this was the type of comment I was looking for to begin with. I'm currently using 1080Ti and I was thinking about getting a 2070 myself and the fact I'm not interested gaming in 4K anytime soon and I'll remain 1440p/144Hz for a long time, this answers my question on purchasing RTX 2070 next week or so now I got my Tax Return.
Should be a good pair with my Ryzen 7: 2700X/RTX 2070.

There is never harm in getting more performance, especially if you have a 144Hz display.
That said the 2070 and 1080 Ti are close enough that the performance difference is negligible, who is going to notice 92FPS vs 97FPS?... No one.
It was worth it to me, I did have to lower settings and haven't noticed a performance drop but got extra features. Get a good aftermarket card and it should be able to hit 2000-2040Mhz on the core with ease and 7500Mhz on the VRAM which and temps will stay under 60c like my Strix:

By seeing these benches definitely 2080Ti for 2K 144Hz monitor on ultra settings
@PredatorRules: Well the only games IMHO that benefit higher than 60Hz are FPS games... And most of those where designed to run at higher frames thus they are usually easier to run, Doom, Wolfenstein, Fortnite, PUBG Apex and even the new BF FIrestorm can run at 100-120FPS on a RTX 2070 with ease at 1440p ultra... That extra 30-40FPS on top of already 90FPS is not worth double the $.
Witcher 3 and assassins creed running at higher framerates than 60 is meh.
@Grey_Eyed_Elf: Basically if you own 144Hz monitor and you don't get 100+fps you're not using the full monitor's potential.
Then again I think the whole 144Hz, 1ms etc is bs unless you're into competitive gaming and you are aiming for top cash prices (MLG)
@PredatorRules: Ive owned a 160hz monitor... I couldn't tell the difference once i went above 110-120fps. Obviously the better the card the more future proof it is but the 280 and Ti prices for their performance aren't worth it.

They are high, but I told myself I was going to build at least one all out system. Do not know if I will do a full custom loop again, as it took me a long time and a lot of headache to make it exactly right. And I burned the hell out of myself on accident. lol
