Has anyone else been a huge fan of MMORPGs, over the years, and decided to walk from them? Realized you were done with them for good?

I've been playing MMORPGs since Everquest: Ruins of Kunark. They've been a big part of my gaming life. So much so that part of what got me into the IT field (starting back in high school) was learning about what would make EQ run better on the family computer and then my own PCs as I built and rebuilt them. I've played them off and on since then but it's only been this year that I really started experiencing serious burn out. I've had it before and I would stop playin for a while but this time it's different. Usually when I lost interest in one game I move on to another or go back to an older game or just stop playing for a while. I've done that a few times this year but things simply weren't enjoyable. I'd play for a few days before I got tired. I realize it was the style of gameplay that I no longer cared for. I still enjoyed the lore and would even love if a single player game set in many of the worlds these games have but the actual MMORPG gameplay either it be Everquest 1 or 2, World of Warcraft, Rift, Age of Conan or even DC Universe Online was simply no longer fun. Not only that but in the end I came to the conclusion I was simply tired of the genre itself. I no longer found it enjoyable.

It was made very clear to me yesterday. I updated Everquest 2 because I had free time due to the Sony hack (SOE was hacked as well). I spent a few hours in the game and felt nothing. Wasn't even frustrated, just blah. I figured enough was enough. I usually kept several installed on my PC just in case I want to play them again but I felt I needed to make a clean break. So I uninstalled the remaining games I had on my computer.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm
Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer
Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited
Rift
Everquest 2: Sentinel's Fate
Guild Wars

For the first time I feel like I'm honestly done with MMORPGs. Not tired or need a break or a different game provides a new setting but done completely with them. I don't care if I never play another one again. It's kinda sad in a way though but time to move on. Just curious if anyone else had to go through this or is currently going through this? If so were you glad you made the leap? Do you regret at times?

I said I was done, seriously done, with Morrowind/Oblivion/Fallout 3 about five times each game. A few months later something would randomly remind me of the game and I'd take a quick peek at the forums or tesnexus... next thing I knew I'd spent 6 hours modding the game into perfection yet AGAIN.

I'm not super hard core about playing MMOs. Usually when I play a game like WoW, ill play it for a month and then come back to it maybe a year.

Well, one could do away with a previous addiction like I did with World of Warcraft (vanilla, pre-BC). The curiosity for a new MMO will always be there though and it usually takes a great MMO to get you back in that addiction. Hopefully this isn't the case for me when SW:TOR and/or Guild Wars 2 comes along. :(

I agree. I always say when I quit WoW or an MMO, I say you know what? I'm done. I'm not playing this crap every again. Then months down the road I find myself lurking on the game forums, feeling all nostalgic and wishing to play again and I do play again once more. Rinse repeat, it always gets me. :(

Nope, I don't have the same problems. Got tired of WoW after 2 months in Cataclysm, promised I'll never play again, got another two months, played only 3 hours, then after almost two months I got sick of all the mediocre games we get (in general, not just PC) and the mediocre overhyped games we're going to get and I got 6 months of WoW, started going for Loremaster (again) and I've never had so much fun with a "lengthy" game. Games nowadays are too bad not play games I enjoy but take most of the time I would spend on other useless games that only make me waste money instead of getting some enjoyment out of them.

Don't think so since I'm looking to start a discussion regarding this.

I can actually understand this outlook but I've done the take a break thing until something catches my eye. The actual uninstalling of the games, that were quite large due to years of updates, makes this different I think. My WoW folder was over 30GB large due to all the expansions installed and the update files that were kept. After Burning Crusade I went for the digital versions of the games. It's why it stayed on my PC for so long. I didn't want to redownload all the updates or rebuy the game for updated discs. I haven't touched WoW since Cata came out and I had no desire to play it again but just kept it just in case. This was the same with the others that got uninstalled. Rift being the latest which was all digital and I managed to use my beta files for the main client so the initial download wasn't so bad. So the uninstall of them is something I see as significant.

Granted something could bring me back in the future but it would have to be something that does not play like any MMORPG on the market. Not talking about features but the core gameplay has to be different and non-mmorpg. No classes, button based abilities, slow leveling, time sinks, etc. I don't see that happening so I think I should be fine and not relapse. haha Having slept after uninstalling the games I feel pretty good and don't regret my actions at all.

I'm also done with mmorpg's, i think that was in 2007.

I had a couple of reasons: university asked some of my time so i needed to make some free time + back then i decided to cut back on gaming and practice guitar for 4 hours a day (I am so f***ing glad i did that) because i always wanted to become a good musician.

So i did those things, became a very good metal guitarist and started my own band with a grade-school friend
Now, most of my time I'm composing music, rehearsing, gigging, doing research for the university and doing crazy stuff with my friends.

I still love gaming but my opinion has changed about it, I think its a big waste of time because when you game you don't gain anything in life, its fun and thats about it, you are not developing skills or learning a lot of new sh*t.

So now i have around 1-2 hours a day I can game, and when i game i make sure its a really good game, with a very good story and atmo (think witcher 2 or fallout) because i try to enjoy games as I enjoy other works of art.

Ps: This is just my personal opinion.

Then you have a stronger willpower than most. I've found that it's pretty much true. If the person played MMOs at one point, they'll go back to them again. I have quite a few friends that "quit" WoW, Rift and all of those other abominations, only to go back to them within a year.

The only type of MMORPG that interests me is the twitch combat kind, with pvp focus and sandbox elements. Sadly, few ever existed. I'm currently playing Darkfall Online, and really only looking forward to Planetside 2. I'm hoping for more games that fit my playstyle in the future.

Anything with tab-targetting and rigid class systems, no twitch, no territory control through pvp systems, and all I can say is "blah". There just aren't enough MMORPGs that are based around twitch skills and a competitive pvp environment.

MythPro1
Sure. I have been focusing more on hand held gaming since I got my 3DS and have started to replay some older Wii games and focusing more on my PS3. My 360 still doesn't get as much attention as it should and the last game I bought for that was Fable 3. Overall though my gaming has actually lessened from what it used to be. Of course being out of college and working full time played a huge part in that.

Surely The Old Republic will draw you back, no?

Starshine_M2A2
Nope. :) I love the CG trailers that were done for the game but any interest I might have had was killed as soon as I saw actual gameplay and how combat was actually done. More of the same.

I am very excited for GW2! I have not played much of 1 (thinking about buying it, or NWN1/2, or Titan Quest), but 2 appears to be a much more actiony/interactive experience, and the world is beautiful! The game looks pretty amazing.

Played original everquest for five years..It was great a challenge i mean a real challenge..Tried eq2 after that and it never fealt like old eq..Dumbed down game..Than wow came out i gave beta a go but couldnt get into it..From that time on ive tried all mmorpgs to get that old edge mmorpg feel..Nothing compared..What did everquest have that i couldnt get with other mmorpgs..Style a challenge, maybe it was the long quests to hang out with guildies an make ton of friends..Its some thing ive yet to find in any mmorpg since..Still have like 10 friends who call me on the phone from time to time..Its amazing the connection ive made back than..Ran my old guilds on the veeshan server..Playing a cleric was a real challenge..So ya ive yet to find a mmorpg to fill this void..Though my friends and i are gearing up for star wars like many of yall on here..Hope i can get that old everquest feel to it..At least partially..Only time will tell with this new mmorpg..How ever if this fails i still have cornipricus im waiting for also ...

It's pointless OP. I know. I tried so many times, to stop Lineage 2. I just couldn't. L2 was the reason of my lack of social life. My best record was 6 months. Then I reinstalled and started again. They are like drugs I'm telling ya, you can't stop!

MMOs by nature are massive and feature interaction with a large world that has quite a few players. Guild Wars is almost completely instanced except for towns. The towns act as lobbies or chatrooms for Diablo. The instanced gameplay is a seperate world for each group which is like Neverwinter Nights or Diablo.

Also I wrote a blog post on the game if you want to get a general idea on it.

And GW doesnt require you to play with tons of people to do certain things and to have a healer, dps, and so on does it? its more like diablo in that sense, which I like. Me and my buddy JUST bought it. I am DLing it through steam as we speak, so I hope I have not wasted 30 bucks lol.

I have grown tired of MMO's as well, the primary goal of most of the everquest/asherons call clones like wow, war, lotr, is about pressing your buttons while drinking coffee - well thats okay for some, I prefer more gameplay however.

Darkfall online is also one of my favourite mmo's atm. - but there arent really enough players in the game to make it fun to me.

so atm. im not playing any MMO's I did not even try to play rift or aion, cuz they looked so generic, that I actually laughed when I wathched some vids' I mean wtf?

Bioware's starwars game however, the gameplay looks kinda like all the other theme park mmo's, BUT and its a pretty big BUT, the STORY of starwars old republic is probably why im going to enjoy that mmo - im hoping I will enjoy it :)

You'll be back. You may think that you are sick and tired of the same old gameplay mechanics but sooner or later you'll start missing playing on a server with a couple of hundred folks or a few thousand. Thats what always tempted me, the feeling of playing on a virtual world with the rest of the world at the same time, competing against or co-op with them.

Well I am done with WoW it's been 10 months now and am not interested at all in going back. BUT, Guildwars 2 has me salivating and I have my eye on TOR so to say goodbye to a genre just because you tired of them right now is just plain silly, you never know what these new games will bring.

I recognize the first three games ending with Planetside 2 but don't recognize the others. What are their names? They look great but I see the same problem with current MMOS. Outside of the FPS games which I would argue aren't even MMORPGs I see more ability based combat. Hit a button and watch combat happen. For as good as SW:TOR looks that's it core gameplay and they've hide that well for a while now. I do wonder how many people really know and understand it's the same as other games on the market, just in a better looking package.

The one right after Planetside 2 is Vindictous. The last one is Continent of the Ninth, which doesn't look like it has an english version.

Everyone probably, because they don't hide it at all, it's that "core gameplay" that might make it successful, it doesn't "look great" like all the others that are going to fail/currently failing.

It's vindictus, Continent of the ninth, Core Blaze, and Blade n Soul, these are all action MMOs. They all contain gameplay styles very similar to console games like Devil May Cry/Bayonetta, God of War, and Demon souls.

Well FireFall I see it as a MMOFPS/TPS/RPG FireFall does have a story/campaign for players to follow with their friends. It's pretty massive with dynamic events like giant monsters and AI Armies attacking and trying to take over NPC cities.

Running around with a million random ppl online (MMOS) never appealed to me. If i'm gonna play a rpg with others , i'd rather play a game like NWN, which is more similar to a p&p d&d style setup. A small party of friends going out adventuring.

I'm still waiting for some worthwhile MMO's. Good ones are hard to find. Great ones are even harder to come across.

Forged by Chaos looks interesting though, and it runs on the CryEngine:

Cool but that reminds me I haven't seen anything new about this game is it still being developed?

Those screens remind me of Warhammer...The environments even scream Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2..
