That depends. If you ply racing games, yes, I would definitely recommend having one. Also if you play games like Street Fighter 4 and so on, it would make sense to have one.
If you only play FPS, then there is no point. Might as well save your money.

The only time I used a controller was for resident evil 4, impossible to play with mouse and keyboard, but this because a terrible console conversion. Otherwise I will never change my configuration even for the best controller in the world.

Of course for flight simulator games it is another history.

This is my opinion but, mouse and keyboard are just perfect!

Controller is not going to do that. Unless you play some fighting or racing games, you don't need a controller.

Depends on the game. I have a flight stick for games like BF1942 and the like. I have a game pad for my emulators and fighting games. Other than that, nope.

Instead of actually buying a PC gaming controller just use a PS3 or 360 controller and modify the buttons to your liking. If you don't have one lying around PM me, I can help you out :D

it depends, do you like playing with a mouse? if so then don't get it. the mouse affords the player with more control as opposed to the gamepad

it couldn potentially help for certain PC games. one example is the newer Prince of Persia (non-sands of time). game works great with an xbox 360 controller for pc. it's a bit pricey, but can give you a more fun experience. i've even recently purchased Trine over steam and a controller works great for it. as i said, i highly recommend the 360 controller for pc if you can bite the bullet.

Fighters, certain platformers, anything resembling the recent Ninja Gaiden games, and the PC version of Resident Evil 4 all need a controller to maximize their fun (RE4 on PC is practically broken without one). a wired 360 controller is one of the best ways to go. it's officially supported by MS, but it's $30 off Amazon.

Buy a 360 controller online. You can find one new for about 30$.

360 gamepad is compatible with the majority of games on PC. And its not like 30$ is a lot. That's less then buying a game.

Tip for PC controller users:

There is a freeware program called X-Padder(only about 1Mb in size) that allows you to assign keyboard buttons and mouse movements to gamepad buttons.

I initially bought a controller to play stuff like Resident Evil 4, but this program gives you greater control over the gamepad layout in games with more restrictive configuration options and it can also be used outside of the gamingenvironment.

Get an Xbox 360 gamepad for the XInput-based games. (You'll know if a game supports XInput based on whether or not it supports the X360 gamepad explicitly.) Then, pick up an Xbox Controller S and use the XBCD drivers for DirectInput games. (I don't recommend the X360 gamepad with the default drivers for DirectInput because the triggers are a combined axis with no option to set them as split axes or buttons, and the right analog stick isn't bound to the throttle and rudder axes, which some games are hard-coded to use. X360 gamepads can use XBCD too, but then you lose XInput and need an emulator utility to get it back-sort of.) Of course, for racing or flight simulations, you use a wheel or stick+throttle+pedals, no questions asked. Not KB+M (at least not as the primary controls), not a twiddlystick gamepad (unless you have nothing else)-proper controls are the only way to go.
