Gotta say the reviews on the 7950X are impressive but as @04dcarraher pointed out, best to wait for Zen 4 with 3D Vcache which is supposed to drop sometime early-late next year. Those will wipe the floor with the rest of the Zen 4 line-up.

Power and temp - yikes.

@rmpumper: 95 temps are now the norm as AMD said and won't degrade the CPU while staying in power. So this is a new agriculture CPU.

Raptor Lake Intel's 13th gen is releasing October 20th I expect it'll beat Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 in gaming. But In early January 3d vcache variants of Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 are rumored to release and I expect AMD to win the gaming crown back or tie.

I'm planning on retiring my old i7 5820k oc 4.5ghz 6c/12t and upgrading to a 8c/16t. But haven't decided between current gen Zen 3 Ryzen 5000, 12 gen Alder Lake ,next gen Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 3d vcache, or 13 gen Raptor Lake.

Intel's big/little architecture requires Windows 11 for full performance as Windows 10 isn't optimized for it which I see as a negative, Intel also disabled AVX-512 which usually doesn't benefit pc gaming, with the exception of Emulation like Yuzu, and RPCSs3 which I'm planning on using.

I'm leaning towards getting a Ryzen 7 7800x3d vcache.

Gaming on a 2019 LG 4k OLED that only has G-sync so I'll be upgrading my graphics card to a rtx 4090.

Deliding and applying liquid metal drops temperatures by more than 20c 16:00 in if you don't fill like watching whole video.

@locus-solus: Yeah it's nice that they're using agriculture. Seems very eco-friendly.

Kinda disappointed in the wattage and temps of these new chips. I get that Moore's Law is dead and people expect a certain amount of performance gains, but maybe we could switch to a two-year cycle between generations?

But nah. Wall Street wants new shit annually. Crank up those temps!

You can always under volt and get lower temperatures. of course you will loose some performance.

Temperature supposably go down to 55C at 127 watts.

@locus-solus: High temps don't really concern me as I kinda crank the fan curve and whenever something hits over 80c, the fans go into 100% mode and fan noise are almost none-existence. When I do upgrade I'll try Thermal Grizzly on my AIO Corsair.

My 8700 is still fine, if I do get an upgrade it will be an 8 core, but I'll definitely underclock it. 50% less power for 5% less performance! It used to be that us consumers were the crazy ones trying to squeeze a tiny bit more performance and get crazy temps and other problems, now it's AMD and Intel trying to top the charts no matter the cost.

it's a longevity statement. how long to you plan to be running your PCU at those temps? if only a few years, maybe you can get away with it

AM5 Zen 4 CPUs IHS/Integrated Heat Spreader is 2mm thicker than AM4 CPUs. This is to help with cooler compatibly, but that extra 2mm IHS is why AM5 Zen 4 is running at 95C.

The 3D V-Cache versions next year are definitely the ones to wait for. Motherboards and DDR5 prices will be cheaper then too. The AM5 platform is too pricey at the moment.

Agree with those AM5 & DDR5 Ram being expensive as of now due to Holiday months we're in now. Early 2023 is to be expected during CES 2023 event so not that so far off on those 3D V-Cache.

My next CPU will definitely be one with 3D cache, I was very impressed with what they did with the 5800X3D (excuse the nomenclature)
