Seeing how I plan to build a gaming rig soon, I was also hoping to get one RTS game, but I feel kind of conflicted. First of all, I was searching for the cheapest copy of SCII on the web, and I came across Amazon.com's review of the game, where many players were complaining about the DRM and how poorly implemented BattleNet 2.0 is, along with the fact that single-player can only be played when signed in to your account. Then, I heard people complaining about having problems downloading DOWII.

So, which title is worth playing more? (And, yes, I do realize that DOWII is more of a real-time tactics game than a true RTS, due to it being very tactical and not having any basebuilding feature.)

Don't read Amazon reviews, frustrated kids write them, you can play the campaign offline, B.net 2 is great, that's just the wave of uneducated swine because that's what that type of whiners are that went "OMG it haz internet as requirments" and DoW 2 downloads just fine, why would anyone have problems downloading from Steam...if it's still from Amazon might be yet another wave of uneducated etc. SC 2 is the best RTS released yet, DoW 2 is great too, lots of fun, but it gets repetitive fast, if you like the gameplay then that won't be a problem.

Starcraft 2's campaign is EFFIN' AMAZING. It's the best in the genre. I love DoW2, but it's nowhere close to SC2's awesomeness.

kind of hard to say, they are really not very similar.

in SP I generally preferred DoW2 (and its expansions) but despite me usually love Relic RTS games MP, I just cant stomache it, I think its the lack of size.

In SC2 there is some good SP, the mp is quite good and fluent (altho I agree that Bnet 2.0 is a mess sometimes).

In my eyes the choice to make would be "what kind of game do you prefer" SC is alot about buildorders, and quick builds, DoW2 is far more about utilizing the units you have, not how fast you build them (as in even the earliest units never gets useless, and you can not count on unit spamming).

Not saying that any of them is the "right" choice, simply that people does not prefer the same things in RTS games.

I really do enjoy the fast building in SC2, and the way the gameplay flows, quick and focused, just as much as I enjoy the slower more methodical setting of ambushes, and observe my opponant before striking.

I suppose you should try the beta of SC2 (there is one if I remember correctly), DoW2 is on sale tho, my advice is ironically to bu both, since they are so different, if you can get only 1, SC2 is the most classical in terms of RTS games, and DoW2 is sort of a tactical evolution of the genre.

It depends on what you want more. If you have played Company of Heroes, DoWII is like that with no base building at all(CoH didn't have a lot either). SC2 has a lot of emphasis on building the right structures and resource management.

DoW2 actually plays more like an Action RPG, leveling up commanders/ squad leaders, clearing mapa and facing off with bosses. Campaign missions are more or less the same, with few interesting ones in between. Chaos Rising, the expansion, has done a better job in mission variety, though the ARPG format is intact.

SC2 is traditional RTS, with some of the best campaign missions in the genre.

In that case, I suppose that I will likely end up picking up both titles eventually. And yes, I probably should try SC2 for free before making a decision on whether or not BNet 2.0 is bearable.

You can't really go wrong with either game. I would recommend SC2 just because I like a lot more than DOWII but both are very good RTS's

Pay attention to the dates on the reviews, as I imagine both games will probably have most of the issues patched out.

Battlenet "2.0" didn't even have chat rooms for a while (lol).

I'd say that SC 2 has a better campaign than DoW 2.

DoW 2 has much better multiplayer (imo) but the vanilla game has no community since it migrated over to Retribution.

Well, if you like MP nothing really beats SC2's. If you like better stories, DOW2 is up your alley.

I would always choose DOW2 over StarCraft, though. And because StarCraft stole from Warhammer 40k.

And Picasso stole humans from Michelangelo, who cares where they got the ideas from, they're not even vaguely similar games, I can't watch DoW, but I love watching SC2(and playing) {I mean, I'm obviously not biased or anything...}

The human form isn't copyrighted. Space Marines, Tyranids and Eldar certainly are and StarCraft took them all(Terrans, Zerg and Protoss respectively). The games don't have to be similar for the ideas to have been taken in the first place. I don't really see what there is to argue about.

I like Dawn of War 2 better. I don't have much fun with starcraft 2, but if you want to play professionally or something then get starcraft.

Imo ultimately Sc2 is the better game. Don't worry there are no frustrating issues with Battlenet right now, the ones spoken about are either fixed now or largely exaggerated. I have played and finished both games single player campaigns so here is my 2 cents:

Sc2's campaign is incredible, especially if you played the original Sc and aware of what is going on in the universe. The story is amazing. The missions are never boring and repetitive, every mission throws some original twist at you to keep you entertained. Story progression hooks you up and the cinematics and dialogs are brimming with quality. Also campaign lets you choose permanent upgrades and additions to your army along the way which is a nice addition. Sc2's campaign won't dissapoint you.

Dow2 on the other hand has a weaker story. If you played other Dow games or get involved with warhammer 40k universe in anyway, you'll know what will happen from the start. Also characters are not memorable at all. In short if you are looking for a good story, this is not your game. However the mechanics of Dow2 single player campaign is unique. You have to choose 4 squads to lead in to battle out of eventual 6, you yourself level and gear up those squads with the equipments you find in the missions. You have a lot of control how your squads will be played like. Missions are far from standard RTS fare, more like in lines of tactical squad rpgs. There are optional missions for extra gear and xp but most of the missions' objectives can't go beyond generic rts mission objectives.

One last thing, if you have a friend, Dow2's missions are a blast to play co-op (2 squad each).

If you are alone and care for the story, go with Sc2, it won't fail to entertain. If you can play co-op and don't care about the story, get Dow2 because it's a blast when played co-op.

They both have boring stories, but Starcraft 2's is less so, better told and better presented. I don't care very much for multiplayer so I can't assess that. Gameplay wise, I don't find the Blizzard model very interesting but it was polished and used most of its potential. Relic's system is far more creative and fresh, but for some reason they failed to utilize it to deliver a complete experience. Which was a pity, as the game could have been so much more.

I liked DOW2 more, but I'm a huge fan of RPG's and that part of DOW2 appealed to me. SC2 SP was fantastic, but the MP can get pretty intense although I understand why some people really like it. If your looking for a game to spend lots of time getting good at, then go with SC. Otherwise my money is on DOW2.

I own both. The multiplayer is DoW2 is broken to be honest. Doesnt really give you much. Also when you compare the SP for SC2 and DoW2 - SC2 is much better. DoW2 doesnt totally cut it for me. I still have to play the Retribution campaign and will soon but the past two werent as good as SC2. Just how it is. If you get DoW2 games for cheap - then its worth it. Otherwise - you wont get much mileage out of them.

Well story wise SC2 campaing is great but gameplay wise it is very scripted which I dont like, now the real fun is the online multiplayer thats where you need some skills, I find it that the matchmaking is pretty good. Now as for DoWII I tried it but its not my kind of game I think it may have a great story and campaign but the gameplay and mechanics are not my thing. I prefer games like SC2, WiC or CoH. If you like the DoW genre then go for it I'm not sure about how competitive the multi is but I know it has co-op wich must be fun, but dont buy SC2 only for the campaign its only worth it if you buy it for the multi.
