3 is the only PSU connector. The other two are mobo connectors, some just happen to be long and some short. I have the short ones. And no it shouldn't matter which slot you pick.

Actually 1 & 3 are psu connectors. But anyway, only use 1 of them, never use both 1 & 3. That's a big no no.

Number 1 connects to the PSU also. And pick one PSU connector, not both.

For my seagate sata no jumper is for 3.0 gbit/sec speed and with a jumper is for 1.5 gbit/sec.

Hi, yes you should use 1 & 2. 1 goes in the PSU and 2 in the mobo. 3 is an older connector for thoses that don't have 1 from their PSU. You can plug 2 in any SATA port on your motheboard. SATA does not have "masters" or "slaves", theses are IDE things. (IDE is probably what you use for your cdrom, it has a larger connector. It's often called ATA too).

Nicely said, thankyou. So all i need to do is sata psu connecter and satall connecter into mobo an bang. I well be installing vista 64bit on that HD but im going to add 1 more HD in a month, would i need to do anything different? i dont want raid 0 or 1 just a basic setup.

No, all drives are setup in the same way. Just make sure you select the right drive to boot from in the bios setup.

1.) is a serial ata power from your PSU unless you got a long cord that will connect 1 and 2 to your mobo. 2.)must go to your mobo. 3.) must go to your P.S.U. If you want 2 H.D.D.'s, it is better to set the jumpers to master/slave or you can just let your B.I.O.S. detect which drive has your O.S. on it and leave your jumpers alone.roulettethedog

Yes, all drives look the same for your PC. It doesn't know which ones have operating systems on then, and
you can have as much drives as you want. The only thing special is that you use the bios setup utility to
specify a list of location to search for operating systems. Usually you have some options in this utility that
look like "first boot device", "second boot device" etc. For example you could set the first option to your
cd-rom drive, and the second option to the hard drive with vista. That way when there is a bootable cd
in your drive it will be booted, and if nothing is found it will boot vista. To setup your second hard drive when
it is installed you can use vista. I don't know how vista does this, but here is how I do it in XP:
right click on "my computer"->"manage"
go in "disks management"
here you have a view of your drives and their partitions, and you can edit partitions on any drive etc.

There are no master/slave jumpers, he uses sata drives.

roulettethedog

My SATA has master/slave/custom. A western Digital 160 gig.

Then it's either a PATA drive, or the jumpers are for something else like drive settings. Master/Slave is an IDE thing that allows to signal to two drives on the same cable. There is only one drive on a sata channel.
Each command that's sent in the IDE channel has a bit that tells if the destination is the master or the slave.
The jumper sets the drive so that it ignores or not the commands depending on this bit. master/slave jumpers on
sata drives makes as much sense as master/slave settings on a usb stick. The interface simply does not have that

Here is a quote from the western digital website about their SATA drives:

Set the jumpers:

The drive has a jumper block located next to the ATA power connector (see image below). There is generally no need to change the default jumper setting in order to use the drive. The only use of this jumper block is to enable or disable power management for the drive. The drives ship in the default position with the shunt on pins 1-2 (disabled). Alternately, the jumper can be removed completely with the same result. Placing the shunt on pins 3-4 (enabled), designates that the drive will power-up in standby mode. For most users the default position should be used.Western Digital

3 is called a molex connector (just so you know) its a power connector and you can use them to connect many things together with only a few actual power connectors (provided they allow chaining devices and your wattage is sufficient).

Many manuals will call them molex connectors which is pretty much the only reason you should know, IMO.

My SATA has master/slave/custom. A western Digital 160 gig.

They its not really SATA, SATA is pretty much cable select by default.
