I saw the new Samsung 9000 series LED at my local Best Buy and the picture looked amazzzzzing. This was the regular 2D mode, it was not on 3D mode. They were showing Avatar on it and I could see all of the tiny little details on the character's faces. The movie looked 10 times better than my current LCD television.

When the price drops next year, I will definitely try to purchase one.

If you have not seen it yet, go to your local Best Buy, they will most likely have it on display.

Plasma > LCD with LED backlight. Nothing more to it, Samsung's TVs are far from the best.

You want the best? Go with Panasonic or Pioneer if you can still find any.

Not an expert, but my sister has had two Samsung HDTVs malfunction within 1.5 years. They were not cheap models either (over $1,000 each). I have a much more modest LG and have had it for about the same amount of time with 0 problems.

As a Samsung user for several years, Plasma is the best way to go. Panasonic has some amazing plasma HDTVs. I'll never go back to Samsung.

Last time I bought one it broke in 15min, with the circuitry screwing up and showing lines. Never again. Buy a Panasonic plasma.

I have 2010 models of each.

Samsung PN58C7000 3d 58" plasma > Sony KDL-55NX810 240 Hz LED 3d 55" LCD

The Sony was $300 cheaper, and came with a ps3 slim. Have a friend with employee discounts for just Sony brand, otherwise would not have got it.

I bought this tv over the weekend at Best Buy. I needed a tv for my living room.

Samsung - 42" / 720p / 600Hz / Plasma HDTV

It is only 720p, but the picture is extremely sharp and detailed. When you look at the picture you may think that it's 1080p. Very beautiful picture with rich dark black color saturation. And the refresh rate is very high at 600Hz, so it is perfect for my game systems.

At only $500 it was a great bargain.

600Hz doesn't mean anything other then marketingand I'm not sure how a screen that's 720p looks 1080p... Personally I would have gone with the 42inch Panasonic C2 which is $479.99. At least you got a Plasma and not LCD/LED. Enjoy!

On a 42" set from 5' away 720p and 1080p are impossible to distinguish with the human eye so what would of been better to say is that your 720p TV looks just as good as the 1080p sets you looked at from over 5' away.

^yes, it is in my living room so I end up sitting about 9 feet away from this 720p Plasma.

My primary tv in my bedroom is only 4 feet away from me. A very large 46 inch Samsung 1080p LCD. I have major space constraints in my bedroom, but I like having it close to me. Because whenever I use it, it becomes like looking into "a portal to another world" :)

You're very late to the party. Burn-in stopped being an issue in 2007. And yes plasma TVs really are "that" much better. There isn't a single LCD/LED TV that looks better then my plasma from 2008.

I'm kind of partial to the Bravia engine, 40" Bravia in my bedroom and a 55" Bravia in the Living Room. I will admit, though, the new Samsungs do have a pretty decent picture.

And what would be the reason new plasmas still experience burn in??? I had to run a break-in dvd on my stepdads new plasma just to get the TNT logo off the bottom of the screen. He left it on over a weekend while he and my mom were out of town... "it kept the dog entertained" (**facepalm**).

Its not impossible for it to happen on most sets, but its very hard considering all the countermeasures plasma's have. Something is obviously wrong with that plasma, or there is some sort of misuse as that is not something that would happen normally. Also what brand and model was that plasma?

Cnet 2008: "When we review plasmas here at CNET, most of them--including many budget models--don't experience any problems with burn-in."

Samsung PN50C550G1F is the model he has, it's approx. 2 months old (tried to link but kept erroring). I don't know any of the settings, he just calls me when his tech "isn't working."

55" Samsung LCD compared with the equivalent 55" Bravia. At the time both were close to the same price, now it seems as if the Sony's price has had one heck of a price drop.

That would be abuse right there. Even LCD's can suffer burn in leaving a still image on, though it takes a lot longer. Being able to get the TNT logo off after being left on for a weekend is a testament to the burn-in resistance of plasmas now.

Burn-in is still an issue for plasmas, IF you misuse the tv. Leave the screen protection settings on, don't leave still images such as logos or HUDs on for several hours, break the tv in properly and don't do max brightness/cell light etc. for 2.35:1 movies, at least until the break in is done.

It takes a little more care/knowledge than using an LCD, but you get a much nicer display in a plasma imo, for a cheaper price too.

Something is obviously being misused or there is a problem with the TV. Again burn-in on new sets is not normal.

Let me guess, you're still in the break-in period and/or you use have a high brightness. The phosphor must age before IR goes away completely, as in it becomes very rare.

My 2009 Samsung plasma gets pretty bad IR, and very quickly. It goes away in less than a couple minutes using the scrolling screen though. It has maybe 3-4 hundred hours use I'd guess, always on med brightness levels. But I never did a full break-in, maybe 50 hours. Fell into the opinions that break-in was no longer necessary, and got impatient because I hadn't had a tv for a couple years.

So with my 2010, I made sure to do 200+ hours of break-in before any normal use whatsoever. IR is pretty much non-existent, save for watching a widescreen movie with black bars top/bottom for a couple hours, but it is very light IR, goes away in seconds.

I did have a 720p 42" Pioneer plasma from 2003. Maybe I just wasn't savvy to the fact that plasmas had IR/burn-in, but I never noticed anything with that tv, and I used it as a monitor on desktop/games for months. So I was surprised my 2009 Samsung suffered from IR so rapidly.

Pioneer's plasma TVs have almost always been great. I only wish they didn't stop production. I guess for my next TV I'll have to settle with Panasonic.

Image retention does not = burn-in. Burn-in is more permanent and it is very hard to cause Burn-in on newer plasmas with standard viewing. Image retention can and does occur especially when the set is new, but if your set is not running in torch mode, then even image retention is not very prevalent on newer plasmas after the first 100 hours or so.

To be fair to LCD, I doubt if your parents spent hours self-calibrating their LCD televisions. They may be using the factory settings ?? Being that you are in an internet forum, I'm sure you are the type of person who spent hours calibrating your plasma (like how I did myself).

Now that I have a plasma, I will admit that the colors are surprisingly vibrant and realistic. I love it a lot. But my LCD has it's own unique picture settings that I like also !

Did you make sure it actually is wall mountable? Not all LEDs have the VESA holes or whatever they're called.

Plasmas are no longer behemoths. Mine is 3" bigger screen size, 13lbs heavier, and .02 inches thicker than my 55" LED.

Yeah for example the 50inch PRO-101FD is 2" thick and 69lbs. There is even the 54inch TC-P54Z1 which is 1" thick.

Kind of odd - I've got a 42" Panny X1 plasma, 2009 model. I did the ~100hr break-in and calibrated it roughly per AVSforum, and it's been pretty much great - I have yet to witness any IR, though I do have all of the screen protection stuff on. My roommate has the exact same model - he also ran a break-in, though not sure for how long. He *didn't* calibrate it. I have noticed IR on it once or twice... it was the GH:WT pause menu screen, so he probably had it on there for a couple of hours. It disappeared during watching a movie. Not really sure what I did to my screen that has it completely and totally avoid any IR where he can still get it.

Let me guess, you're still in the break-in period and/or you use have a high brightness. The phosphor must age before IR goes away completely, as in it becomes very rare.

No i did the break in for 100hrs.My settings right now i think brightness is on the mid to high 60 and contrast at 80 with probably 500hrs

I agree that Samsung makes a great TV, but input lag kind of kills them for gaming. I think the best decently priced TV you can get right now is the latest Panasonic VT series (VT25 -- it has been reported that there is no input lag) followed by the latest G series (G20/G25) and the latest S series (S2) which have a single frame lag. No other manufacturer does as well with input lag.

Modern plasmas last up to 100,000 hours. That's about 35 years watching TV 8 hours a day. Some LCDs only have 30,000 of life (about 10 years 8 hours a day).

And yeah, echoing a bunch of other posts in the thread - plasmas have long been the informed choice for quality (a couple of years at least, while is when I started paying attention) with a lot of 'but's and reasoning that doesn't make sense without stopping to think about it (brightness in a store environment vs. a home viewing environment). However, a fair number of people tend to just repeat what they've heard without any real research, so on places like this there's been a bunch of uninformed talk flying back and forth in the past. And yeah, a simple falsehood will beat a complicated truth every time. :)

Concidering Panasonic hired many of the Pioneer engineers and possibly even bought the Kuro patents (I know they wanted to, but I'm not sure if the sale went through), buying Panasonic might not be settling. Some changes to make their TVs closer to the Kuros have taken place this year.

Panasonic does hold the patents, and next year's set should beat out the Elite Kuro. These are things I'm well aware of. Though Panasonic maybe using the tech to produce TVs with better picture, the build quality, and look of the TV might not come with it. One thing that was very appealing about the Elite Kuro was its frame, removable speakers, and other factors such as service/warranty, not to mention the picture controls. Another minor thing is the TV remote which out of the box works with my receiver and looks a heck of a lot better then the Panasonic remotes. Obviously to me the picture out weighs those factors, but they're still a nice thing to have.

Does it really matter if It is 720p or 1080p? I plan on getting a 50" plasma Panasonic for Christmas & the 720p is cheaper.

Thanks,

Joe

Depending on how far you will be sitting from the TV.

So 5 to 7 feet on a 50inch TV and you will notice 1080p.
