Agreed on FEAR and Condemned.. RE4 and Bioshock was for the most part not scary (though great games none the less)..
Also some scenes in Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines, were pretty scary like being in the haunted hotel.
Aliens VS Predator. Play as the marine, you might get freaked out.smokeydabear076
Hehe I remember that, both Avp 1 and 2 were great games, and scary as a marine.

Yeah I had some crazy good times with those games.Get penumbra: black plague then. it was on a different level of scariness than any of those other games. i felt panicky the whole time i played it, often descending into sheer terror. plus it's cheap. $20 dollars, if i recal. it's like a real world logic puzzle game plus a insane terror game. really fantastic. with_teeth26
He'll need to play Overture before Black Plague.
um are you guys forgetting DOOM 3 now that was a scary game play alone at night with some good heapdphones and you SH** your pants :P-Socrates-
he said he already played it.
oh my bad i didnt see that one
well theres this game caleld the clocktower or something like that it was pretty creepy and fun ;)
Stalker has some scary parts in it... Especially in the underground areas with mutated humans, the sound is perfect, you can hear metal doors creaking and debris falling around you, definitely play late at night with 5.1 speakers... guarantee to give you a few nightmares :)
I also have to recommend System Shock 2. I think it was some combination of how the shadows made the enemies look, and the sound. There is also the fact that stuff sneaks up on you on a regular basis.
Bioshock had very few scary parts. The splicers weren't that scary most of the time.
If you don't mind adventure games - then Scratches: Director's Cut is a must have.
From horror-survival genre I would recommend Call Of Cthulhu: The Dark Corners Of The Earth.

I was thinking of picking scratches up, but it got bad reviews. Please describe this game more, i am a fan of any type of scary game as long as it is not too slow and boring.
Call of Cthulu Dark Corners of the Earth - A very under-rated game imo...its a great audio/visual experience. A bit old but still amazing !
FEAR - The scariest game I have played yet...it made me scream a couple of times
Condemned Crininal Origins - From the creators of FEAR....nuff said.

argh, more games i need to get. there are just too many, at this point.
yeah, someone else was praising call of cthulu, but it didn't get a great review here at gamespot, so i was hesitant to pull the trigger on that one, but maybe i should...
and monolith is just awesome, imo, so i'm definitely going to have to put condemned on my wish list. i wonder when they'll release condemned 2 for the pc...
thanks for reminding me about these two games.

I'll throw you my opinions on these games for whatever they're worth. Call of Cthulhu captures the atmosphere of Lovecraft pretty damn well, and there's some magnificent ideas (the health system is smart, you can become distressed and go insane if you see discomforting imagery), but the game falls over its own feet.
The game is a stealth game, but it so often degenerates into tedious trial and error that makes the game completely unfun. I am a pretty good - and patient - gamer, but I gave up on it. I couldn't bring myself to sit through these tedious sequences that you have to get exactly right, and if you fail, you pretty much have to start over most of the time. It's cool when you get it right and your heart is pounding, but when you sat through eight attempts at the exact same bit to get there, it sort of undermines the most important thing the game has going for it - the atmosphere.

Condemned is the worst game Monolith has ever made. The combat is trivial and repetitive. It's not Monolith's fault, but there's just no AI that works well in a melee game - it always degenerates into learning the AI's tells and then exploiting them, making the combat repetitive and boring.
The environments are also tediously small. While this was probably meant for claustrophobia's sake, it doesn't work so well. There are also numerous stupid computer game contrivances, like you can only get through certain areas by using the right weapon on it. So, no, you can't get through that door with a sledgehammer. You gotta go find a fireaxe. Yeah. Also, your character (a trained FBI agent) throws his weapon away at the end of every level. I can appreciate that games need to sacrifice realism to be fun, but that was ridiculous. It's hard to believe that that game came from the same company that also made games like NOLF and FEAR.
I won't tell you not to buy them, just try not to put them on too high a pedestal before playing them. They're both pretty broken games.
ok, i'm using this as an excuse not to get them, cuz i don't have any freaking money anyhow and there are other games that are coming out soon that i MUST get...

there's one part i hated in nolf 2 (the rest of the game being fabulous), which is the part where you sneak into the office that's surrounded by guards - it was really frustrating, so anything that reminds me of that part of the game is a no no for me.

disappointing to hear, considering it's by monolith... i actually didn't even know about this game until condemned 2 buzz started appearing ever so quietly. maybe i'll wait till condemned 2 comes out on the pc and read the reviews.
thanks, man. appreciate the input.
"The Cradle" level from Theif deadly shadows is the scariest thing on the Pc.
Try completing that without a walkthrough.
Silent Hill 3 & 4 definetly.
Doom 3, FEAR, Bioshock or any other game i've played so far (newer or old) haven't even come close, although they were all great games.
from the old ones Alone In The Dark series and Realms Of The Haunting were my favourites. just not working these days anymore :P
edit: also would recommend Resident Evil 4, since it's also for PC. don't know about the gameplay without a gamepad, but i have a gamepad (X360 controller look-a-like) and it was just as good to play as is was on gamecube. quite scary on some parts too.
