pcs are more powerful than macs.period. shakmaster13

That's an odd statement to make. The vast majority of PC's are cheap, under-powered machines running celerons and integrated graphics.

You could try to argue that you'll get more performance per dollar by buying a PC and you'll probably be right in most cases, but it doesn't really factor in the software aspect of it. It also doesn't factor in any value that might come from having Mac OS, or running on a restricted set of hardware.

Nice iMac. Lets not make this a mac vs pc thread he asked about games.

I would suggest that you drop whatever you are doing right now, go to your nearest retail store, and get THE ORANGE BOX! You will not be disappointed, both in the quality and quantity of games. Seriously, right NOW.

I didn't mean to start a flame war with my post. Getting back to my original question - so is Half Life 2 pretty much what I'm looking for as far as depth of the modding community?

Fraustbite_0

It's not your fault. Flame wars are inevitable here

I would definatly get the orange box. All of those games have a dedicated community.

I would also get the original half life. (not halflife source) It has one of the most extensive mod community i have seen. Great mods for half life include Sven Co op and Natural Selection.

You may have talked me into re-installing the orginal Halflife... assuming it will run on Vista... That will be an interesting experiment....

Good point, TC if you have not played the original Halflife get that also, its $10. It's a little old now but still amazing. After you finish that go on to Halflife 2 and its episodes(included in the orange box). And when you want a break from HL play Portal and Team Fortess 2.

Shows what you know Lepper. Actually, Macs are the most powerful computers. They have much more power then Windows based PC's and that is why they are used in the graphics industry. They are also used in marketing departments that create circulars and other graphical media. And before you bash me I am a PC user not a Mac user and have been in the computer industry for over 25 years. It is known through out the computer field that macs are more powerful then PC's and always have been. The only reason PC's ever even survived is because Bill Gates ripped off the Mac operating system and there has always been more software support for PC's then Mac's. When you think about it as gamers it is sad we are not all on Mac's as our games would probably be much more advanced then they are now.MrUnSavory1

all this is soo true and yet i have no understanding of why they made all the games for pc im a pc user in the process of switching to a nice new shiny macbook pro but it doesnt make sense but i guess thats why apple made boot camp for leopard so that ya can run the other stuff on it

Thanks for the advice everyone. Now I have a few great games in mind when I go shopping this weekend. In response to some of you who think the Mac is overpriced, it's not. I really, really, really wanted the iMac because it doesn't have a tower AND a monitor to deal with, it's an ALL in one machine. For a young married guy without a ton of space in his condo for his work and his wife's clothes, it really helps a guy out. Spending almost $3k on a computer seems like a lot but really it's not. I love my new iMac and I can't wait to see some new games on my beautiful new screen!

Macs are not more powerful, they have the same hardware, shows what you know, and the kicker is you can get a PC as powerful for less. Macs are proprietary, and MAC os stoles from OS's before it, that is the OS industry and irrelevant. Saying macs are more powerful is the rambling of a mac fanatic. How are they? They sue the same GPU's and CPU's? If Mleper-messiahs

I don't own a MAC but when people ask me what kind of computer they should get I tell them if ur not going to do any programming, and gaming get a MAC. Then they look at me thinking i should hate MACs because i own a pc. I actually want a MAC because it is nicer than Windows, and just seems more fun, but im not getting one cause i need my PC softwares and games, and i've always seen PC hardware superior to MACs. Just me though.

Why are people so fixated on the price? It's not as overpriced as you may think, anyways. Don't forget it comes with a drool-worthy 24" uber-flatscreen monitor with a built in webcam, and a huge software suite. musicalmac

how can you not see that that is expensive?

And really why would I need a monitor that big? unless im playing video games (which I can't do much on Mac with video games unless I use bootcamp).

Also you can't upgrade it:/

I don't even know what the "GS" in nVidia 8800 GS means so yes, I'll have fun gaming. I'll probably buy about 3 games tops, I'm not really much of a gamer and that's not really what I got the Mac for at all.

Oh and the Orange Box is a no brainer.

[QUOTE="leper-messiahs"]

The amount of software that works and comes with MAC still pales in comparison to Windows, and even with those features that price is assinine, that is one of the reasons macs are a niche, very small market.

musicalmac

Incorrect. Mac users now have access to MORE software than Windows users, because Mac users can double dip Mac-Specific and Windows-Specific software. Saying macs are only for a niche market is also off base, because Mac sales are growing faster than PC sales in the consumer market. Those are old arguments.

WOW, what bull. Macs make up less then 5% of the market, Windows PC DOMINATE, post proof with links or don't bother posting. That is surely a NICHE market, and PC sales still Dwarf Macs my a huge margin. No, Mac DOES NOT work with NEAR the software that runs on windows, anyone who knows squat about PC's knows this, Windows runs virtually anything, there is a lot of siftware that simply won't run on macs at all, games being just one example. Please.

http://www.systemshootouts.org/mac_sales.html

Don't let facts get in the way, MACS are a very small niche market that is DWARFED by Windows PC's, and they should be with retarded costs, and dumb proprietary hardware that restricts upgrades and uses choice. Apple has LESS market share now then it did around 1999-2000.

I actually would love to build a computer if I had the time or the know how. I'm just too afraid that I would put the whole thing together and then install windows and have to spend hours trying to figure out why I keep getting all these error messages - which was my first experience with trying to install Windows Vista 64 on my iMac. I just gave up and bought Windows XP.

I cant really tell from the posts but I think the 2 guys backing the Macs as being faster and more software compliant are just messing around fellas. They were just trying to start a flame war and you guys fell into it... then again... from their posts I cant really tell. They may very well be minimally exceptional if you know what i mean.

Sorry, but this thread has turned into Mac vs PC, which does not belong at all in PC Games.
