It wouldn't be smart to buy a new PC now and request the old OS that will be soon obsolete. Everyone has a copy of XP laying around if they really wanted to use it. XP is dead to me and I wouldn't want to install it.

That's not really true. Vista is fine, it just doesn't offer any advantage over XP except for DX10 support, and has some problems running older games. The only people who shouldn't bother with Vista are people who have their own personal copy of XP, and would have to spend +$100 upgrading to Vista. It just isn't worth the money.

But in limonadi's case, I'd say go ahead and get Vista if it doesn't cost him any extra money, just so he has the DX10 support. Which he'll want within the next few years.

Vista will not let U play a lot of games, including World of warcraft, etc.

I definitely recommend Windows XP prof. or home for gaming and all else.

I can play all my games on Vista Including WoW. I've had no problem with it. If you want to prepare for the future get vista.

To future proof your system for the next couple of years it wold be best to get Vista(nothing less than Home Premuim) and a DirectX capable Graphics card such as one of the GeForce 8xxx-series.

As for people claiming Vista is buggy, this is true; but, do you know any version of Windows that is not buggy. LOL.

Even XP has its own issues. I run a System with XP Pro, Vista Ultimate and PCLinuxOS 2007. All of the Operating Systems have bugs, they are too complicated these days to not have bugs. The OS in my current set-up with teh least bugs is PCLinuxOS2007. The one witht eh most is Vista Ultimate. For some reason Microsoft's Certified driver(from WIndows Update) for my GeForce 7600 GS cause the Video driver to crash and reset at least once every hour once the Dream Scene Ultimate extra from Windows Update is enabled. Once Dream Scene is disabled it is more stable.

I would recommend XP. Most software is optimized to run with XP, I have 2 PC's, one with XP (AMD4400 , 2 gig ram, Nvidia 7950)and the other with Vista (AMD6000+, 2 gig ram, Nvidia 8500GT) and have noticed noticable slowdowns and performance hits on the vista machine.

The game I am using them on is Everquest 1, and we all know how old that game is, even with the graphical updates it's still old and both my rigs should run it with ease.

Once I noticed the performance hit, I re-formatted my Vista machine and installed XP, since then I have noticed performance improvements.

I am not saying Vista is a bad OS, because it is not. In fact it is an excellent OS. It just needs a few more updates, and once the next major service pack for Vista is released, it should correct many issues that it currently has.

My 2 cents

Bad price for good computer. I spend hours every day now looking for a PC I want to invest around $1000 CAD (almost = to USD atm) And found an AMD 5000+ x2 with 3 gig RAM for $750 CAD.

And that's a lot fewer Euros. Which means I can get a $250 Nvidia 8600GTS and make it exactly $1000 CAD

Do the math and it's the same price as 750 Euros for almost as much of a computer plus a just sub-top-of-the-line card which is dx10 compatible and is like twice the Radeon x1600 for the same price.

My input: do a lot more research.

If you are buying a new PC you are an idiot to not take Vista with it if included in the price. Vista has one thing over XP, DX10. It's not worth spending the $100 for right now, but included in a PC? Take it! As long as you have 2gigs of RAM (which any new PC buy should) then you have no worries. Seriously I have Vista on my laptop, XP still in my desktop, no problems with Vista but nothing I have seen to make me want to upgrade my desktop either.

jesus christ, alot of people hating on vista...? why??

Im not a microsoft fanboy, but then again I don't understand the mindless hate towards Vista, just because a few mindless reviewers online, or your less-than-smart friends say Vista is bad, doesnt mean it's true.

I've been running vista for a while now and I have -no- bugs, and I run memory and resource intensive programs such as 3dsmax and zbrush 3.

I can also play all my games, I even installed the fallout series and the game explorer recognized those games with no problems.

You just have to know how to set it up and do a few steps after installing to get it right.

If anyone has dx10 hardware and is screwing themselves over because they hear mindless sheep on forums telling them vista sucks, for the love of god, use the hardware you paid so much for and install vista...

You just need to disable DEP, AEC, get the performance and reliability updates, and run some stubbord programs as admin (run as administrator)...and you are set.

N.B: If you have more than 2GB of RAM like me, you have to do the same thing you did in xp, but xp has a boot.ini you have to modify, vista doesn't, what you modify in vista is the BCDedit and tell it you have 3 or 4gb of ram. It is very important you do if you are a 3d modeler or video composer, since those programs can use all the RAM they need, games on the other hand, are pretty much capped at 2GB.

No actually all i was saying is Vista needs some more patching before I would fully depend on it for all my gaming needs and that the "old" engine XP is more dependable and widely supported by most software on the market new and old.

If the fear of a game or some application not working takes you away from all the advantages that vista has, you missed the train. I tested TONS of games & apps and ALL worled fine. (I'm a software dev btw)

I am sure many apps and games run fine with Vista, but heck even check here on Gamespots own site on compatibility.....

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6154735/index.html

Seems alot is still not working properly.....

I am sure SOME people will have sucess with Vista and for those I say WTG!

I would wait for the next major service patch before switching entirely over to Vista..just my opinion tho

I heard vista doesn't let you run certain games because of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protected_Media_Path Has anyone had/expierenced any trouble with this Drm program that care to share? If so I might stray from getting Vista all together though I hear it has some nice features..

There is no such thing as future proof. It is more like future delay. Buying better hardware now, larger hard drive and more memory now will delay the time you would need to upgrade or get another computer.

It seems like a decent pc, regarding the price, I think it is the taxes of the North that plays in, here in denmark PC's cost more aswell... I would consider a 8800gt tho, and ofcourse Vista...

Do not be afraid of Vista, I had it for a bit over 7 months, only crashed once (and that was a nvidia driver for crysis, not vista)
