I hear that microsoft has leaked service package 2 for vista and I want to get my hands on it! any ideas?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
It was on MSDN a week ago, but only as a DVD iso for Vista/Server 2k8. That does mean there's no way for normal people to get it AFAIK, but it probably is floating around the internet by now, yeah.If you can find a link that would be great. I hear you can only get it on torrents and I am too lazy for that :P

Why would anyone want to get their hands on unreleased Windows code? I guess if you wanted to brick your OS or have to drudge through dozens of errors then it would be understandable, but if you want an improved experience then for godsake wait until MS actually releases it. Actually, you should probably wait until 1-2 weeks after MS releases it before installing because when it comes to MS:
Beta = Alpha
Early release = Beta
Months after release = Market-ready version

Uh... what? That is the full release of Vista SP2. Maybe you're not familiar with how Microsoft does things, but I'm talking about the final RTM SP2. They traditionally release it to MSDN/Technet subscribers before they do to 'normal' people, just as they have with things like the Windows 7 betas/RC's.
So yeah, as of right now it already HAS been '1-2 weeks after MS releases' Vista SP2. You just can't download it right now unless you're involved with them somehow, last I checked.

Thanks for the link! looks like sp2 is shaping up to be a great addition ++ for vista, I'm personally skipping Windows 7 as it feels like a refresh with added features which are useful just don't have the want factor that I did from XP to Vista, Vista is a solid OS, especially 64-bit it flies. All I can see that stands out for Windows 7 is it scales resources better between low-high end systems but its been released that the system requirements min. are 1ghz cpu, 1gb ram, 16gb for 32-bit, and 20gb 64-bit so even some people may still complain. As for my system I'm sticking with Vista 64-bit and can't wait for SP2 and in few years Windows 8 as it won't be a refresh like Windows 7 is.
you should try 7.its far faster, and uses less resources than vista. anyone insisting on staying with vista after 7, is quite silly. you would be hurting your own PCs performance. here is just 1 comparison showing 7 beating vista in a few categories an OS can be tested in.Thanks for the link! looks like sp2 is shaping up to be a great addition ++ for vista, I'm personally skipping Windows 7 as it feels like a refresh with added features which are useful just don't have the want factor that I did from XP to Vista, Vista is a solid OS, especially 64-bit it flies. been beta testing it since it became available to the public mate build 7000, and running windows 7 RC 7100 as we speak.
Yeah I've seen the charts seems pretty good, just feel that its not a huge step from vista, just a well done improvement, which isnt that different, thats just me tho.
So knowing by your own judgment that it is in fact an improvement over vista, you are still going to stick to an inferior OS? That makes no sense at all. Regardless of how much better it is, it is still better. To each his own i guess. For me, I will take the better efficiency and higher frame rates of 7. However minor, they are still better than what vista offers.been beta testing it since it became available to the public mate build 7000, and running windows 7 RC 7100 as we speak.

Those charts don't show much really few numbers without real charts from apps or games, yes i do like win 7 just saying it doesnt feel all that better i mean it doesnt seem 10x better. I have a short review of my thoughts on 7 here:
Reasons why vista and 7 are great OS's and why Vista is still a good OS and windows 7 feels like a refresh but a good one at that:
I was thinking without Vista where would windows 7's foundation have originated from, vista was built from the ground up, windows 7 is indeed an evolution of vista is it not? where would its 3 years of driver development have come from prior to the public beta 1/RC was it not said vista drivers/software will work on 7? What of all vista's features which still remain in 7? And more to the point Yes windows 7 is proving vista type interfaces/features/functionality is possible on less powerful hardware, but that took them an extra year or more to work on, furthermore with high end hardware windows 7 performs even better in resource intensive applications compared to vista as it's said to be smarter, alot of work has been put in, or that is my impression, proof is in the pudding.
So indeed vista is advancement, and an evolution of operating systems as it was different to how xp operated, and windows 7 is proving it was a "step" in the right direction, 7 refines what it is to use a PC. Imo. But vista under the right circumstances hardware wise is fantastic, well for me and others might agree. Driver wise as of right now sp1 onwards its been working like a charm, there are minor cases ive read about though but generally on older hardware, just think XP had its problems upon release as i remember.
If operating systems such as xp,vista,7 didnt push for more powerful hardware to run efficiently and/or more so how would that effect hardware companies? Should M$ stop adding new useful apps/features/UI changes and additions which may up the minimum specifications required, but overall benefit the users experience and functions of the OS? However you may think well they should carry on adding/changing/evolving the platform but optimize it more thoroughly before its release, and I would agree, and its what 7 is! but without vista where would we have been?
What of technology advancement also, should cpu/ram/gpu/mobo/ every pc company stop research and development, and have done with it? just because that hardware worked well on a "yester-year" OS, doesn't mean it will work on this new one, so here hardware companies benefit from OS evolution.
So in all honesty Windows 7 owes Vista a Big Thank You. Vista is a great OS which seem's to have gone unappreciated and kicked in the head because of some people who tried it at first didnt like the change and went back to an older OS like XP, I think those people should have given vista 64 sp1 a try sp1 onwards , and just get that 3-4gb ram upgrade that costs nothing really to do, just think vista is only £90 now full retail HP.
Windows 7
Likes:
Faster boot times
Super bar task bar is fun to use and productive
Few new features they've added I like using like the wallpaper changer, and customizable themes.
Feels lighter on hardware, but my vista @ idle only uses 980mb-1gb, win 7 RC uses similar sometimes less 880mb. Memory management looks tweaked enough to be an improvement I guess.
Aero peek is nice
New glass effects (although vista with maxclear theme looks similar).
Handy Troubleshooting features
Dislikes:
hmm...odd graphical problems when i maximize some windows, Stardock's desk scapes doesn't work paid £15 for it, works fine in vista 64, because I've been a user of vista for 2 years and recently moved to 64-bit I dont feel the "want" when I moved from XP to Vista, Feels like a refresh, but im sure theyre worked so damn hard on making win 7 great.
Compatibility so far is fine, if it works on my vista 64 install it seems to work on 7, thanks vista again.
Note I didn't mention it being nippier, doesn't seem nippier to me compared to my vista 64.
off topic: end of 2010 I'm building new pc with win 7 64-bit as main OS, as it'll be mainstream by then.
I used this guide
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetContro lSession ManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParameters]
"EnableSuperfetch"=dword:00000002
"EnablePrefetcher"=dword:00000001
0=Off
1=Prefetch boot process
2=Application Prefetch
3=Prefetch both
to alter memory management and it might be a small reason why I got vista to manage my ram better
you might also notice in 7 that it shows : Total,Cached, Available, Free. Yet Vista shows them all except available, but as soon as you go to the resource monitor within the taskmanager on vista you'll see the "available" amount, which makes me wonder why they did that in 7, to make people think theres more available, when its the same?
i'm a gamer and thesehttp://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=3557&p=17results show win 7 wins by 1-4 fps, big whup lol

There's more indepth benchmarks there by Anandtech - for the most part it benchmarks exactly the same as Vista (both of which are below XP). There are a couple of situations where it benchmarks behind Vista and XP, often high resolutions.
edit: although i'd still recommend win7 over vista in the long run - i do like a lot of the small evolutionary changes. just that outright speed isn't really one of them, especially as i was running vista64 sp2 for a little while before switching off to win7 RC1.
i'm not against 7 in fact my next build in next 1.5 years will have me installing win 7 64-bit on it, just i bought vista for £220 on release and i wish to use it for a while longer, i dont see the hubub about 7 yet as its still RC and M$ might change things in RTM, makes me think its what XP users wanted as their replacement for XP and now its said to be the 8th wonder of thw world.
We are still far from win7 final. Just remember that.
@ The benchmarks. I am seeing far better increases over vista in games in comparison to those benches. That's 1 set of tests, on 1 system hardly a sample size big enough to prove anything other a simple point of reference. Given as a RC win7 is already beating vista and XP its not hard to foresee the final getting better and better. Not to mention newer drivers.

1.5 years? So 6 moths after Final Release ;)
I do see your point mate, I was wowed by 7 totally for a while, it is improvement, never said it wasn't, but because its built off of vista and feels similar to me on my pc im slightly hesitant to spend another £200 on 7. Yeah I admit its good but vista 64-bit sp1 is a solid OS and now sp2 is coming thats good too, I mean I upgraded to vista because it was an improvement in my eyes over XP, but if i said well XP is better than vista then wouldnt that mean by staying with XP I'd be staying with an inferior OS as you put it? and XP users still praise XP, as i praise Vista for what it helped achieve in 7.
and yeah like 6 months after release so I think thats smart coz of what bugs there may be, they'll mostly get worked out by the time i buy.

That's the time frame I would expect most to start moving to it. I'm in no way saying use the RC as a primary OS.
Yeah me either, I've been seeing alot of people over at OCN moving to it already as main OS. Also from what I've experienced win 7 will be a better received OS than vista by the public.
But again it seems this thread like another about vista sp2 has strayed onto the win 7 topic, just shows how much people are looking forward to it, yet sp2 should improve the vista OS until people decide to upgrade to 7.
Very true. Just because win7 is coming so soon, doesn't mean we shouldn't maintain Vista/XP.But again it seems this thread like another about vista sp2 has strayed onto the win 7 topic, just shows how much people are looking forward to it, yet sp2 should improve the vista OS until people decide to upgrade to 7.

It's also been said M$ are going back to the OS every 3 years cycle so expect windows 8 3 years after 7's release, we'll have the same discussion similar to this one except its been rumoured windows 8 will be a new OS built from the ground up again, or a very different OS although it will need to be, to avoid win 7 being its main competitor, like we saw with XP and vista, instead it should be win 8 vs linux vs mac OS .
Can you list what you've noticed about Sp2, hows its improved things on your system, i'm assuming your running it? Curious as to how it is.
Uhh no lol :) Technet, is part of Microsoft's "IT special thing" or basically you pay 350 dollars a year and you get access to every M$ OS, software for free. Anyway, I can't post a link cause dat est illegal.tell me how it goes, and please give a link if it works

Seriously? That would be an absolute steal for someone like me who still needs to buy office and needs to get a few new MS OS's (long story). I'd save hundreds of dollars doing that, there has to be a catch like it's only available to IT departments or all the software you get using tehcnet only works for as long as you subscribe to technet.

There is no catch, I've been in MSDN but it doesn't matter. Technet you have unlimited copies of every MS OS, you cannot give these to anybody, but it's really a steal for me because I need to use Server 2k3(2000 dollars) + 2k8/r2 (2000 dollars) and ofcourse I get vista ultimate, office 2007, Windows 7 when it comes out. The software lasts forever, but the subscription to get new software is a year. It is a steal, I reccommend everyone to do it, you even get magazines which have the scripting guy in it(google him if you do not know who he is :D) and yeah, you get a card (credit card sorta thing) With your technet stuff on it, it's a steal join it. 350 dollars a year, and the software lasts forever = sexy time.Also on a side note they do check technet/msdn subscriptions a lot, that means don't go giving it off to a friend, they look at your IP, and if they see it's coming from multiple locations they will probably give you a call.
I also recommend Microsoft Dreamscene or w/e it's called for students. You can a full fledged Server 2k3 Standard edition for FREE. Yeah free. You could just use it at as a normal desktop environment if you're cheap, but really take advantage of what Microsoft throws out.
(I don't work for Microsoft lol, I'm just saying they have some neat deals that nobody knows about, unless you are awesome(me))

All I'm seeing when I search for Dreamscene is Windows Dreamscene which is apparently a desktop animator. Is that what you were talking about, or is it something similar to technet/MSDN?
Anyway, I'm seriously tempted to pick up a technet subscription. I need to get my hands on office, XP64, XP home, and Windows 7 (when it comes out). May as well upgrade my current Vista Premium installation to Vista Ultimate while I'm at it.
edit: BTW, I just realized that our conversation in this thread reads like an infomercial lol.

Do some benchmarks yourself - you're pointing at the one site that actually DID, then saying "I don't believe them" and turning around and saying it's faster despite that. While I like and recommend Win7, I too lost a few FPS going from Vista x64 to Win7 RC1 x64 in Source engined games for sure, though most other games are about the same. Besides that RE: drivers and such, it's using the exact same driver model as Vista SP2. If you see improvements in one, they'll likely be there in the other. When it comes to raw performance in single apps like games or transfer speed, we're not going to be seeing much in the way of performance increases, and we haven't really seen anything to indicate that it's going to happen so far. Given how heavily Win7 is based on Vista, it's not going to be a miracle OS that defies reality, just as DX10 wasn't able to do it to DX9.
I think its stupid ms hasnt released it to the public. Its an already finished service package. I paid for vista and I should get the updates as soon as they are available. I guess they are as usual FORCING me to use bit torrents and they wonder why they have so much pirating going on of their software.
