ok, heres the deal.

I have an old server that i was going to use as a backup host for a website, although the onboard video sucks and i am stuck with a spare Pci-x and a Pci-e x4 (slot size, not just bus speed) anyways, i was looking for a decent video card under 150usd. the board is an old Tyan 604 I series (not sure on exact model) and a new mobo is not a option. i do have a lane converter for Pci-x to pci, although i would rather not use it... The power supply is a apevia 500 watt Eps12v. i currently have two Intel Xeon dual core 3.2 GHz procs, and the ff is ATX (12.0x12.5 in). I am not new to hardware, so any options are available...

Edit: The motherboard is a tiger i7322dp s5353.

woah wait a minute... what's wrong with the onboard on your server. You don't need a graphics card for servers, actually I'd highly not recommend it. You don't need anymore drivers running to reduce performance.

servers are not meant to game on or anything, its meant to run servers!

I agree with simardbrad. I would actually PREFER onboard over dedicated graphics for a server, due to the lower power consumption.

the problem i have with the onboard graphics is that i can not get them over 800x600 res. I should probably rephrase myself that what i mean my "server" in this case is basically a workstation in which i use as a backup server.... my main server has a Nvidia Quadro fx 2500...

Although I agree with the above, you can stick a PCIe 1x video card into that 4x slot. I have done the same before with a 1x PCIe RAID card in a 4x PCIe slot.

either way, my question is basically, given the sockets available, what would be the best grapics card i could use that would be under $150?

The only card i know of for that is a Matrox P690 though... i'm not really sure if that's that much better than onboard. What are you actually going to use this PC for, by workstation do you really mean a CGI workstation cause if so i think you're better off getting something new as i can't see you being able to get any good workstation cards for those slots. As your main server already has a quadro i think you'ld be better off making this old server you've found a pure server and your current one a pure workstation or possibly making a HTPC, either way i don't think you're gonna get a worthwhile workstation out of it. If you wish you could look for an external graphics card caddy (ASUS XG Station), i know they made them for laptops at one point and you should be able to get a PCI expresscard slot for your workstation. Though these are very expensive and very rare.

there are quite a few video cards out there at this point... Pci-x is simply a pci port running at 64 or 128 bits, whereas standard Pci runs only at 32 bits. by this, any Pci card will work in a Pci-x slot...

Desktop: 9400gt - $75 Radeon HD 2400 Pro - $145 Workstation: Matrox Epica TC2 - $120 ATI FireMV 2260 - $150 Quadro NVS 280 - $170 The firemv 2260 seems like the best option as it has 4x the VRAM of the other workstation cards...
