they may not use a colour wheel but their colours are vastly inferior to Samsung's DLPs the XBR2/3 has very poor colour accuracysony by far. they dont use the color whell like the samsungs. sony and jvc are the two top rear projection 1080ps out out the moment.

I'd go with the Samsung cuz it's got better contrast ratio and better coloursXboxUndergroundThey both have 10000:1 contrast ratio.
then why are the sonys rated as a much better tv. because of the name? because the tecnologies are different. sony and jvc use liquid crystal over silicon. dlp uses one chip and a color wheel were as the other two donot use a color wheel and have three chips.ebkboythe XBR2 is rated so highly because it performs better than previous LCD tvs the LCD version of the tv is rated better than the LCoS version anyways fromt Cnet's review testing Sony LCoS XBR2 Before color temp (20/80) 6,128/6,350K Good After color temp 6,421/6,462K Good Before grayscale variation +/- 201K Good After grayscale variation +/- 53K Good Color of red (x/y) 0.674/0.324 Poor Color of green 0.276/0.703 Poor Color of blue 0.138/0.057 Average Overscan 3.5 percent Average Black-level retention All patterns stable Good 2:3 pull-down, 24fps No Poor Defeatable edge enhancement Yes Good Samsung HLS-5687w Before color temp (20/80) 6,737/6,793K Good After color temp 6,469/6,527K Good Before grayscale variation +/- 249K Good After grayscale variation +/- 66K Good Color of red (x/y) 0.639/0.317 Good Color of green 0.288/0.627 Average Color of blue 0.150/0.058 Good Overscan 4.25% Average Black-level retention All patterns stable Good 2:3 pull-down, 24fps Y Good Defeatable edge enhancement Y Good
samsung uses the same parts on their television as sony does. sony televisions are only more expensive than samsungs because of their nameddldave
SXRD sets are Sony's implimentation of LCoS, which is a different display technology from DLP. It's not accurate to say that these two tvs have the "same parts".

i researched both these tv's for about 2 months, and ended up buying the samsung 50" 1080p dlp. looking at them side by side at the store, the samsung had a much brighter picture, better contrast, and better colors. the sony did seem to be a little clearer, but not enough to justify spending an extra $300, plus the samsung accepts 1080p signals through component cables, and the sony does not. i've had my samsung for about 2 months now and it has been working perfectly.
Thank you for your reply. This is the kind of response I was looking for. I have a Sony 1080p SXRD display and I can't get the colors exactly right. I don't like the idea of moving parts in the DLP sets but the color accuracy might cancel that out. Does anyone know the bulb life for the Samsungs?i researched both these tv's for about 2 months, and ended up buying the samsung 50" 1080p dlp. looking at them side by side at the store, the samsung had a much brighter picture, better contrast, and better colors. the sony did seem to be a little clearer, but not enough to justify spending an extra $300, plus the samsung accepts 1080p signals through component cables, and the sony does not. i've had my samsung for about 2 months now and it has been working perfectly.
